Consequently, the first question is not “Which command fixes this code?” It is “Where did the code appear, and what was running?” A Device Manager status, an application crash dialog, an Event Viewer entry, and a setup program can all require different remedies.
Capture the circumstances before you change anything
Record the details while the message is still visible. This prevents a later repair attempt from destroying the evidence needed by the responsible vendor.
- Copy the complete message. Include punctuation, any filename, module name, secondary number, and buttons or options shown with the code. If text cannot be selected, take a screenshot.
- Note the exact location. Write down whether the message appeared in Device Manager, Event Viewer, Windows Update, an installer, a game, a desktop application, a service notification, or a browser window.
- Identify the triggering action. Record what you had just done: starting an application, connecting a device, installing an update, waking the computer, signing in, or shutting down.
- Write down the owner. Capture the application, game, device, service, or installer name and its version if shown.
- Record Windows information. Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and note whether the system is Windows 10 or Windows 11, together with the edition and build number. - Note repeatability. Record whether the error occurs once, after every restart, only with one account, or only when a particular device or program is used.
Do not uninstall a driver, delete a registry key, reset Windows, or run a cleanup utility merely because the number looks unfamiliar. Those actions can remove useful evidence and may create a second problem.

If Device Manager shows the code
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the affected device. A warning icon can help locate it, but inspect the device named in the message even if no icon is visible.
- Double-click the device, select the General tab, and read Device status. Microsoft documents this inspection path for both Windows 11 and Windows 10.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider, date, and version. Do not assume that an old date or a Microsoft provider proves that this code is a driver error.
- Use Details to record the hardware identifiers if the vendor requests them. Keep the values unchanged when copying them into a support request.
The Device status text is more useful than the hexadecimal value by itself. If the status does not name 0x0090DE6F or does not explain the failure, the code may have been generated by software associated with the device rather than by the standard Device Manager subsystem.
If an application, game, or service displays it
Close the message only after saving its text or taking a screenshot. Reopen the same program and check whether the error is tied to one operation. Look for an in-app log, crash-report option, or support page belonging to that program. Microsoft’s guidance is explicit that third-party error codes must be investigated with the third party that issued them.
Do not substitute a Windows repair command for the application owner’s instructions. A program can use a Windows API and still return its own private error value. If the code appears in Event Viewer
- Press
Win+R, entereventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Open Windows Logs and inspect Application and System. Also inspect Applications and Services Logs if the message names a particular product.
- Sort or filter around the exact time of the error. Open the event immediately before and after the one containing 0x0090DE6F.
- Record the Source, Event ID, Level, timestamp, affected process or service, and the complete text on the General tab. Use Copy so that details are not mistyped.
Event Viewer can show the component that reported an error, but it does not automatically prove that the named component caused the original failure. Compare the event time with the action that produced the popup and keep the surrounding entries for the vendor.

Write down the update or package name, version, and the stage at which setup stopped. An installer’s error value belongs first to the publisher of that package. If setup created a log, preserve it before retrying. A failure that occurs only for one package is evidence against treating 0x0090DE6F as a general Windows error.

- Download
Err_6.4.5.exefrom Microsoft’s official documentation or download location. - Place the executable in a folder that you can open from Command Prompt. Do not rename the file while following the command below.
- Open that folder in File Explorer, click the address bar, type
cmd, and press Enter. This opens Command Prompt in the correct directory. - Run
Err_6.4.5.exe 0x0090DE6F. - Save or copy the output. If the tool reports a matching constant, compare its owning component with the screen where you saw the error; a matching name is a lead, not proof of causation.

For a confirmed device or hardware-related problem
Use the device manufacturer’s current driver and support instructions. Microsoft’s Device Manager guidance recommends the manufacturer route when a code is not listed or when the driver or hardware may be defective.

- Visit the hardware manufacturer’s official support page from another trusted device if the affected network adapter is unusable. Select the exact Windows edition and architecture shown by
winverand Windows Settings. - Download the driver intended for that model and Windows release. Avoid a package for a similar model or a generic download whose ownership is unclear.
- Create a restore point if System Protection is enabled, then close programs that use the device.
- Install the manufacturer package according to its instructions and restart when requested.
- Return to Device Manager and check Device status again. Test the original operation and record whether the message, the device status, or both changed.
If the manufacturer provides no compatible driver, or the status still reports a failure, send the vendor the code, status text, hardware identifiers, Windows build, and the time of failure. Do not repeatedly uninstall and reinstall the device without a recovery plan.
For a confirmed application or game
- Check the publisher’s support page for the exact error text and the application version. Follow instructions that match your release rather than a similarly named product.
- Install the application’s current update only after recording the failing version and preserving logs.
- Test whether the problem occurs in a new Windows user profile or only in one profile, if the publisher recommends that diagnostic. A profile-specific result is useful evidence; it is not a reason to delete the original profile.
- Use the application’s repair or reset option when Windows provides one under Settings > Apps > Installed apps > the application’s menu. Read the warning first because reset can remove local settings or cached data.
- If repair does not help, uninstall only after exporting settings or saved data that the publisher says are portable. Restart, install the current package from the publisher, and test before restoring optional extensions.
Contact the publisher if the same operation still returns 0x0090DE6F. Include the full dialog, version, Windows build, steps to reproduce, and relevant application log rather than reporting only the number.
For a Windows component or service identified by the logs

- Confirm that the package matches your Windows edition, architecture, and device or application model.
- Close other installers and restart Windows so that a pending reboot is completed.
