How to Fix Error 0x00916354 on Windows 11 and 10

Error 0x00916354 has no verified meaning in Microsoft’s published Windows error references. It may be mistyped, generated by a particular application or installer, or shown by a Windows component with additional text that identifies the real failure. The correct fix depends on when it appears: during Windows Update, while upgrading, after startup, before the sign-in screen, or inside a third-party app. Capture the complete message and a screenshot before changing the registry or running code-specific repairs.

What error 0x00916354 means

Microsoft’s documented Windows error-code material does not identify 0x00916354, so assigning it a definite cause would be guesswork. The digits alone do not tell you whether an update, boot loader, driver, installer, or application produced the message. Similar-looking hexadecimal codes can belong to completely different components, and a mistyped character can lead to an entirely different diagnosis.

Write down the exact wording around the number, the program or Windows screen that displayed it, and the action you were taking. For example, “Windows Update failed,” “the installer returned this code,” and “the PC cannot start” require different recovery paths. Do not import a registry file, delete system folders, or run a repair command copied from a page that assumes a meaning Microsoft has not confirmed.

Choose the path that matches what you see

Where the code appears Does Windows reach the desktop? Start with Is installation media needed?
Settings > Windows Update, or while an upgrade is running Usually yes Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, update checks, and upgrade preparation No for the first steps
After signing in, in a setup program or maintenance utility Yes Record the application name, repair or reinstall that application, and check its own support guidance No
Immediately after power-on, before Windows reaches the sign-in screen No Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and Startup Repair Often; a Windows installation USB is the reliable way to enter WinRE
After a recent update, driver installation, or software change Maybe Undo the recent change in Safe Mode or Recovery options, then repair system files if the failure is a boot problem Sometimes

The numeric code should not determine the branch until an authoritative source identifies it. The screen and the event that preceded it are the useful evidence.

Capture the evidence before changing anything

  1. Photograph or screenshot the entire dialog, including its title, application name, and any text above or below 0x00916354.
  2. Note the date and time, whether the computer was installing an update, and whether the failure happened after a restart, driver change, or application installation.
  3. Record whether you can sign in, open Settings, and connect to the internet.
  4. If the dialog belongs to a third-party program, note that program’s exact version and where it was downloaded.
  5. Keep the screenshot and any setup log available if you need to contact Microsoft or the application publisher.

This information prevents a boot repair from being applied to an application error, or an update reset from being applied to a damaged boot configuration.

If the code appears during Windows Update or an upgrade

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Microsoft provides a Windows Update troubleshooter for Windows 11 and Windows 10. Use the instructions for the edition you have, then restart before checking again.

Windows 11

  1. Open the Get Help app and run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter.
  2. If you prefer the Settings route, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Select Windows Update, choose Run, and allow the checks and repairs to finish.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  2. Select Additional troubleshooters, then Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
  3. Apply any suggested repair and restart.
  4. Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Running the check again after a restart matters because the troubleshooter may repair a service or cache that cannot be used until Windows reloads it.

Check the update services

If the troubleshooter reports that services are stopped, press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Locate Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and Cryptographic Services. Their normal startup settings vary by Windows build, but each must be able to start when Windows checks for updates. Right-click a stopped service and choose Start; for a running service, choose Restart. Do not disable these services permanently.

Reset the Windows Update cache when repeated checks fail

Use this procedure only for an update or upgrade failure. It does not establish what 0x00916354 means. Sign in with an administrator account, open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), and run each line separately:

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
net stop msiserver
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start msiserver
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv

The commands stop update-related services, rename their local download and catalog caches, and start the services again. Windows creates fresh folders during the next check. If a service reports that it was not running, continue; if a rename says the folder does not exist, continue to the next line. Restart Windows and select Check for updates. If the reset fails because a file is in use, restart and repeat the procedure before opening other programs.

Prepare for an upgrade or installation failure

For a feature upgrade or Windows installation that stops with the code, Microsoft recommends reducing common sources of interference:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Disconnect nonessential external hardware such as docks, printers, storage devices, and USB accessories. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and the installation media connected.
  • Install available Windows updates and current hardware drivers before retrying, when Windows still starts normally.
  • Temporarily uninstall non-Microsoft antivirus software and other nonessential applications when the installer identifies them as incompatible. Reinstall compatible protection after the upgrade succeeds.
  • Make room on the system drive. Microsoft states that an upgrade requires at least 16 GB of free space for a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system.
  • Back up documents and other irreplaceable files before beginning another upgrade attempt.

Those space figures are minimums stated by Microsoft for the upgrade process, not a guarantee that every installation will succeed. A large feature update, language pack, recovery partition, or temporary rollback files can require more working room.

If the code appears before Windows reaches the desktop

Enter Windows Recovery Environment

A blank screen, repeated restart, or code shown before the sign-in screen is a startup problem until proven otherwise. If Windows cannot open its recovery options by itself, start the computer from Windows installation media on a USB flash drive. On the setup screen, select Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced options. The drive letter assigned to Windows in WinRE may differ from the usual C:.

Run Startup Repair first

  1. In Advanced options, select Startup Repair.
  2. Choose the Windows installation if prompted and provide the account password.
  3. Allow the analysis and automatic repair to finish; do not power off the computer during the process.
  4. Restart and check whether Windows reaches the sign-in screen.

Startup Repair analyzes startup logs and attempts automatic repairs. Its log is stored at %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. If the repair does not solve the problem, copy the log or photograph the result before moving to command-line repairs.

Use Safe Mode when a recent change is suspected

From Advanced options, choose Startup Settings > Restart, then select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking if you need internet access. If Windows starts there, undo the most recent nonessential driver or application change, and restart normally. Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers; a problem that disappears there often points to a recently loaded driver, startup program, or service rather than the hexadecimal number itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use boot commands only for a confirmed boot failure

Open Advanced options > Command Prompt after backing up data where possible. These commands can alter boot configuration or scan the disk. First identify the Windows volume with diskpart and list volume, then type exit. Substitute the correct Windows drive letter if it is not C:.

BOOTREC /FIXMBR
BOOTREC /FIXBOOT
BOOTREC /SCANOS
BOOTREC /REBUILDBCD
  • BOOTREC /FIXMBR writes a new master boot record without changing the partition table.
  • BOOTREC /FIXBOOT writes a new boot sector. On some systems it can return “Access is denied”; do not force unrelated partition changes just to bypass that message.
  • BOOTREC /SCANOS searches for Windows installations that are not listed in the boot configuration.
  • BOOTREC /REBUILDBCD rebuilds the boot configuration data after you confirm the Windows installation it finds.

For file corruption, run an offline System File Checker scan with the correct Windows and boot-volume letters:

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C: /offwindir=C:Windows

For suspected disk errors, use:

chkdsk C: /f /r

chkdsk /f /r can take a long time and places additional load on a failing drive. Stop and seek data-recovery help if the drive is making unusual noises, repeatedly disconnecting, or showing signs of physical failure. These commands are not appropriate merely because the code contains hexadecimal digits; use them when the symptom is genuinely a startup or disk problem.

If Windows starts and a third-party app shows the code

When the desktop loads normally and one installer or application displays 0x00916354, treat the application as the likely owner of the message until its publisher documents otherwise. Record the full dialog and version, then:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the application and restart Windows.
  2. Use the application’s own Repair or Modify option in Settings > Apps > Installed apps, if available.
  3. Download a current installer from the publisher’s official source and reinstall only after backing up the application’s data or settings.
  4. Check whether the application supports your Windows edition and whether the error began after a specific plug-in, driver, or update.
  5. Give the publisher the exact text, screenshot, version, and steps that reproduce the failure. Do not substitute a Windows Update reset unless Windows Update itself is failing.

What to do when the code appears after an update but Windows still works

If you can sign in, first create a backup of important files. Then open Settings > Windows Update > Update history (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history (Windows 10) and note the update installed immediately before the first message. If the failure began directly after that change, use the recovery option to uninstall the latest quality update, or remove the newly installed application or driver from Safe Mode. Restart and test the original action again. Keep the update removed only long enough to confirm the cause; install a corrected release when Microsoft or the hardware/application publisher provides one.

Common mistakes that make this error harder to diagnose

  • Searching only the number: without the surrounding message, search results can confuse an application code with a Windows code.
  • Editing the registry first: an unverified registry change can prevent Windows or an application from starting and is difficult to reverse.
  • Running boot commands on a working installation: Bootrec and disk scans are for startup or disk symptoms, not ordinary update dialogs.
  • Ignoring architecture and free space: the 16 GB and 20 GB figures apply to 32-bit and 64-bit upgrades respectively; check your edition before retrying.
  • Leaving peripherals connected: a dock, external drive, or printer can interfere with an upgrade even when the device itself works normally.
  • Repeating an installer without recording changes: note each driver, security product, or application removed so you can restore a known working configuration.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to run, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update security fixes, technical assistance, or security updates under its standard support statement. If the affected computer is still on Windows 10, confirm its support and upgrade options before spending time on repeated installation attempts. This support date does not explain 0x00916354; it is a separate lifecycle consideration.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review certain privacy and vulnerability settings, and provide an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription, complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.

When to escalate

Contact Microsoft Support or the application publisher when the full message identifies a component, Startup Repair and the documented recovery steps fail, or the computer repeatedly loses access to the system drive. Include the screenshot, Windows edition and build, update history, the action that triggered the code, and any Startup Repair or application log. If the storage device shows physical symptoms, prioritize a verified backup or professional data recovery over repeated repair attempts.
