What error 0x0090D1A3 means
The code is an identifier, not a diagnosis. Microsoft’s published Windows Update, Windows installation and upgrade, stop-code, and activation pages do not map 0x0090D1A3 to a specific component or failure. You should therefore avoid claims that it automatically means Windows Update is broken, that a particular driver is corrupt, or that your PC has a virus.

The same-looking code can be displayed by different setup programs, hardware utilities, activation screens, or applications. The surrounding message, the program that displayed it, and the event that preceded it are more useful than the digits. A screenshot or complete transcription is often the difference between choosing the correct repair and applying an irrelevant one.
Record the evidence before changing Windows
Capture the information below while the message is still visible. If the computer restarts, write down what happened immediately before the restart and photograph the screen with another device if necessary.

- The window title and the name of the program, installer, game, device utility, or Windows setup screen.
- What Windows was doing: downloading updates, installing an update, upgrading to a new release, activating, starting, recovering, or running an ordinary application.
- Your Windows edition and build. Press Windows key + R, type
winver, and press Enter. Record the edition, version, and OS build shown. - Whether Windows still starts normally, starts only in Safe Mode, shows a blue or black screen, or enters a restart loop.
- Recent changes: a Windows update, driver installation, new peripheral, dock, storage device, antivirus product, or other software.
- If an update is involved, the update’s KB number and the time of the failure.
Do not delete logs or uninstall software until this record is complete. The details are needed if the code remains unresolved and you contact Microsoft or the software maker that displayed it.
Choose the troubleshooting path that matches the screen

If your symptoms fit more than one row, start with the event that happens earliest. For example, a setup failure that causes a later restart loop should be treated as a setup problem first.
Fix the code when it appears in Windows Update
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
- Search for the Windows Update troubleshooter and start it.
- Allow the automated checks and apply any repair it offers.
- Restart Windows, even if the troubleshooter does not specifically require it.
- Open Settings, choose Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Microsoft states that its Update Troubleshooter can help when an error code appears while updates are downloading or installing. If the same update fails again, keep the KB number and the exact time for escalation rather than repeatedly retrying without new information.

- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, external drives, docks, and adapters during the update. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection attached.
- Make sure the system drive has adequate free space. A nearly full drive can prevent an update from unpacking and replacing system files.
- Install pending hardware-driver updates through the computer maker or device maker’s official channel.
- If a non-Microsoft antivirus or obsolete system utility was recently installed, consult its removal instructions and preserve the information needed to reinstall it. Do not remove security software blindly if the computer is managed by an employer.
Restart once more and test the update. If Windows Update still reports 0x0090D1A3 but another application is named in the dialog, switch to that application’s support path; the code may not originate in Windows Update itself.
Fix the code during a Windows upgrade or installation
For an upgrade or installation failure, use the following order. Stop if a step identifies a failing disk or hardware component; continuing an upgrade on unstable storage can make recovery harder.

1. Strip the setup down to essential hardware
Shut down the computer and unplug nonessential peripherals, USB hubs, docks, printers, card readers, external storage, and specialized adapters. Leave only the devices required to operate the computer. Retry setup after reconnecting nothing except the network and input devices.
2. Bring Windows and drivers up to date
While the existing Windows installation still boots, install all offered Windows updates and current drivers for storage, chipset, graphics, network, and other essential devices. Use the computer or component manufacturer’s official support channel. A driver that is merely present is not necessarily compatible with the target Windows release.

3. Remove conflicting software temporarily
Uninstall non-Microsoft antivirus products and obsolete utilities that integrate with the file system, network, or boot process. Confirm that you have the installer, license information, and any configuration needed to reinstall them after the upgrade. This is a diagnostic step, not a claim that the software is malicious.
4. Free space and inspect Device Manager
Remove or move large personal files until the system drive has comfortable working space, then empty the Recycle Bin. Open Device Manager and look for warning icons. Resolve devices with an error, disconnect hardware that is not required, and retry setup. Record the device name and status text if a warning remains.
5. Check the system drive
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), approve the User Account Control prompt, and run:

chkdsk /f C:If Windows says the volume is in use, accept scheduling the check for the next restart, reboot, and allow it to finish. Repeated file-system errors, unreadable sectors, or a drive that disappears should be treated as a storage-health problem rather than as a mysterious Windows code.

6. Try a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with Microsoft services and essential startup components while suppressing third-party services that can interfere with setup. Press Windows key + R, enter msconfig, and open System Configuration. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, disable the remaining services, and restart. Retry the upgrade. Re-enable services afterward in groups so that you can identify a conflict; do not leave security controls disabled permanently.
7. Repair the Windows image
From an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for the operation to complete, restart the computer, and run setup again. If DISM reports that it cannot repair the image, save the exact output and include it with your escalation record instead of repeatedly running the same command.
Fix crashes, blue or black screens, and restart loops
Enter Safe Mode when normal startup fails
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If Windows cannot stay running, interrupt startup until the Windows Recovery Environment appears, then choose Troubleshoot, Advanced options, Startup Settings, and Restart. Select Safe Mode. The exact recovery menu can vary by Windows edition and device manufacturer.

If the error disappears in Safe Mode, suspect a recently installed driver, startup service, or third-party utility. Uninstall or roll back the recent change, restart normally, and then install a current driver from the hardware maker if needed.
Check hardware and storage
- Remove newly added hardware and test with the original configuration.
- In Device Manager, inspect warning icons and the device’s status message. Note the device class and driver date before changing anything.
- Ensure the system drive is not almost full. Windows needs working space for paging, updates, and recovery operations.
- Install current Windows updates once the machine is stable enough to do so.
Use recovery options if the loop continues
From Windows Recovery Environment, consider Startup Repair, System Restore, or Uninstall Updates when those options are available and match the timing of the failure. A reset or reinstall can remove applications and personal data, so back up files first and use it only after less destructive options fail.

Confirm the installed edition and build
Press Windows key + R, run winver, and record the edition and version. Activation depends on the installed edition matching the license. An edition change, motherboard replacement, or major hardware change can alter activation status without being a driver failure.
Run Activation troubleshooting
Open Settings, select System, then Activation on Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Settings, choose Update & Security, then Activation. Select Troubleshoot when it is offered and follow the prompts. Record whether the displayed code changes.

When Windows works but one application shows the code
An application-specific dialog is not proof of a Windows Update or activation problem. Write down the application name and version, the action that triggered the error, and whether another Windows account reproduces it. Check that application’s official documentation for an error-specific entry, update the application, and repair or reinstall it only after preserving its settings and data. If the program accesses a particular device, test the device separately and use the hardware-driver branch rather than assuming the application is at fault.
Windows 10 support status matters
Microsoft’s current support pages state that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes through Windows Update for the ordinary Windows 10 support lifecycle. A Windows 10 computer can still boot and run installed software, but an unresolved update error may reflect the platform’s support status rather than a temporary server problem. Record the exact edition and build before deciding whether to repair the installation, move to a supported Windows release, or consult the computer manufacturer.
What not to assume or do
- Do not infer a cause from the hexadecimal format. The code is not a public diagnosis by itself.
- Do not treat it as proof of malware, a failing hard drive, or a bad driver without matching symptoms and evidence.
- Do not install a random driver pack or registry cleaner to “translate” the code. Such software is not a confirmed solution for this unmapped identifier.
- Do not repeatedly force-restart a computer that is writing an update or running a disk check. Interruptions can damage the installation.
- Do not remove antivirus or corporate security controls without confirming the correct procedure and a safe replacement state.
Escalate with a complete record
Because Microsoft’s authoritative pages do not assign a meaning to 0x0090D1A3, escalation quality determines how quickly the originating vendor can identify it. Include the full screenshot or exact text, the date and time, Windows edition and build from winver, the originating application or setup phase, recent hardware and software changes, the update KB number if applicable, and the results of the steps you tried.
For an installation failure, include the setup phase or percentage and relevant setup logs. For a crash or restart loop, include the stop-screen text, Safe Mode behavior, Device Manager warnings, and storage-check results. For activation, include the edition, activation page status, and the Activation troubleshooter result without exposing a product key. This evidence is more useful than reporting the eight-digit code alone.
