Error 0x00904760 has no confirmed public definition in Microsoft’s documented Windows error references. Treat it as an unidentified hexadecimal status code, not automatically as a driver error, malware warning, or proof that Windows itself is damaged. The safest fix is to preserve the message’s context, decode the value with Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool, and then follow the branch that matches where Windows displayed it.
Do not replace a driver, delete a DLL, edit the registry, or reset Windows solely because this number appeared. The originating application, setup screen, Device Manager entry, event-log record, or stop-code screen determines which repair is appropriate.

What error 0x00904760 means
Windows uses hexadecimal values for many kinds of status and error conditions. A number beginning with 0x can belong to a Win32 API, SetupAPI, driver, installer, or an application’s own error system. The digits alone do not identify the component that generated them.

The code itself is not an executable and does not prove that your computer is infected. It is a piece of diagnostic information. Its practical importance depends on the full text around it, the program that showed it, and what happened immediately before the message.
First, preserve the evidence
Before changing anything, write down the details that can identify the source. A screenshot is useful, but copy the text as well because a single omitted character can change the interpretation.
- The complete message, including any words before or after
0x00904760. - The name and version of the program, installer, or Windows screen that displayed it.
- The date and time, and the action that triggered it.
- Whether you had just installed or removed a driver, connected hardware, run Windows Update, or changed an application.
- Whether the code appeared once, on every launch, during startup, or on a blue stop-code screen.
- If a device is involved, the device category and name shown in Device Manager.
- The Windows edition and build. Windows 10 and Windows 11 use similar diagnostic paths, but the responsible component can differ.
Keep the original screenshot and any setup or event-log entry. If the code later disappears, this record is what allows a software or hardware vendor to reproduce the investigation.
Decode the hexadecimal value with Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool
Microsoft’s documented first step for an unknown hexadecimal status is the Error Lookup Tool. Microsoft describes it this way: “The Microsoft Error Lookup Tool displays the message text that is associated with a hexadecimal status code.” The Microsoft Download Center lists version 6.4.5, published in 2024, as a command-line utility for looking up constants in Windows error headers.

Run the lookup
- Download the Microsoft Error Lookup Tool version 6.4.5 from Microsoft’s Download Center and note the folder where
Err_6.4.5.exeis stored. - Open Command Prompt. If the tool is in another folder, change to that folder first, or provide the executable’s full path.
- Run the value exactly as shown, including the prefix and leading zeroes:
Err_6.4.5.exe 0x00904760 - Read the returned symbolic constant and message. Save the command output with your screenshot and the original application’s text.
Do not shorten the number, remove the 0x prefix, or copy only part of a longer status value. A code embedded in a larger message may have additional qualifiers that matter. If the tool returns a symbolic name, search that name together with the complete message and the application or device that produced it. The symbolic result is a clue about the status family, not permission to replace an arbitrary system file.
What a result can and cannot tell you
A match may indicate that the value belongs to a Windows error header, SetupAPI, a driver-related status family, or another recognized source. It still does not prove which installed component is at fault; the surrounding message and location provide that connection.
An unrecognized result is also useful. It suggests that the value may be application-defined, vendor-specific, newly introduced, or formatted differently from a standard Windows status. In that case, keep the exact text and escalate it rather than trying unrelated repairs.

If Device Manager shows 0x00904760
Use this branch only when the code is attached to a specific device. Microsoft’s Device Manager guidance applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10 and advises contacting the hardware vendor or Microsoft when a code is not listed.

1. Identify the exact device
- Open Device Manager from the Windows power-user menu or by searching for “Device Manager.”
- Expand the category containing the warning icon and record the device’s full name and category.
- Open the device’s Properties and read the status shown on the General tab. Record the manufacturer, hardware identifiers if displayed, and the exact code.
Do not start by downloading a driver for a vaguely similar model. A desktop and notebook can use different revisions of the same device, and a driver intended for another revision can create a second failure.
2. Update only after the device is known
Use the device manufacturer’s official support channel or the driver already supplied for your Windows edition and model. In Device Manager, the driver controls provide an update option. Compare the installed driver with the vendor’s recommended release and note the date and version before changing it.
3. Roll back a recently changed driver
If the message began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s driver properties and use Roll Back Driver when Windows makes that option available. Record the version you return to. A rollback is reversible and is preferable to removing unrelated drivers.
4. Uninstall and reinstall the identified driver
If updating or rolling back does not restore the device, use Device Manager’s uninstall option for that identified device, restart Windows, and install the correct vendor package. Follow the vendor’s instructions about whether the package should be installed before or after reconnecting the hardware. Do not remove a device or driver merely because the hexadecimal value appeared in an unrelated application.

5. Recheck the status
After the restart, open Device Manager again and verify whether the warning icon and status code remain. If the code is still present and is not documented, send the vendor the device name, Windows build, driver version, complete status text, and the steps that reproduce it. Microsoft specifically directs users toward the hardware vendor or Microsoft support for an unlisted Device Manager code.

An application can display a hexadecimal value that is not a standard Windows error. In this situation, Device Manager commands and driver replacement are not evidence-based fixes.
Capture the application’s complete context
- Record the application’s exact name, version, and edition.
- Copy the complete dialog text instead of keeping only the number.
- Note the file, project, account, or operation being processed when the error occurs.
- Save the application’s log and any Windows event-log entry created at the same time.
- Record whether the problem affects one account or every Windows user on the computer.
Run the Error Lookup Tool against the value, but interpret a blank or unfamiliar result as evidence that the application may own the code. Use the application’s official support channel with the complete evidence. A support technician can then match the number to the correct release, plug-in, permission, or service instead of having you alter unrelated Windows components.
For Windows Setup failures
Keep the setup screen, the installation stage, the package name, and the Windows build together. Do not delete installer files or replace DLLs based on the code alone. If the setup program identifies a vendor or product, send that vendor the full text and logs. The same hexadecimal value can have different meanings in different setup packages.
If Windows is restarting or showing a stop-code screen
When the symptom is repeated restarting, a blue screen, or an inability to boot normally, stabilize Windows before investigating the number.
- Remove recently added hardware. Shut down safely and disconnect hardware that was installed immediately before the failures began. Leave essential input and display devices connected.
- Try Safe Mode. Use Windows Recovery to start Safe Mode. If the system remains stable there, record which drivers and startup components are absent in that mode and use the stable session to inspect Device Manager and recent changes.
- Check Device Manager. Look for warning icons, recently changed devices, and the exact status text. Apply the device-specific update or rollback process only after identifying the device.
- Install current Windows updates. From a stable session, check Windows Update and install applicable updates. Restart as requested and note whether the stop-code behavior returns.
- Use System Restore or another recovery option. If the problem persists and a restore point or other recovery option is available, choose the option that can reverse the recent change while preserving the evidence you collected.
Microsoft’s recovery guidance treats these as general troubleshooting actions for recurring stop-code failures. The presence of 0x00904760 does not by itself identify which one will work. If Windows cannot remain stable long enough to collect details, photograph the screen and record the last successful boot and the most recent hardware, driver, or update change.
When the Error Lookup Tool finds nothing
A no-match result does not mean the value is harmless, and it does not justify a system reset. It means the standard Windows headers used by the utility do not provide a usable definition for that input. Check that you typed the complete value exactly as displayed, including leading zeroes and any prefix. Then return to the originating program or device and collect its full message.

- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and build.
- The date and time, steps that reproduce the error, and whether it is intermittent.
- Relevant event-log, setup, application-log, or Device Manager text.
- Recent driver, hardware, update, or application changes.
- Output from

Send that package to the application or hardware vendor responsible for the failing component. A bare hexadecimal value is insufficient to choose a safe component replacement.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming it is a driver error. Use Device Manager troubleshooting only when Device Manager identifies the device.
- Deleting a DLL from System32. The code does not establish that a DLL is missing or corrupt, and deleting one can prevent Windows or applications from starting.
- Editing the registry without a documented key. An unidentified status is not a reason to remove registry entries.
- Running random “code fix” commands. Commands copied from an unrelated error can alter services, permissions, or boot configuration without addressing the source.
- Resetting Windows as the first response. Recovery and reset can be appropriate after evidence-based troubleshooting, but they erase time and may remove applications or settings while leaving an application-defined error unresolved.
- Reporting only the number to support. The complete message, location, build, and recent change are what make the number actionable.
Windows 11 and Windows 10: what is the same
The broad workflow is shared by both versions: capture context, run Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool, inspect Device Manager only for a device-associated code, and use Safe Mode, updates, and recovery options for recurring restart or stop-code failures. Menu wording and the exact recovery screen can differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11, so follow the labels shown on your installation.
The Windows version does not turn 0x00904760 into a known driver or system error. The originating component still controls the fix. Include the edition and build in any support request because vendors may support different driver or application releases on each version.
