Is the code dangerous?
The code alone does not establish that your computer is infected or that hardware is failing. It is an unexplained status value. Safety depends on the surrounding symptoms and on the component named in the message. Preserve the message and logs before changing drivers, uninstalling software, or resetting Windows.
Why the full message matters
Microsoft’s guidance is that system error codes can occur across many locations in the system and require investigation; their descriptions cannot be specific without the runtime context. Record the text around the code, the program or device name, and what you were doing when it appeared. Those details identify the responsible component more reliably than the number alone.
First, capture the evidence
- Copy the complete message. Include the title-bar text, every sentence around
0x0090DEB2, and any named file, service, application, device, or vendor. - Record the trigger. Note the date and time, whether the error happened at sign-in, during startup, when opening a particular program, while connecting hardware, during Windows Update, or during Windows Setup.
- Describe what changed. Write down recent driver installs, application updates, new USB devices, hardware changes, or Windows upgrades.
- Save a screenshot and copy logs. Keep the original wording before dismissing the dialog. If the error repeats, record whether it occurs every time or only under a particular action.

Run Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool
Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool displays the message text associated with a hexadecimal status code. Use it as the first authoritative lookup for the value you recorded.
- Obtain the Microsoft Error Lookup Tool from Microsoft’s official support or developer resources for your Windows edition.
- Open the tool and enter
0x0090DEB2exactly, including the hexadecimal prefix. - Read the returned text and compare it with the original popup. A result that does not match the application’s wording is not proof that the application is wrong; it may be using a private or vendor-defined code.
- Save the returned text with your screenshot and event details. If the tool reports no message, continue with the component-specific checks below.
The lookup result is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Microsoft specifically advises investigating the programmatic and runtime context when a code is ambiguous.
Find the component that generated the code
Check Event Viewer
- Right-click the Start button and select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs and inspect Application and System. If the error occurred during an installation, also inspect the relevant setup or servicing logs shown on that computer.
- Use Filter Current Log… or Find… to search for the time of the popup, the hexadecimal value, the application name, or the device name.
- Open events immediately before and after the failure. Record the Source (event provider), Event ID, level, failing module or driver, and the complete General and Details text.
The provider name often identifies whether the failure belongs to an application, a driver, a device service, Windows Update, or Setup. Keep the surrounding events because a generic error may be preceded by the more useful cause.

Use Reliability Monitor for a repeating application crash
- Press Start and search for View reliability history.
- Open the day marked with a red failure and select the affected application or Windows event.
- Note the faulting application, faulting module, and report details, then compare their timestamp with Event Viewer.
If both tools identify the same program, start with that program’s repair or update rather than changing unrelated Windows settings.

If an application triggers 0x0090DEB2
Repair the application first
- Close the program and restart Windows once to rule out a one-time state.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
- Select the affected application, open Advanced options when available, and choose Repair. This attempts a repair without removing user data where the application supports it.
- If no repair option exists or the error returns, use the application’s own update function or download the current installer from its publisher.
- Only after saving settings and data, uninstall and reinstall the application if its publisher’s instructions support that step.
Do not replace a named application DLL with a file downloaded from an unverified site. A DLL name in an event is evidence for the application’s support team, not a license to copy a random replacement.
Check permissions and security software changes
If the error began after a policy, permission, or security-product change, review that change with the application’s vendor. Avoid disabling protection globally just to make an unknown error disappear; if a test requires a security change, follow the vendor’s documented procedure and restore the setting immediately afterward.

If hardware or a driver is involved
Use this path only when the message, Event Viewer, or the symptom identifies a device, adapter, printer, graphics card, audio device, Bluetooth component, Wi-Fi adapter, USB device, or another hardware-linked service.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device. A yellow warning icon is useful evidence, but its absence does not rule out a driver problem.
- Right-click the device, select Properties, and read Device status on the General tab. Record any device-specific code and the driver provider, date, and version under Driver.
- Use Update driver only with a package intended for the exact model and your Windows edition. Prefer the hardware vendor’s official support channel when Windows cannot find an appropriate driver.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use Roll Back Driver when that button is available and the previous driver is still stored.
- If the driver is damaged or missing, uninstall the device from Device Manager, restart, and install the vendor’s current official package according to the vendor’s instructions. Do not interrupt a firmware or driver installation.
- For an unlisted device-specific code, send the vendor the model, hardware ID, Device Manager status, event provider, event ID, and complete error text.
Device Manager status codes are device-specific. A generic interpretation of 0x0090DEB2 cannot substitute for the device’s own status and driver records.
If the error appears during Windows Update
These steps address a Windows Update symptom; they are not proof that 0x0090DEB2 is an Update-specific code.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, storage, and other peripherals. Leave input devices and the network connection needed for the update.
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot in Windows 10, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter if it is offered.
- Verify that the system drive has sufficient free storage for the pending update. Remove only files you recognize as safe to remove.
- Confirm that Windows Update and its related services have not been disabled by a policy or manual change. If a work or school device is managed, ask the administrator before changing service settings.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt: search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Run
sfc /scannowand wait for verification to reach 100 percent. - Restart and retry the update. If it fails again, save the Update history entry and the surrounding Event Viewer records rather than repeatedly forcing the installation.
If the error appears during Windows Setup or an upgrade
- Back up important files before retrying an upgrade.
- Disconnect nonessential hardware and remove third-party peripherals that are not required for Setup.
- Temporarily use a clean boot to prevent non-Microsoft startup software and services from interfering: open System Configuration, use the Services tab to hide Microsoft services before disabling remaining third-party services, then review the Startup items in Task Manager.
- Retry Setup and note the exact stage at which it fails. Restore normal startup services after testing if the clean boot does not identify the cause.
- Use the Setup or upgrade logs and the event provider shown at the failure time to identify the responsible driver, application, or service. A clean boot is a troubleshooting isolation step, not a specific fix for this hexadecimal value.
Check Windows system files only when the evidence points to Windows
Run system-file repair when the failure is accompanied by Windows component errors, repeated servicing failures, or an update/setup symptom. It is not a universal remedy for an application-defined code.
- Save your work and open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run
sfc /scannow. - Read the final message. If Windows reports that it repaired files, restart and repeat the original action once. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, preserve the CBS and event logs for Microsoft or the device/software vendor rather than deleting system files manually.
What not to do
- Do not assume the code is a virus warning or evidence of infection.
- Do not run a generic registry cleaner or delete registry entries suggested by an anonymous post.
- Do not install a random driver package because its version number appears newer. Match the exact hardware model and Windows edition.
- Do not replace DLLs from download sites or copy them from another PC.
- Do not reset or reinstall Windows before collecting the full message, event provider, event ID, and logs; a reset can erase the evidence and may not repair a vendor component.
- Do not repeat an update or Setup attempt indefinitely without recording what changed between attempts.
When to contact support
Escalate when the Error Lookup Tool has no useful definition, the code returns after the identified component is repaired, or the event provider belongs to software or hardware you cannot safely modify. Send one package of evidence:
- the exact error text and screenshots;
- Windows edition and version (Windows 11 or Windows 10);
- date, time, and action that triggered the failure;
- application, device model, or service named in the message;
- Event Viewer provider, event ID, level, and surrounding events;
- Device Manager status and driver details when hardware is involved; and
- what you already tried and the result of
sfc /scannow, if you ran it.
Contact the publisher or hardware manufacturer named by the provider. If the issue occurs in a managed workplace, give the same package to your administrator. Microsoft documentation specifically recommends vendor investigation for codes that are not listed or that originate outside Windows.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer can still display this code after that date, but the end of support affects update availability and the support path. When practical, discuss a supported Windows 11 upgrade or replacement plan with the device owner or administrator; do not treat an unsupported system as evidence that this particular code has been identified.
