One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchError 0x0090580B does not have an identified meaning in the Microsoft Windows 10 or Windows 11 troubleshooting references reviewed for this problem. Do not assume that it points to one known component or cause. Start by recording the complete message and what you were doing when it appeared, then work through the Windows Update checks below if the code appeared during an update or upgrade.
The safest first actions are Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, a reset of the Windows Update cache, and checks for clock synchronization, network access, storage, drivers, and attached hardware. If the code appeared during activation, setup, or another application, use the evidence-gathering steps instead of treating it as a Windows Update error.

What error 0x0090580B means
A hexadecimal code by itself is not enough to identify the failed component. Microsoft’s public Windows 10 and Windows 11 troubleshooting references reviewed for this error do not map 0x0090580B to a documented cause, and an exact-code search did not return an authoritative explanation. That means any page claiming that this code always means a particular corrupted file, malware infection, driver, or hardware fault is going beyond the available evidence.
The surrounding circumstances are more useful than the digits alone. Record the complete dialog text, the button or operation that produced it, your Windows edition and build, and any related Event Viewer entry. The same-looking code could be encountered during Windows Update, a feature upgrade or clean installation, activation, or an unrelated application. Those situations require different troubleshooting paths.

Capture the details before changing Windows
Write down the following information while the message is still visible:
- The complete error message, including any title, secondary code, file name, or suggested action.
- The action that triggered it: checking for updates, downloading an update, installing an update, upgrading Windows, activating Windows, installing software, or running a particular application.
- Your Windows edition, version, and build. Press
Win + R, enterwinver, and select OK. - Whether the computer recently received a driver, hardware, security, or software change.
- Whether the computer has a stable network connection and enough free storage for the operation.
- Relevant entries in Event Viewer recorded at the same time as the error. Open Event Viewer from Start, note the exact time of the failure, and preserve the event details rather than copying only the hexadecimal code.
This record prevents a cache reset from obscuring a problem that was actually caused by setup, activation, or a separate application.
Identify which Windows operation failed
| Trigger | Evidence to capture | Most relevant first branch |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Whether the failure occurred while checking, downloading, or installing; full dialog text; Windows build | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then reset the update cache if necessary |
| Upgrade or installation | Edition and build, available storage, connected hardware, recent driver changes | Check storage, disconnect nonessential hardware, install pending updates, and retry |
| Activation | Complete activation message, Windows edition, and the action immediately before the code appeared | Do not assume the Windows Update cache is involved; preserve the evidence for an activation-specific diagnosis |
| Another application | Application name and version, full message, and Event Viewer entries around the failure | Use the application’s own support path after documenting the Windows context |
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Use this step when the code appeared during Windows Update or a Windows upgrade that was launched through Windows Update. Microsoft lists the built-in troubleshooter as the first-line action for update errors.

Reset the Windows Update cache
If the troubleshooter does not resolve an update-related occurrence, clear the cached update files. Microsoft explains: “Corrupt update files in the cache can cause errors.” This procedure targets the cache; it does not establish what the hexadecimal code means.
- Press
Win + R, enterservices.msc, and select OK. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
- Right-click Windows Update and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open so you can start the service again.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of the
SoftwareDistributionfolder. Delete the contents, not the parentWindowsfolder. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart the computer, open Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
If Windows reports that a file is in use, verify that the Windows Update service is stopped before trying again. If you cannot stop the service, cancel the deletion, restart Windows, and repeat the procedure from the Services step rather than deleting random system files.
Check the conditions that can block an update or upgrade
Synchronize the clock
Open the date and time settings, enable automatic date and time, and synchronize the clock. A substantially incorrect clock can interfere with update communication and validation. After synchronizing, restart the update attempt instead of relying on the failed session.

Verify network access
Confirm that the computer can reach the internet consistently. If the connection drops during checking or downloading, restore a stable connection and run Check for updates again. Record whether the code appears while checking, downloading, or installing; that distinction helps separate a connection problem from a local installation problem.

Check available storage
For an upgrade, Microsoft’s current guidance specifies at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit installation and 20 GB free for a 64-bit installation. These figures apply to the upgrade guidance, not as a universal requirement for every small update. Check the free space on the drive where Windows is installed before retrying.
If local storage is insufficient, Microsoft says a USB drive may be inserted during the upgrade process. A USB drive is installation or recovery media in this context, not a product specifically designed to repair 0x0090580B. Do not disconnect it while Windows is using it for the upgrade.
Update third-party drivers from the hardware maker
Check for pending driver updates from the manufacturer of the relevant hardware. Prioritize hardware that changed shortly before the error, such as storage, graphics, networking, or docking equipment. Use the manufacturer’s official driver package and note the version installed before retrying, so a later failure can be correlated with that change.
Install important pending updates first
When the failure occurs during an upgrade, install important pending updates that Windows can complete successfully before attempting the larger operation again. Restart after those updates and then retry the upgrade from the same supported Windows workflow.

Remove nonessential hardware before an upgrade retry
External devices can complicate an installation or upgrade. Shut down or disconnect equipment that is not required to start Windows, including:
- Printers and scanners
- External speakers or other audio devices
- USB flash drives and other removable storage
- External hard drives
- Docking stations
Leave only the essential keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection attached. Retry the upgrade, then reconnect devices one at a time after Windows completes. If the error returns immediately after one device is reconnected, record that observation; it is useful evidence even though it does not prove that the device caused the original code.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Retry and interpret the result
After running the troubleshooter, resetting the cache, checking storage and time, and removing nonessential hardware, restart Windows and repeat the exact operation that originally failed. Keep the original message and the new result together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- If Windows Update now completes, the cache or one of the environmental conditions may have contributed, but the code still has no independently established Microsoft definition.
- If the same code returns during Windows Update, record whether it appears at the same stage and collect the new Event Viewer entry. Do not repeatedly delete unrelated folders or registry keys.
- If the code appears only during an upgrade or installation, focus the next diagnosis on storage, drivers, and attached hardware rather than assuming a routine update cache problem.
- If it appears during activation or in an application, stop applying Windows Update cache procedures and preserve the operation-specific details for the appropriate support channel.
When the error is not a Windows Update error
The presence of “Windows” in the question does not prove that Windows Update generated the message. An activation dialog, setup program, or third-party application may display a hexadecimal value that Windows’ update tools cannot interpret. For those cases, capture the full text, the program or setup phase, your output from winver, recent changes, and the Event Viewer entries. A support technician needs that context to identify the component that issued the code.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After that date, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended for Windows 10 under Microsoft’s stated support policy. A Windows 10 computer can still display an update or setup error, but the end-of-support date changes what assistance and updates are available. Record the edition and build before deciding whether to continue troubleshooting the existing installation or plan a supported Windows path.
What to send when you need help
If the sequence above does not resolve the problem, provide a compact evidence package instead of only the hexadecimal code:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Full text of the dialog, copied exactly.
- A description of the triggering operation and the stage at which it failed.
- Windows edition, version, and build from
winver. - Whether the Windows Update troubleshooter ran and what it reported.
- Whether the
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributioncache was cleared after stopping the Windows Update service. - Available storage, especially when the failure occurred during an upgrade.
- Recent driver or hardware changes and which external devices were connected.
- Relevant Event Viewer entries with their timestamps.
This information allows the next person helping you to distinguish an update-cache issue from an installation, activation, hardware, or application failure. Without it, the code alone cannot support a reliable diagnosis.
