Error 0x0092664C is not identified in Microsoft’s current Windows 11 or Windows 10 support material, and an exact-match search does not return a recognized Microsoft error description. Treat it as an unverified code rather than assuming a particular cause. First check that every character was copied correctly, record the complete message and the program that displayed it, then choose troubleshooting steps based on whether it appeared during Windows Update, a crash, startup, installation or activation.
What error 0x0092664C means
Windows error codes normally map to a message that explains a failure. In this case, Microsoft’s current Windows 11 and Windows 10 support pages do not document 0x0092664C, and an exact search for that string produces no recognized result. That leaves several possibilities: a mistyped character, an application-specific status value, a message copied from a log incorrectly, or a code generated by software that is not part of Windows itself.

Microsoft’s System Error Code Lookup Tool is designed to display “the message text that is associated with a hexadecimal status code.” Looking up a value there can help determine whether a hexadecimal code is a standard Windows status, but the tool does not establish that this particular code is valid, current or associated with a known Windows component.

Capture the exact context before changing anything
Diagnostic changes are easier to undo when you know what happened first. Write down the following while the message is visible:
- The code exactly as shown, including the
0xprefix, zeroes, letters and capitalization. - The complete wording around the code. A line such as “installation failed” or “application error” is more useful than the number alone.
- The application, installer or Windows component that displayed it.
- Whether it appeared during startup, sign-in, Windows Update, activation, software installation, shutdown, a restart or a crash.
- The time it occurred and whether the same action reproduces it.
- A screenshot, if possible. Keep the window title and any buttons visible.
To record the Windows release and build, press Windows key + R, enter winver, and press Enter. For a system event, open Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, select System or Application, and save the relevant event details. If the computer created a crash dump, preserve the dump rather than deleting it; support staff may need it to identify the failing component.
Recheck the characters against the screenshot. Confusing 0 with O, 1 with I, or dropping a digit changes the lookup result completely.

Choose the troubleshooting path that matches the trigger
| Where the message appeared | Start with | Access needed | Relative risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Windows Update troubleshooter, then update-component reset | Standard account for the troubleshooter; administrator for service and command-line repairs | Automated checks are low risk; renaming update caches changes local update state but can be reversed by restoring the names |
| Crash, freeze or unexpected restart | Remove recent hardware, try Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager and system events | Standard account for diagnostics; administrator may be required to change drivers or run repairs | Diagnostics are reversible; driver removal and System Restore require more care |
| Software installation or activation | Identify the installer or product, then use its repair, reinstall or support process | Often administrator permission for installation | Repair is usually reversible; uninstalling can remove the application’s local settings |
| Startup or sign-in | Safe Mode, recent-change review and System Restore if available | Administrator access may be required for recovery options | Recovery changes can affect recently installed drivers and programs |

When it finishes, restart the computer, return to Windows Update and select Check for updates. If the code returns, note whether the failure occurs while checking, downloading or installing; that distinction is useful when you escalate the issue.
2. Reset the Windows Update cache and services
If the troubleshooter does not resolve the update failure, Microsoft documents resetting the update components. This requires an elevated Command Prompt and changes the names of two cache folders so Windows can create fresh copies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Stop the services that may be holding update files by entering these commands one at a time:
net stop bits net stop wuauserv net stop cryptsvcIf a service is already stopped, the message can be noted and you can continue.
- Rename the update caches:
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.oldThe
rencommand does not erase the folders. It gives Windows a clean name under which to build new update data. - Start the services again:
net start cryptsvc net start wuauserv net start bits - Close Command Prompt, restart Windows and run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Do not delete other folders in %systemroot%. If a rename reports that a file is in use, restart Windows and repeat the procedure before attempting more invasive changes.
3. Repair the Windows component store and protected files
Corrupted Windows components can prevent updates from completing, although there is no evidence that corruption is the specific cause of 0x0092664C. In the same elevated Command Prompt, run the servicing and file-check commands in this order:
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. The process can pause at a percentage for some time. - After DISM completes, enter
sfc /scannowand allow the verification to reach 100 percent. - Restart the computer and try Windows Update again.
Both commands require administrator permission. DISM repairs the Windows component image that system-file checking relies on; running sfc /scannow first can leave it without a usable source. If either command reports an error, preserve the exact text rather than repeatedly running it.

If the message accompanies a crash, freeze or restart
A crash-related appearance does not make 0x0092664C a hardware or driver code. Use the surrounding symptoms to isolate the failing component.
Remove recent changes
Disconnect a recently added USB device, expansion card, dock or other hardware and test again. If the crash stops, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the trigger. Do not open a powered desktop or remove internal components unless you are qualified to do so and have followed the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and select Restart now under Advanced startup. After the restart, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select a Safe Mode option.
If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, review software, services and drivers that load during a normal boot. If it remains, the cause may be outside the startup items that Safe Mode omits, and the event log or a dump becomes more important.
Inspect and correct drivers
Open Device Manager and look for a yellow warning icon. Expand the category related to the symptom—such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Bluetooth or Universal Serial Bus controllers. Open the device’s Properties to read its status and driver details.

If the problem began after a driver change, use Driver > Roll Back Driver when that option is available. Otherwise, install a current driver from the hardware or computer manufacturer, or uninstall the affected device and restart so Windows can detect it again. Record the device name and driver version before changing it; that information helps you reverse the change or report it.
Check storage, updates and restore options
Make sure the system drive has enough free space for Windows to create temporary files and crash data. Install pending Windows updates that are offered without the error, then restart. If the crashes began after a recent system change and a restore point exists, use System Restore from Windows Recovery or by searching for “Create a restore point” and selecting System Restore. Choose a restore point dated before the problem; System Restore can remove drivers and applications installed afterward, but it does not normally remove personal documents.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If it appeared during installation or activation
When an installer or activation dialog shows the code, the application—not Windows—may have generated it. Close other installers, restart Windows and retry from the program’s official installation source. Check the product’s own repair or activation options, confirm that the account or license belongs to the intended edition, and record the complete dialog text.
Do not substitute a generic Windows Update reset for an application-specific failure unless Windows Update itself is also failing. Contact the application vendor with the screenshot, version, installer log if available, Windows build from winver, and the exact step that triggers the message.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf it appears at startup or sign-in
First determine whether Windows reaches the desktop. If it does, review recently installed drivers, startup applications and updates, then test after a normal restart. If it does not, use the Advanced startup path described above and try Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair only when startup itself is failing. Safe Mode can help remove a recent driver or application; System Restore is an alternative when a suitable restore point exists.
Best Value
Keep the full message and any recovery-screen details. A bare hexadecimal value is not enough to identify which startup component failed.
When to stop experimenting and escalate
Escalate when the code survives the relevant manual steps, returns across clean restarts, or is accompanied by data loss, repeated blue screens, overheating, or an inability to boot. Send Microsoft Support or the application’s vendor:
- The exact code and complete message, with a screenshot.
- The application or Windows component that displayed it.
- Your Windows edition, version and build from
winver. - The date, trigger and sequence of actions that reproduce it.
- Relevant Event Viewer details and any crash dump or installer log.
- The troubleshooting steps already completed and their results.
Do not download a program advertised as a special “0x0092664C fix.” Because the code is not verified in Microsoft’s current documentation, a code-specific download has no established authority and could introduce unwanted software or make diagnosis harder. Use official Windows recovery features and the support channel for the application that produced the message.
Windows 10 lifecycle consideration
Microsoft states: “Support for Windows 10 has ended on October 14, 2025.” If the affected computer still runs Windows 10, include that lifecycle status in your decision. Continue proportionate troubleshooting when you need to recover an existing installation, but also check whether the hardware can move to a supported Windows 11 release or whether a replacement plan is more appropriate. Do not assume that upgrading will fix this unverified code; preserve your files and capture the evidence first.
Quick Recap
Manual verification checklist
- The code was copied exactly and the complete message is saved.
- The triggering application or Windows component is known.
- The Windows version and build are recorded.
- The Windows Update troubleshooter was used only when updating was the trigger.
- Update components were reset only from an elevated Command Prompt and the computer was restarted afterward.
- DISM was run before
sfc /scannowwhen system-file repair was appropriate. - Crash cases were tested for recent hardware or driver changes and, where necessary, in Safe Mode.
- Logs, screenshots and dumps are preserved for escalation.
As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings adjustments, temporary-file cleanup, privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and has a free trial of at least two days followed by a paid subscription. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
