Error 0x0091581A has no confirmed Microsoft component mapping, so there is no single guaranteed fix. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, start with Microsoft’s elevated DISM repair followed by System File Checker (SFC). If the error appears during Windows Update, also run the Get Help troubleshooter, check the disk, and perform a clean restart. When DISM reports that source files cannot be found, point it to matching Windows installation media.

What error 0x0091581A means

Microsoft has not published a definitive explanation that assigns 0x0091581A to one Windows component or one specific failure. The only page identified for this exact code is a third-party Spanish-language article, so its explanation should be treated as provisional rather than as an official diagnosis.

That page associates the code with several situations:

  • A software installation or uninstallation that did not complete correctly.
  • An improper shutdown.
  • Deletion or corruption of a system file or registry entry required by Windows or an application.

Those possibilities overlap with broader Windows repair guidance: damaged protected files, a damaged component store, update problems, or disk errors can all produce symptoms that look similar. The timing of the message is therefore important. Note whether it appears while installing an application, removing one, running Windows Update, upgrading Windows, or starting a particular program.

Before you begin

  1. Save open work and back up important documents. The commands below are designed as in-place repairs, but a current backup is prudent before any system repair.
  2. Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, external drives, and docks. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and any device required to reproduce the problem.
  3. Record the exact text of the error and the action that triggers it. If an update or upgrade fails, write down its separate update code as well.
  4. Use an administrator account, or have administrator credentials available. DISM and SFC must run from an elevated Command Prompt.
  5. Keep the computer connected to power. DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update, so an internet connection is useful for the first attempt.

Run DISM, then SFC

Microsoft’s standard sequence is DISM first and SFC second. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC depends on; SFC then scans protected system files and replaces damaged copies with cached versions.

1. Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.

The window title should indicate that it has administrator privileges. If you receive an access-denied message, close it and repeat this step with the elevated option.

2. Repair the component store with DISM

At the prompt, enter this command exactly:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Press Enter and let the operation finish. The scan can pause for a while at one percentage; do not close the window or restart the computer during the operation. DISM normally uses Windows Update as its source for replacement files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When DISM completes successfully, leave the administrator window open. A successful completion means the component-repair stage finished; it does not by itself prove that every protected system file is healthy.

3. Verify protected files with SFC

Run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent before closing Command Prompt. SFC checks all protected system files and attempts to replace corrupted files with a cached copy. Restart Windows after the command completes, then repeat the action that originally produced 0x0091581A.

How to interpret the result

  • If DISM completes and SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test the affected installation, update, or application.
  • If SFC reports no integrity violations, the protected files it checked were not identified as corrupted. Continue with the branch that matches when the error appears.
  • If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, confirm that it completed, and then run SFC once more. Persistent failures point to a damaged source, disk problem, or another component that requires additional diagnosis.

When DISM says the source files could not be found

This message means DISM could not obtain suitable repair files from its normal Windows Update source. Microsoft documents using a running Windows installation, a Windows DVD, removable media, or a network share instead.

Use a matching repair source

  1. Obtain Windows installation media that matches the installed environment. Match the Windows edition and system architecture, and use media appropriate for the installed Windows generation and build whenever possible.
  2. Connect the USB drive, DVD, mounted installation image, or network share and identify the folder that contains the Windows repair files.
  3. In an elevated Command Prompt, substitute the real path for the placeholder in this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

The example path C:RepairSourceWindows is only a placeholder. Replace it with the path to the matching Windows folder on your media or share. The /LimitAccess switch tells DISM not to contact Windows Update and to use the specified source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Wait for DISM to reach completion. If it reports that the source is incompatible, verify the edition, architecture, and Windows version represented by the media.
  2. After DISM succeeds, run sfc /scannow again and wait for 100 percent verification.

Do not use a random Windows folder from another computer as a source. A mismatch can leave DISM unable to repair the component store or can introduce a version conflict. If you do not have suitable media, create or obtain installation media for the same Windows release before trying the source-based command again.

If 0x0091581A appears during Windows Update

Microsoft lists corrupted or missing system files among common causes of several update failures, but it does not specifically identify 0x0091581A as an update code. Use the following order when the message appears while checking, downloading, or installing an update.

1. Run the Windows 11 Get Help troubleshooter

Open the Windows 11 Get Help app and follow its Windows Update troubleshooting flow. It can check common update conditions and provide the next action for the current installation.

2. Check for updates again

Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and allow any pending restart to complete. If the same code returns, note the update identifier and continue rather than repeatedly starting the same failed installation.

3. Check the system drive

Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

chkdsk /f C:

The /f option asks Check Disk to repair file-system errors. Because the system volume is usually in use, Windows may ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y when prompted, restart, and let the disk check finish before Windows loads. Do not interrupt that examination.

4. Perform a clean restart

Close applications, remove nonessential peripherals, restart Windows, and wait for the desktop to load before opening other programs. Then run the DISM and SFC sequence again. A clean restart helps distinguish a transient startup or background-process conflict from persistent component corruption.

5. Retry the update

After the restart and repairs finish, return to Settings > Windows Update and retry the update once. If it fails again, preserve the update code and the DISM, SFC, and Check Disk results for escalation.

If the error occurs during an upgrade or installation

When 0x0091581A appears while upgrading Windows or installing a feature update, first identify which update failed and record the code shown by Windows. Microsoft’s guidance is to repair system files with DISM and SFC, then contact Microsoft Support if the self-service steps do not resolve the installation failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Cancel or close the failed installer only after Windows reports that it has stopped, then restart normally.
  2. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth from an elevated Command Prompt.
  3. Run sfc /scannow and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
  4. If DISM cannot find source files, repeat the repair with matching installation media and /LimitAccess.
  5. Retry the upgrade or installation once, using the recorded update code to distinguish a new failure from the original one.
  6. If the failure persists, provide Microsoft Support with the exact 0x0091581A message, the separate update code, and the results of DISM, SFC, and Check Disk.

Choose the repair path that fits the symptom

Approach Built by Installation media required Main target Command-line skill
DISM followed by SFC Microsoft No, when Windows Update can supply files Component-store and protected system-file corruption Elevated Command Prompt and two commands
DISM with /Source and /LimitAccess Microsoft Yes, when the specified source is used Component repair when the normal source is unavailable or damaged Elevated Command Prompt and an accurate source path
Get Help Windows Update troubleshooter Microsoft No Update-related checks and guided actions Graphical steps
chkdsk /f C: Microsoft No File-system errors on the system drive Elevated Command Prompt; may require a restart
Microsoft Support Microsoft Support may request additional information Persistent upgrade, installation, or update failures Provide recorded codes and repair results

Common mistakes that make the repair fail

  • Running from a normal Command Prompt: DISM or SFC may fail without elevation. Reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
  • Closing the window early: both tools can appear idle while they process files. Wait for the final completion message and, for SFC, 100 percent verification.
  • Running SFC before DISM: SFC relies on the component source. Use DISM first so that source is repaired before file verification.
  • Using an unmatched source: installation media must correspond to the installed Windows environment. Check edition, architecture, and release before retrying.
  • Assuming a successful DISM run fixes the trigger: DISM and SFC repair Windows components; they do not identify every application-specific cause of the error.
  • Ignoring the context: an update failure may also need the Get Help troubleshooter, Check Disk, and a clean restart. A software uninstall failure may require repairing or reinstalling that particular application after Windows is healthy.

When to stop troubleshooting yourself

Escalate when DISM repeatedly cannot repair the component store even with a verified matching source, SFC continues to report unrepaired files, Check Disk reports recurring errors, or the same code returns after a successful repair and restart. Also seek help if Windows cannot boot normally, the disk check reports serious problems, or the failed upgrade leaves the system in an incomplete state.
