Capture the event details
- Copy the complete dialog text and title-bar text. Include punctuation and any additional code.
- Record the name and version of the application, installer, or Windows feature that displayed the message.
- Write down what you clicked immediately before the error appeared and whether it happens every time.
- Open Event Viewer by pressing

Fix an update-related occurrence
1. Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft’s first-line workflow for Windows 11 and Windows 10 is the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. It checks common update conditions and applies the repairs that its diagnostic supports.
- Open Get Help and start the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- On Windows 11, you can also reach the documented control through Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
- On Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
- Allow the diagnostic to finish and apply any repair it offers.
- Restart the PC, then open Windows Update and check for updates again.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not resolve the issue, keep its findings with the original error text. They help determine whether the next step should target system files, update components, or a software conflict.
2. Repair the Windows image and system files
When the update failure indicates damaged system components or corruption, Microsoft documents running Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) followed by System File Checker (SFC). Run both from an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt.

- Open Start, search for Terminal or Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. Let the operation finish before starting another command. - After DISM completes, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - When SFC completes, restart Windows and check for updates again.
Do not reverse the order: DISM repairs the component store that SFC relies on. If either command reports an error, preserve the exact text and code rather than assuming that the original 0x0090579F value has been explained.
3. Reset Windows Update components
Microsoft also documents a Windows Update component reset for cases where the update services or their cached data are stuck. Use Microsoft’s current component-reset procedure for your Windows edition rather than copying an unverified script from a forum. The reset targets the update services and cache; it does not establish that 0x0090579F has one universal cause.
After the reset completes, restart the computer and run the Windows Update troubleshooter or check for updates again. 4. Check the system disk
Microsoft lists a file-system check among the documented update repairs. In an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt, run:

Follow the prompt if Windows needs to schedule the check for the next restart. Allow the check to finish, reboot, and retry Windows Update. Keep the result if it reports errors; it is useful evidence when deciding whether the issue is broader than the update service.
5. Use a clean restart to isolate software conflicts
A recently installed program or background service can interfere with updating. Microsoft’s upgrade and update guidance includes a clean restart (also called a clean boot) to start Windows with a reduced set of non-Microsoft services and startup items.
- Use Microsoft’s clean-start instructions for your Windows version and disable nonessential third-party startup items and services as directed.
- Restart and try the same update operation that produced the code.
- If the update works in the clean environment, re-enable items in groups and retry until the conflicting program or service is identified.
- Restore the normal startup configuration after testing if you need those services for everyday use.
A clean restart is a diagnostic, not proof that the original code belongs to a particular vendor. Record which item was disabled and whether re-enabling it reproduces the failure.

Fix an activation-related occurrence
If the message appears while Windows is checking activation rather than downloading an update, use the activation workflow. Open Get Help and run the Windows Activation troubleshooter. Follow its prompts and note the result.

Microsoft states that when an activation code is not listed in its guidance, you should contact customer support with the exact code and context. Provide the full 0x0090579F message, the Windows edition, whether the PC was recently upgraded or had a major hardware change, and the activation troubleshooter’s findings. Do not substitute update resets or registry edits for this branch: they do not establish an activation cause.
Fix an upgrade or installation occurrence
When the code appears during a Windows upgrade or installation, use the general installation-fix sequence rather than assuming it is an ordinary Windows Update error. When the code appears in another application or with a device
If one game, printer utility, installer, or other application displays the code while Windows Update and activation are working normally, treat it as an application-specific failure until evidence shows otherwise. The exact application name, version, action being performed, and event source matter more than the shared numeric format.
- Reproduce the failure once after recording the complete message and time.
- Check the named application’s own log or crash report and compare its event source and ID with Event Viewer.
- Note any application, driver, or hardware change immediately before the first occurrence.

How to interpret the results
The troubleshooter or repair succeeds
Restart and repeat the original action once. Verify that the same update, activation check, or installation now completes. Keep the original event details in case the code returns; a single successful retry does not reveal what the private or mistyped code meant.
The code returns after every documented step
Compare the context before and after each change. A code that appears only in one installer points toward that installer; a code that appears across Windows Update and other system tasks warrants the system-image, system-file, disk, and service evidence you collected. Give support the complete message, event source, event ID, Windows edition, and the steps already attempted.
The message disappears but another error replaces it
Record the new error separately. Repairs can expose the next blocked component, and the replacement code may have a documented meaning even though 0x0090579F does not. Do not merge multiple codes into one diagnosis.
Windows 10 support status in 2026
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, although a Windows 10 PC continues to work. This support status is important when an update-related message appears on Windows 10 in 2026: it does not prove that end of support caused 0x0090579F, and it does mean that a missing post-support update cannot be treated like an ordinary temporary download failure.
