Error 0x00923175 has no verified definition in the Microsoft Windows error-code references covered here, so Windows 11 and Windows 10 do not have one universal fix for it. The code may come from an application, an installer, a hardware utility, Device Manager, or another component. Identify the program or device that displayed the message, then apply the instructions belonging to that source.
What error 0x00923175 means
Microsoft documents Windows system errors in defined numeric ranges, but third-party software can create its own hexadecimal codes. The value 0x00923175 cannot therefore be assigned a dependable meaning from the number alone. A complete diagnosis requires the full message, the application or device involved, the Windows edition and build, and the action that triggered the message.

This also means the code alone does not prove that Windows Update failed, that a driver is broken, or that system files are corrupted. Treat it as an identifier until its owner is established.
Before changing anything, capture the context
Record the evidence while the message is still visible. This prevents a generic repair attempt from destroying the clues needed to identify the originating component.

- Copy the complete error text, not just the hexadecimal value.
- Write down the application, installer, device name, or Windows screen that showed it.
- Note what you were doing immediately beforehand: starting Windows, installing an app, running Windows Update, activating software, connecting hardware, or opening a particular program.
- Record the date and time, whether the error reproduces after a restart, and whether another user account sees it.
- Check whether the computer runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 and record its edition and build number. Press Windows key + R, type
winver, and press Enter to view this information.
If the message appears only once and cannot be reproduced, keep a screenshot or copy of the text anyway. A support team can do more with the full wording and context than with the code by itself.
Run Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool
- Open Microsoft’s official Error Lookup Tool.
- Enter
0x00923175as a hexadecimal value and run the lookup. - Compare any returned text with the application, device, and Windows version you recorded.
- If the tool returns no matching entry, stop treating the value as a standard Windows system error. It may be an application-specific or hardware-utility code.
Microsoft describes the lookup data as point-in-time information. A matching line is useful evidence, not a complete diagnosis; interpret it alongside the Windows version and the program that produced the message. A blank result is also meaningful because it tells you to investigate the originating vendor rather than apply a guessed Windows repair.
Choose the fix by where the message appears
Use the branch that matches the screen or operation that displayed the code. Do not combine instructions from unrelated branches simply because they contain the same hexadecimal value.

If an application shows the error
- Identify the application name and exact version from its title bar, About page, or installed-app entry.
- Search that application’s official documentation and support channel for the complete message and code.
- Follow the vendor’s documented update, repair, reset, or reinstall procedure for that version.
- Tell the vendor whether the error returns after restarting Windows and whether it occurs for a particular file, account, or action.
A third-party application’s code is outside Microsoft’s standard Windows error tables. Microsoft’s general guidance is to investigate such codes with the service or software vendor that generated them. Avoid deleting application data or editing the registry unless that vendor specifically instructs you to do so and explains how to restore it.
If Device Manager shows the code
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, read the Device status box and copy its complete wording.
- Follow the resolution presented in Device status, if one is provided.
Microsoft’s published Device Manager list does not include every possible code. If 0x00923175 is not listed, use the device manufacturer’s support documentation or contact the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support with the device name, hardware details, full status text, Windows build, and any recent hardware or driver change.
If it appears during Windows Update
Do not label it a Windows Update error solely because the message appeared while an update was running. First record the update screen’s complete text and identify whether the message names a particular update, application, service, or device. Use Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool, then check the named component’s own support documentation. If no component is named, provide the full update message and Windows build to Microsoft Support rather than applying a code-specific fix that has not been established.

If it appears during software installation or activation
Capture the installer or activation product name, version, and exact stage at which it fails. Check the software publisher’s documentation for that release and use its documented installer or licensing recovery steps. A code generated by an installer is owned by that installer even when the window appears on Windows 10 or 11.

If it appears at startup or in a background utility
Note whether the message appears before sign-in, immediately after sign-in, or only when a particular utility loads. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps to identify recently added software, but do not remove an item solely because it is unfamiliar. Match the full message to the utility’s official support information, and preserve the timestamp and Windows build when requesting help.

| Where you see the code | Likely owner to investigate | First evidence to collect | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application dialog | The application publisher | App name and version, full dialog text, operation that failed | Use the publisher’s documentation or support channel |
| Device Manager | The device, driver, or hardware vendor | Device name, Properties > Device status text, recent hardware changes | Follow Device status; if unlisted, contact the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support |
| Installer or activation window | The installer or software publisher | Product/version, installation stage, complete message | Use that publisher’s documented recovery process |
| Windows Update screen | Windows Update or a named component | Update name or number, full text, Windows edition/build | Identify the named component before choosing a repair |
| Startup or background utility | The utility that loads at startup | When it appears, utility name, recent software changes | Match the full message to the utility’s support information |
The useful comparisons are the location of the message, the component that owns the window, whether the problem returns after a restart, and whether the vendor publishes a matching support article. Those four checks usually narrow the investigation more effectively than the hexadecimal value alone.
What to send when you need support
Submit one concise evidence bundle instead of reporting only “error 0x00923175.” Include:
- The exact code and complete message, copied verbatim.
- The application, device, installer, or Windows screen that displayed it.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11, edition, and build.
- The action immediately before the error and whether a restart changes the result.
- Relevant recent changes, such as a new device, driver, application, update, or activation attempt.
- A screenshot when the wording or layout supplies information that cannot be copied.
For a Device Manager case, add the device’s name and the complete text in Properties > Device status. For an application case, add the application version. This gives the responsible vendor enough context to distinguish its own code from a standard Windows status value.

- Assuming the code has a universal meaning: Windows and third-party programs use different code systems.
- Running a random “one-click fix”: Without an identified owner, an automated repair can change unrelated settings without addressing the cause.
- Calling it malware or corruption from the number alone: The code does not establish either conclusion.
- Using a Device Manager code list as if it were complete: Microsoft says its published list does not contain every possible Device Manager code.
- Sending support only the hexadecimal value: The full message, source, Windows build, and trigger are essential diagnostic information.
When there is no matching lookup result
A missing result in Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool is not evidence that Windows is damaged. It indicates that the value is not present in the tool’s Microsoft status and error-code tables at that point in time, or that the displayed code belongs to another product. Return to the screen that produced it, identify its owner, and use that owner’s documentation. If the owner remains unclear, escalate with the evidence bundle above to Microsoft Support or the relevant hardware or software vendor.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files, while also offering settings adjustments, temporary-file cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredder and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a subscription, results vary, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus protection.
