Capture the complete context before changing anything
The fastest way to turn an unknown code into an actionable case is to record exactly where it appeared. Capture the information while the message is still visible; a later restart can remove useful details from a transient dialog.

- Copy the complete message. Record the title-bar text, every line in the dialog, the hexadecimal value, and any buttons or file names shown. Take a screenshot as well, but keep a typed copy for searching and support tickets.
- Identify the source. Write down the application name, installer name, device model, or Windows screen that displayed the message. Note whether it appeared in Device Manager, Event Viewer, an ordinary application window, a setup wizard, or immediately after sign-in.
- Record the trigger. State what happened immediately before the error: plugging in hardware, waking from sleep, installing an update, launching an application, connecting to a network, printing, signing in, or performing a particular operation.
- Record Windows details. Open Settings > System > About and note whether the edition is Windows 10 or Windows 11, the edition name, and the OS build. For a support case, include the date and time shown by the computer.
- Describe the scope. Note whether the problem affects one user account, one device, one application, or the whole computer. Record what still works and whether a restart temporarily changes the behavior.
Do not remove a device, delete an application, or install a replacement driver before saving this information. A support engineer can diagnose a reproducible sequence far more effectively than an isolated hexadecimal value.
Find the component that generated the code
When the message is in Device Manager
- Press Windows key+X and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category that contains the affected hardware. Look for a warning icon, a recently connected device, or the model named in the message.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, read the Device status box. Microsoft’s documented workflow uses this area to display the device code and its accompanying text.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider, driver date, and driver version. Do not uninstall or update it yet unless the device maker’s instructions call for that action.
If the Device status box shows 0x0091B7D7 or the same message, note the exact device model and hardware vendor. Because Microsoft’s list does not include every Device Manager code, an unlisted value should be taken to the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support rather than matched to a random code found in a search result.
When it appears in Event Viewer
- Press Windows key+R, type
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Check Windows Logs > System for hardware, driver, startup, or service events. Check Windows Logs > Application for a desktop program or installer.
- Use Find in the Actions pane to search for
0091B7D7, the application name, the device name, or the time of the failure. - Open the matching event and record the Source, Event ID, level, date, and full text. Use Save Selected Events to export an
.evtxcopy before clearing logs or making repairs.
An Event Viewer entry that contains the value but names a particular source is more useful than the code alone. The source determines whether you should consult a hardware maker, an application vendor, an installer’s support channel, or Microsoft.

Look at the window title and the program’s own Help, About, or support information. Record the exact application version and installation source. If the message appears only while installing or updating one product, keep the installer file name, package version, and any setup log path shown by the wizard. Do not assume that a code emitted by an installer belongs to Windows itself; many installers display their own status values.

Use Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool
Microsoft documents a signed Error Lookup Tool that translates hexadecimal status values into message text defined in Windows header files. It can tell you whether a value has a standard Windows message, but it cannot identify a vendor’s private code or explain a component-specific failure that is not defined in those headers.
- Obtain the signed Error Lookup Tool from Microsoft’s documentation and place the executable in a folder you can open from Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Open that folder in Windows Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Run the documented format
Err_6.4.5.exe <error code>. Substitute the value shown by the message, preserving its hexadecimal form. - Save the returned text with your other evidence. If the tool reports no matching message, that is useful information: the code may be vendor-defined, application-specific, or formatted differently by the originating component.
The tool’s output is not a diagnosis by itself. Compare it with the full message, source name, trigger, and event log. A generic status description must not override a device or application vendor’s instructions.
Preserve logs and current versions
Before changing a driver or reinstalling software, preserve the state that produced the error. Export the relevant Event Viewer entry, copy the application or installer log, and record the current driver version from the device’s Properties dialog. If the message is intermittent, keep a short timeline with the time, action, connected hardware, and whether a restart changed the result.

Avoid registry cleaners, unofficial driver repositories, and scripts that promise to repair an unknown code; they can destroy the evidence needed to identify the owner of the message.

Apply a repair only after the source is known
If a device or driver is confirmed
Use the device maker’s support page and the exact model, hardware revision, and Windows edition recorded earlier. Prefer the vendor’s current official package and read its release notes for the affected Windows version. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, ask the vendor whether a rollback is supported; do not treat rollback as a universal remedy.
When the vendor specifically recommends a reinstall, follow its sequence exactly. Some packages require disconnecting the device, restarting, or installing a prerequisite before reconnecting it. After the change, return to Device Manager, open the device’s Properties, and verify whether the Device status text has changed. If the code returns, restore the previous driver or configuration and send the collected logs to the vendor.
If a desktop application is confirmed
- Check the application publisher’s support documentation for the exact hexadecimal value and your application version.
- Install the publisher’s update only from its normal, trusted distribution channel, and note the version before and after the change.
- If the publisher documents a repair option, use the application’s own repair command or the Windows app settings that it identifies. Do not delete profile folders or caches unless the publisher says which folder is safe and explains what data will be removed.
- If the error occurs for only one Windows account, test the publisher’s documented clean-profile or new-account procedure after backing up user data. If every account is affected, include that scope in the support case.
Reinstalling an application without saving its logs can erase the clues needed to determine whether the failure is a missing dependency, permission problem, damaged profile, or application defect. Preserve evidence first.

Use the exact package version and prerequisites specified by the publisher. Verify that the package matches Windows 10 or Windows 11 and the correct processor architecture when the vendor provides separate builds. If setup offers a log location, export the log before closing the wizard. Report the step that failed, such as detection, file extraction, service creation, or final configuration, rather than reporting only the hexadecimal value.

Do not download a replacement installer from an unrelated mirror or disable security controls permanently to force setup through. If the publisher provides a cleanup utility, use it only after reading what it removes and after saving the logs.
If Microsoft or the vendor points to system-file repair
The code alone is not a reason to run SFC or DISM. Use these tools only when the originating documentation or a qualified support engineer connects the failure to Windows component corruption. When instructed, open Windows Terminal (Admin) and run the exact commands and order specified by that guidance, such as sfc /scannow or DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Record the result, restart if instructed, and test the original trigger again.
System-file tools may report that they found no integrity violations; that result does not disprove a device, application, or installer fault. Conversely, a repaired system file does not prove that it caused 0x0091B7D7. Keep the command output with the support package.

A search result for 0x0000091B is not an answer for 0x0091B7D7. The shorter value is a different hexadecimal code. A third-party page may label 0x0000091B “Operation Invalid for This Device” and recommend driver, SFC, or DISM actions, but that diagnosis cannot be transferred to 0x0091B7D7.

When to escalate instead of experimenting
Contact the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support when the code is shown by Device Manager but is absent from Microsoft’s list, when the device stops functioning, or when the error returns after the vendor’s documented procedure. Contact the application or installer publisher when the message appears only in that product. Include:
- The complete error text and a screenshot.
- Windows edition and build, application or driver version, and device model.
- The exact trigger and whether the issue affects one account, one device, or the whole system.
- Device Manager status text, Event Viewer source and Event ID, and exported logs.
- The Error Lookup Tool result, including a statement that it returned no message if that occurred.
- Every change already made, with dates and the result after each change.
Remove passwords, license keys, personal documents, and other sensitive data from logs before sending them. Keep the original files privately so you can provide an unmodified copy through the vendor’s secure upload process if requested.
Is it safe to ignore the code?
If the message appeared once, no device or application is malfunctioning, and it does not recur after the original operation, record it and monitor the same trigger. Do not ignore repeated messages, failed hardware, data loss, crashes, or an application that will not start. Those symptoms make the source-identification steps above more urgent, but they still do not make the hexadecimal value a diagnosis.
The practical resolution for an unknown 0x0091B7D7 is therefore evidence, not guesswork: identify where it appeared, run the documented lookup, preserve logs and versions, and let the named component’s vendor select the repair.
