Error 0x0090D522 has no confirmed Microsoft definition. Microsoft’s published Windows Update and upgrade tables do not identify it, so the hexadecimal value alone cannot tell you whether Windows, an installer, a driver, or a third-party application generated the message. Do not treat it as proof of malware, a registry failure, or a particular driver problem. First record where it appeared and then follow the troubleshooting path for that context.
What error 0x0090D522 means
At present, there is no authoritative Microsoft page that maps 0x0090D522 to one component or one repair. A hexadecimal code is only useful when it is interpreted by the program that issued it. The same-looking message can accompany Windows Update, an operating-system upgrade, an application installer, activation, a normal application crash, or a blue-screen/restart sequence.

Before changing system files, write down the complete dialog text, the application or installer name, the exact time, and what you were doing. Capture a screenshot if possible. Note whether the device still starts normally, whether the problem repeats, and whether you recently installed hardware, a driver, an update, or an application. Those details determine which workflow is safe.
Questions that identify the correct path
- Did the message appear in Settings while downloading or installing a Windows update?
- Did it appear during Windows Setup, an upgrade, activation, or installation of a particular application?
- Was it shown by a named program after that program stopped responding or closed?
- Was it accompanied by a blue or black screen, an unexpected restart, or a boot loop?
- Did a new USB device, graphics card, printer, storage device, or driver precede it?
If a named third-party application displays the code, the vendor that publishes that application is the only party that can define its internal code. Use the vendor’s support channel after preserving the full message and any log it requests.

Do these safe checks before deeper repairs
- Save your work and restart once. A restart can complete a pending update or release a locked file. If the computer is repeatedly restarting or showing a stop screen, skip to the crash and recovery procedure below.
- Disconnect nonessential peripherals. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection attached. Remove recently added USB storage, docks, printers, phones, and other hardware, then test again.
- Check the clock. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time on Windows 10. Turn on automatic time and time-zone settings, select Sync now when available, and retry the operation.
- Confirm network access. Use a stable connection, avoid captive-portal Wi-Fi, and temporarily test another trusted network if downloads fail. Do not disable security software broadly just to test an unexplained code.
- Confirm administrator access. Windows Update and system repair actions may require an account with administrator rights. If this is a work or school computer, an administrator policy may be controlling updates.
- Check free storage. For an operating-system upgrade, Microsoft’s current guidance calls for at least 16 GB free on a 32-bit installation or 20 GB on a 64-bit installation. Keep additional space available for temporary files rather than working at the limit.
If 0x0090D522 appears during Windows Update
Use this path when the code is shown in Windows Update, when Settings reports that an update could not be installed, or when the message appears while Windows downloads a feature or quality update.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends its Update Troubleshooter for update error codes. On Windows 11, open the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app and follow its prompts. On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.
Allow the troubleshooter to apply a suggested correction, restart the computer, and return to Settings > Windows Update (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update (Windows 10). Select Check for updates. Record any new code rather than assuming that 0x0090D522 has been decoded.
2. Check update prerequisites
- Verify that the update package is intended for the installed Windows edition and version.
- Verify that its processor architecture matches the installation, such as 64-bit versus 32-bit.
- Install prerequisite updates first if Microsoft’s package notes require them.
- Use an administrator account and keep the device connected to power during an upgrade.
- Pause or close applications that may lock files, including installers and virtual machines.
3. Clear a damaged Windows Update cache
A failed download can leave partial files in the Windows Update cache. The manual procedure below changes a protected system folder, so create a restore point or a current backup first and use an administrator account. Microsoft cautions that advanced command-line procedures require administrator permissions and comfort with the command line.

- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Stop the update services before changing their files. If a command reports that a service is already stopped, continue.
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. Delete the contents of that folder, not the folder itself. If a file is in use, close File Explorer, confirm the services stopped, and try again. - Return to the elevated terminal and start the services.
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv- Restart Windows and run Windows Update again. The cache will be rebuilt as Windows downloads fresh update files.
If the commands fail because the account lacks permission, stop and contact the device administrator. Do not delete unrelated folders under C:Windows.
4. Update third-party drivers and retry
Microsoft includes current third-party drivers in its general update workflow because an old driver can interfere with installation or the first restart. Open Device Manager, expand categories with recently changed hardware, and check the device manufacturer’s current driver instructions. Prefer drivers intended for your exact Windows version and hardware model. If the code began immediately after a driver change, use the device’s available rollback option or the manufacturer’s documented recovery procedure rather than installing a random package.
5. Retry and inspect the result
After correcting connectivity, time, storage, cache, or driver prerequisites, run Windows Update again and restart when prompted. If the same code returns, record the update name, its version, and the complete text around the code. A repeatable failure tied to one package is actionable; the hexadecimal string by itself is not.
If the code appears during Windows Setup or an upgrade
For an in-place upgrade, confirm the storage requirement before starting: Microsoft lists 16 GB free for a 32-bit operating system and 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system. Check the installed architecture in Settings > System > About on Windows 11 or Settings > System > About on Windows 10, then make sure the installation media or update package matches it.

- Disconnect nonessential peripherals and remove third-party security or system-tuning software only according to its publisher’s uninstall instructions.
- Install pending prerequisite updates while the current Windows installation still boots normally.
- Confirm a stable internet connection if Setup must download files.
- Back up personal files before starting the upgrade.
- Run Setup again as an administrator and note the first stage at which the message appears: download, compatibility check, installation, or first reboot.
If Setup rolls back, do not repeatedly force the upgrade without identifying the stage and preserving the rollback message. The application or Windows Setup log associated with that stage is more useful to Microsoft Support than an isolated code.
If an application displays 0x0090D522
When a named application shows the code after launch or during a task, Windows cannot reliably translate it. Update the application through its official distribution channel, verify that the application supports your Windows version, and check the publisher’s support documentation for the exact complete message. If the problem began after an application update, use the publisher’s documented repair or rollback option.
Collect information for the application vendor
- Application name and exact version.
- Windows edition and version, including whether it is Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- The complete error text, not only the hexadecimal value.
- Steps that reproduce the failure.
- Whether the failure affects every user account or only one.
- Relevant entries from Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application, with personal data removed.
Do not download an alleged “code decoder” or replace DLL files from an unverified site. A DLL name, malware diagnosis, or registry cause has not been established for this code.

A stop screen or restart is a different problem class from a normal update dialog. Microsoft says unexpected restarts can result from hardware, a driver, or software. Use the following sequence and stop when the computer becomes stable.

1. Remove recent hardware
Power down, disconnect hardware added immediately before the problem, and start Windows again. If the device boots normally, reconnect one item at a time to identify the trigger. Avoid opening a desktop case or handling internal components unless you can do so safely and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Start in Safe Mode
If normal startup loops, enter the Windows Recovery Environment. From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Select the Safe Mode option shown on screen. If Windows cannot reach the sign-in screen, interrupting startup may open recovery automatically; use that only as a last resort because repeated forced shutdowns can risk unsaved data.
3. Inspect Device Manager
In Safe Mode or normal Windows, open Device Manager and look for warning icons. For a device installed or updated just before the crash, open its Properties and review the driver details and available rollback or uninstall choices. Reboot after each controlled change so you can tell which action affected the result.
4. Check storage and pending updates
Free space is necessary for Windows to create recovery and paging files. Remove only files you recognize, empty the Recycle Bin, and use Settings > System > Storage to review temporary data. Then install pending Windows and hardware-driver updates once the system is stable.
5. Use recovery options
If crashes continue after removing recent changes, use Troubleshoot > Advanced options in Windows Recovery Environment. System Restore can return system settings and drivers to an earlier restore point without intentionally deleting personal documents. Startup Repair is intended for boot problems. A reset or reinstall is more disruptive and should be considered only after backups and after less destructive recovery options fail.

Use Event Viewer to correlate the timestamp with an application, service, or update. Open Event Viewer, select Windows Logs, and inspect Application and System. Copy the event’s source, event ID, level, and general description; do not publish personal paths, account names, or device serial numbers.
Reliability Monitor can provide a chronological view of application failures and Windows failures. Search the Start menu for View reliability history, select the day of the incident, and expand the failure entry. These records may reveal the failing executable or driver even though they will not automatically define 0x0090D522.

Windows 10 support status matters
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Unsupported Windows 10 devices may no longer receive free Windows Update fixes or security updates. If this error occurs on Windows 10 in 2026, first determine whether the device can move to a supported Windows release under Microsoft’s requirements. If it cannot, the long-term decision is separate from decoding this one message: keep reliable backups, follow the device owner’s security policy, and avoid assuming that a future Windows Update will repair the issue.
What not to do
- Do not label 0x0090D522 a virus or claim that the computer is infected without evidence from a reputable security investigation.
- Do not assume it is a specific Windows Update HRESULT, registry problem, DLL failure, or driver fault.
- Do not promise that System File Checker, DISM, a registry cleaner, or a reinstall will fix this exact code. Those tools address particular conditions and should be chosen only after the failing component is identified.
- Do not replace system DLLs, delete arbitrary registry keys, or download unofficial repair packages.
- Do not keep retrying an upgrade that repeatedly rolls back without recording its stage, package, and logs.

When to escalate
Contact Microsoft Support, the hardware manufacturer, or the application publisher when the code returns after the context-specific steps, when Windows will not boot, when storage or memory errors are suspected, or when the device is managed by an organization. Provide the full message and the evidence you collected. The most useful question is not “What does this hex value mean?” but “Which component issued it, and at what stage did it fail?”
