Error 0x0091666A has no confirmed, general Microsoft meaning. The hexadecimal value alone is not enough to identify a failed component, and it should not automatically be treated as a driver, malware, or hardware error. The first question is where Windows displayed it: Device Manager, Windows Setup, Event Viewer, or a third-party application.
Use the location and the complete message to choose the correct repair path. Record the details, inspect the relevant Windows page, and test the Microsoft repair steps for that context. If the value is not recognized by Microsoft’s published code information, send the evidence to the hardware or software vendor or Microsoft Support instead of guessing.

What error 0x0091666A tells you
Windows error values are hexadecimal identifiers, but the number does not explain itself. Microsoft states that its Device Manager error-code list does not contain every possible code. Because 0x0091666A was not identified in the authoritative Microsoft material available for this guide, there is no verified description, cause, or one-size-fits-all fix for it.
That uncertainty matters because the same-looking value can be emitted by different layers of software. A Device Manager message is tied to a device status record. A setup message is part of an installation or upgrade workflow. An Event Viewer entry may be an event payload generated by a particular service. A third-party program can display its own application-defined value. Treating all four situations as the same problem can make a working system less stable.

The practical rule is simple: identify the originating window first, then follow the branch below. Do not infer a cause from the hexadecimal value alone.
Capture the full context before changing anything
A bare code is insufficient for vendor-specific diagnosis. Before uninstalling hardware, resetting update components, or changing startup services, create a short record that another person can reproduce.
- Copy the complete text. Include the words before and after
0x0091666A, any named file, device, service, or event ID, and whether Windows offered a button such as Retry, Cancel, or Troubleshoot. - Identify the source window. Write down whether it was Device Manager, Windows Setup, Settings, Event Viewer, a game, a security product, or another application. Include the application name and version when shown.
- Record timing. Note whether the message appears at startup, when a device is plugged in, during an upgrade, after Windows Update, or only when one program runs.
- Record the system. Note Windows 10 or Windows 11, the installed build shown in Settings > System > About, and the computer or device model.
- Preserve recent-change information. List newly installed drivers, peripherals, applications, updates, or firmware. Do not remove a component merely because it was installed recently; the information is useful even when the change is unrelated.
If the message disappears, keep the record anyway. A later recurrence is much easier to diagnose when the original wording and timing are available.
If the code appears in Device Manager
Device Manager is the only branch in which Windows presents a device-specific status location. Open Device Manager, expand the category containing the affected hardware, right-click the device, choose Properties, and read the Device status field on the General tab. Microsoft explains that Device Manager codes and their code-specific resolutions are found there.

Read the device identity, not just the hexadecimal value
Write down the device name, manufacturer, hardware model, and any status text surrounding the code. If more than one device is listed, confirm which one reproduces the message. A generic category such as “Unknown device” is still useful; record its Hardware Ids from the Details tab so the hardware vendor can identify it.
Apply only a resolution that matches the status text
Microsoft’s listed Device Manager codes have individual procedures. Follow the procedure associated with the status shown in Device status rather than applying a random registry edit or deleting unrelated drivers. If Device Manager shows 0x0091666A but the value is absent from Microsoft’s published list, the absence is itself a diagnostic result: contact the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support with the complete status text, device identity, Windows edition and build, and the steps that reproduce it.
Check for a recent hardware or software change
If the problem started immediately after connecting a peripheral or installing a vendor package, shut down normally, disconnect only the nonessential device, and test once. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that the device is defective. Reconnect it before making a permanent decision, and retain the model and port information for escalation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf it appears during Windows installation or upgrade
Setup failures require a different sequence because the installer can be affected by attached hardware, damaged system files, startup services, or Windows Update components. Use an administrator account and save open work before beginning.

- Disconnect nonessential peripherals. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and the installation media or storage required by Setup. Remove external drives, docks, printers, cameras, and other USB devices unless Setup specifically needs them.
- Restart and retry once. A clean restart separates a transient setup interruption from a repeatable failure. Record whether the code appears at the same percentage or stage.
- Run System File Checker. In an elevated Command Prompt, run
sfc /scannowand wait for it to finish. Record the exact result. Do not close the window while the verification is running. - Try a clean boot. Open System Configuration, use the Services tab to hide Microsoft services, disable the remaining non-Microsoft services, and use Task Manager’s Startup area to disable startup applications. Restart and run Setup again. After testing, return to System Configuration and restore the normal startup selections so security and productivity software load normally.
- Work through Windows Update troubleshooting. Use the Windows Update troubleshooter available for your Windows version, then check that Windows Update-related services can run. If the installer identifies a particular setup code, follow Microsoft’s corresponding cache or component-reset instructions rather than applying a reset intended for a different code.
- Use DISM only when the applicable setup guidance calls for it. Microsoft’s installation-error procedures include Deployment Image Servicing and Management for particular setup codes. Use the command and servicing options specified for that exact code and edition; do not substitute an unrelated command from a forum post.
- Retry with the same minimal hardware. If the upgrade succeeds, reconnect one peripheral at a time and test after each connection. If it fails with the same message, preserve the Setup log location and the stage at which it stopped for escalation.
A clean boot changes startup behavior temporarily; it does not uninstall applications. If a required security or storage service is disabled during the test, restore normal startup before using the computer for routine work.
If the code appears in Event Viewer
Event Viewer entries are records created by a provider, not a universal list of Windows error meanings. Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs (especially System and Application) around the timestamp of the failure. Also check the provider or source name, event ID, level, task category, and the General and Details views.
Copy the event’s complete message and XML details. The provider name and event ID usually identify which service generated the entry; 0x0091666A by itself does not. Compare the timestamp with a restart, update, device connection, or application launch. If the event occurs only once and no function is failing, monitor it rather than deleting logs. If it repeats, search the provider’s documentation or contact its vendor with the complete event record.

Do not assume that a program’s hexadecimal value is a Windows system code. If the application works after a clean restart but fails during normal startup, compare the startup services and plug-ins rather than changing Windows system files. Send the vendor the full message, application logs, Windows version/build, and a precise reproduction sequence.
Test whether Microsoft recognizes the value
Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool (ERR) is a command-line utility that searches compiled Windows error tables. The Microsoft download page lists version 6.4.5, published July 15, 2024. It can tell you whether the value maps to a recognized Windows constant, but a lookup result is not a diagnosis of the device or application that produced the message.
- Obtain ERR from Microsoft’s official download page and note that the listed version is 6.4.5, published July 15, 2024.
- Open Command Prompt and change to the folder containing the utility.
- Run the utility using its documented query syntax and enter
0x0091666A. - Record the returned constant, text, and whether the tool reports no match.
- Compare that result with the original window, provider, device, or setup stage. A recognized constant still needs to be interpreted in that context.
If ERR reports no match, that does not prove the value is malicious or meaningless. It may be a vendor-defined value, a value formatted by an application, or a code outside the tables searched by that utility.

What to do after a recent update or hardware change
A temporal connection is useful evidence, but it does not establish causation. First reproduce the issue with the smallest change possible: disconnect one nonessential peripheral, or use the application’s documented repair or update procedure. Avoid making several changes at once because you will not know which change affected the result.
Best Value
If a vendor provides a rollback option for the named device or application, record the current version before using it and follow the vendor’s instructions. Do not delete a driver package, remove a system service, or edit the registry solely because the code contains a particular sequence of digits. Those actions can remove useful evidence or create a second problem.
Validate the result safely
A repair is meaningful only when the original trigger no longer reproduces the failure. Test the exact action that first displayed 0x0091666A: reconnect the device, repeat the upgrade stage, open the same application, or check the same event condition. Then restart Windows once and test again.
- Confirm that the affected device or application is available, not merely that the message disappeared.
- Check Device Manager for a new warning icon if the original issue involved hardware.
- For an upgrade, verify the Windows edition and build in Settings > System > About and confirm that Windows Update can check normally.
- For an application, review its own logs after a successful launch and after the action that previously failed.
- Reconnect removed peripherals one at a time, restarting only when the vendor’s procedure requires it.
If the error returns, restore the last known working configuration and use the evidence bundle below. Repeating the same unsuccessful reset rarely adds information.
When and how to escalate
Escalation is the correct next step when the value is absent from Microsoft’s published Device Manager list, when Setup fails repeatedly after the documented checks, or when a named application or device vendor owns the component producing the message.
Send one concise bundle:
- The complete error text and a screenshot that includes the window title.
- The originating application, Device Manager category, Event Viewer provider, or Setup stage.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and build, plus the computer model.
- The affected device model and hardware IDs when available.
- The exact date and time, frequency, and steps that reproduce the failure.
- Recent updates, peripherals, drivers, firmware, or application changes.
- Results from
sfc /scannow, the ERR lookup, clean-boot testing, and any Windows Update troubleshooting already performed.
Contact the hardware vendor when Device Manager names its device. Contact the application vendor when the value appears inside that program. Use Microsoft Support for an unlisted Windows or Device Manager value, or for a Setup failure that remains after Microsoft’s applicable procedure.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Guessing from the number. The hexadecimal format does not identify a driver, virus, or failing component.
- Using a generic registry cleaner or “one-click” repair. There is no evidence that such a tool understands this vendor-specific value, and changing the registry can complicate later diagnosis.
- Installing an unrelated driver package. A driver change is appropriate only when the affected device and the vendor’s instructions identify it as relevant.
- Resetting Windows Update components indiscriminately. Cache and component resets should match the Setup code and Microsoft’s procedure for that Windows edition.
- Deleting logs. Event and Setup records are often the evidence a vendor needs to identify the source.
- Calling the code a security incident. Nothing in the code alone establishes malware or unauthorized activity; use your existing security software and the originating vendor’s guidance if other security symptoms are present.
A practical decision sequence
- Stop and capture the complete message, source window, timing, Windows version/build, and affected component.
- Branch to Device Manager, Setup, Event Viewer, or the third-party application’s procedure.
- Use the least invasive context-specific test first: Device status inspection, peripheral removal during Setup, provider identification, or application log review.
- Run
sfc /scannowand try a clean boot only when the problem is part of installation or upgrade troubleshooting. - Use Microsoft’s ERR utility to check whether the value maps to a recognized constant, without treating the result as a diagnosis.
- Validate by repeating the original action after a restart.
- Escalate with the complete evidence when the value remains unlisted or the failure persists.
