Is 0x0091366A a virus?
There is no reliable evidence that the code itself is malware. Windows error numbers are not infection verdicts, and an unsolicited web page can display any text it chooses. Treat the message as suspicious if it arrives in a browser pop-up, a phone call you did not request, a full-screen warning, or a demand for immediate payment or remote-control access. Do not call a telephone number shown in that message, install a remote-access program at the caller’s direction, or provide payment details.

Close the browser tab or window using the normal close control. If it will not close, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select the browser in Task Manager, and choose End task. Reopen the browser without restoring the previous page, then use Microsoft’s official support channels if Windows itself continues to report a problem. The number by itself does not establish that a paid repair service is required.
Prepare before changing Windows
DISM and SFC are designed to repair Windows, but preparation prevents a repair attempt from becoming a data-recovery problem.
- Back up documents, photographs, project files, browser exports, and any other irreplaceable data to storage you can access independently of the affected installation.
- Record whether the code occurs at startup, when opening a particular app, during installation or removal, while Windows Update is running, or only on a web page.
- Save unsent work and connect a laptop to AC power. Do not force a shutdown while a repair scan is running.
- Note the Windows edition and whether the computer is Windows 10 or Windows 11. Settings labels differ between those releases.
- If the computer is managed by an employer or school, check with the administrator before changing update services or security settings.
Run Microsoft’s DISM and SFC repair sequence
Microsoft documents DISM followed by SFC as the first built-in sequence for corrupted or missing Windows components. DISM repairs the Windows image that supplies protected files; SFC then checks protected files and replaces damaged copies when a valid replacement is available.

cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. Use Command Prompt rather than a normal, non-elevated window; otherwise the commands may fail with an access error. - Run DISM. At the prompt, enter exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
PressEnter. The/Onlineswitch targets the Windows installation currently running. DISM may obtain replacement components through Windows Update, so keep the computer connected to the internet when possible. Progress can appear to pause for a long time; do not close the window or power off the computer. - Wait for DISM to finish. A successful run normally ends with a message that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not delete files from the Windows folder. Restart, check that Windows Update works, and seek Microsoft guidance for a matching repair source.
- Run System File Checker. In the same administrator window, enter:
sfc /scannow
PressEnterand leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Interrupting SFC can leave the check incomplete. - Restart Windows. Choose Start > Power > Restart. After the restart, repeat the original action once and record whether the code returns.
Understand the SFC result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” SFC found no protected-file corruption. The cause may be an application, an update component, a disk problem, or a misleading browser message rather than system files.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” Restart, retry the action, and keep the result with your notes. If the code returns, continue with the branch that matches the trigger.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.” Run DISM again only if it did not complete successfully, then run SFC once more. If files remain unrepaired, use the CBS log and contact Microsoft support rather than manually replacing or deleting system files.
- The scan cannot run or stops with an error. Confirm that Command Prompt was opened with administrator rights. Note the exact message; a failed scan is a diagnostic clue, not a reason to erase the Windows directory.
Inspect the CBS log when SFC cannot repair files
SFC records repair details in C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. To create a smaller report on the desktop, run this command in the administrator Command Prompt after SFC finishes:

Open sfcdetails.txt and retain it with the date, Windows version, and the exact 0x0091366A trigger. The log helps Microsoft support identify files that could not be repaired. Do not use it as a reason to download replacement DLL files from an unverified website.
If 0x0091366A appears during Windows Update
Update failures can involve the servicing image, update cache, update services, or the storage device. Complete DISM and SFC first, then work through these checks in order.

- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, locate Windows Update, and select Run.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.
Restart after the troubleshooter completes and check for updates again. Microsoft periodically changes Settings labels, so use the Settings search box for “troubleshoot Windows Update” if your build uses different wording.

Clear a stuck update cache carefully
A damaged download can make the same update fail repeatedly. Use an administrator account, pause other work, and follow this reversible procedure:
- Press
Win+R, typeservices.msc, and pressEnter. - Find Windows Update, right-click it, and choose Stop. If it refuses to stop, restart Windows and try again before deleting anything.
- In File Explorer, open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload. Delete the contents of theDownloadfolder, not the parentSoftwareDistributionfolder. Windows will recreate required downloads. - Return to
services.msc, right-click Windows Update, and select Start. - Restart Windows and try Windows Update again.
If an administrator policy prevents these actions, stop and ask the system administrator. Do not rename or delete unrelated folders under C:Windows.
Try a clean restart and check the disk
A background service can interfere with servicing. A clean restart starts Windows with a minimal set of non-Microsoft startup items so you can determine whether the code is caused by a conflict. Use Microsoft’s clean-startup instructions for your Windows release, record which items you disable, and restore the original startup settings after testing.

Because the system volume is in use, Windows may ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y, restart, and allow the scan to finish. Do not interrupt it. If the drive reports repeated errors, back up data and arrange professional or manufacturer support; a disk problem can re-corrupt repaired Windows files.
If the code appears while installing or removing an app
First retry the operation after DISM, SFC, and a restart. If only one application triggers the code, the application’s installer, permissions, or leftover files may be involved rather than Windows as a whole.
- Download the installer again from the software publisher’s official source and confirm that it matches your Windows architecture and release.
- Close the application and related background processes before uninstalling or updating it.
- In Windows 11, check Settings > Apps > Installed apps. In Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Select the affected app and use its available Repair, Reset, or Uninstall option, understanding that Reset can remove the app’s local data.
- Keep at least the free space required by the installer and avoid running two installers simultaneously.
- If the app is essential and its own support team supplies a removal tool, use that tool rather than deleting registry entries by hand.
If every application installation fails, return to the Windows Update and disk checks above. A system-wide failure needs Windows servicing diagnostics, not repeated downloads of one installer.
If it appears at startup or when opening an app
Use Task Manager’s Startup apps list to identify software that launches with Windows. Disable one nonessential item at a time, restart, and test. This is a diagnostic change; it does not uninstall the program. If the code disappears, re-enable items individually to identify the conflict, then update or remove the responsible application through its normal uninstaller.
For a single app, check whether the error occurs under another Windows user account. A clean result in the second account points toward per-user settings or corrupted app data. Do not copy system DLL files from another computer. Preserve the application name, version, crash time, and any Event Viewer details for the publisher or Microsoft support.
When DISM and SFC do not solve the problem
Do not keep repeating scans indefinitely or delete protected files manually. At this point, gather:
- The exact code and message, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Whether it appeared in Windows, an application, Windows Update, or a browser.
- The DISM and SFC final messages and the
sfcdetails.txtreport if SFC could not repair files. - The Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and build shown under Settings > System > About.
- Any chkdsk result and whether the problem affects more than one account or application.
Use Microsoft support with those details. A support technician can determine whether the next step is an update-component repair, a supported recovery option, or hardware diagnostics. Back up data before any recovery operation that could remove applications or personal files.
