- Device Manager window: the affected device and its Device status text are the primary evidence.
- Named application or installer: the product’s version, logs, release notes, and support documentation are more useful than generic Windows repairs.
- Windows dialog with no obvious owner: Event Viewer and a reproducible report can help identify the component.
- Windows Update page: record the update identifier and the full accompanying message; the hexadecimal value alone is insufficient.
Capture the context before changing anything
Write down the evidence while the error is visible. This prevents an application-owned code from being treated as a system failure and gives support staff enough information to reproduce it.
- Copy the complete message, including punctuation, any file name, and any accompanying decimal or hexadecimal value. Take a screenshot if the text cannot be copied.
- Record the window title, application or installer name, and its version. For a device, note the exact device name and category.
- Describe the action immediately before the error: starting an app, installing an update, connecting hardware, waking from sleep, printing, signing in, or another trigger.
- Record the date and time, whether the error repeats after a restart, and whether it appears only for one Windows account.
- Note recent Windows updates, driver installations, application updates, hardware changes, or security-software changes.
- If the message came from a device, copy the text under Device status. If it came from an app, look for a log file or crash-report option before closing the program.
Decode the value with Microsoft Error Lookup Tool
Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool displays the message associated with a hexadecimal status code when that value is present in its database. The Microsoft Download Center lists version 6.4.5, published July 15, 2024. The tool is a lookup utility, not an automatic repair program.
- Download the Error Lookup Tool from Microsoft’s Download Center and extract the archive to a folder you can access, such as
C:ErrorLookup. - Open that folder in File Explorer. Right-click an empty area while holding Shift, then choose Open in Terminal or Open PowerShell window here. You can also open Command Prompt and change to the folder with
cd C:ErrorLookup. - Run the documented command with the exact value:
Err_6.4.5.exe 0x008FA7A4 - Save or copy the returned message. Compare it with the full dialog text and the component that displayed the error; a matching number from a different context does not prove the same cause.
A blank or “not found” result does not prove that the value is invalid. The utility uses a point-in-time database, so a code can be newer, private to a product, or generated by third-party software. In that situation, continue with the source-specific procedure below.

When Device Manager displayed the code
Use the device’s own status information rather than applying a generic registry or system-file fix.
- Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the affected hardware, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Bluetooth, Universal Serial Bus controllers, Printers, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device, choose Properties, and open the General tab.
- Read the complete Device status message and note the device name, manufacturer, driver provider, driver date, and driver version shown on the Driver tab.
- Follow the resolution supplied in Device status if Windows provides one. Restart only after recording the status and driver details.
Microsoft’s Device Manager guidance applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10. If the code is not listed or the displayed resolution does not solve the problem, contact the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support with the device identity, status text, Windows build, and event details. Do not substitute a random driver package merely because the number looks like a driver error.
When a named application or installer displayed it
A third-party service can generate its own hexadecimal values. In this case, the application owns the investigation even if the dialog appeared on a Windows desktop.

Check the application version and logs
Open the program’s About or Help page and record its exact version. Look in its settings for Logs, Diagnostics, or Send feedback. Common locations include a product-specific folder under %ProgramData%, %AppData%, or %LocalAppData%; use the vendor’s documented location rather than deleting files at random.
Reproduce once with a controlled change
Restart Windows, repeat the same action once, and note whether the error occurs at the same step. If the problem began after an application update, check the vendor’s release notes and support advisories before rolling back. If it occurs only with one document, account, plug-in, or project, include that distinction in the support report.
Use the vendor’s support channel
Send the complete message, timestamp, application version, reproduction steps, relevant log excerpt, Windows edition and build, and any Error Lookup Tool output. Avoid posting private account data or license keys in a public forum. The vendor can determine whether 0x008FA7A4 is an internal status, an installer response, or a wrapper around another failure.

When no application or device is identified
Collect Windows event data before attempting repairs that alter drivers or system files.
- Press Windows key + X and choose Event Viewer. You can also search for “Event Viewer” from the Start menu.
- Open Windows Logs, then inspect Application and System. Also check Applications and Services Logs if the dialog names a Windows feature.
- Use Filter Current Log to narrow the time range to the minute when the error appeared. Review entries marked Error or Warning from the same source.
- Open a relevant event and record Source, Event ID, Level, Logged time, and the complete text on the General and Details tabs.
- Right-click the event and select Save Selected Events to create an
.evtxfile for support, or copy the text if file sharing is not possible.
Reproduce the error once after collecting the initial evidence, then compare the new event timestamp with the dialog time. A matching source or executable can reveal which component owns the code. If no owner appears, provide the logs and full message to Microsoft Support instead of guessing at a repair.

There is no evidence that a particular SFC command, DISM command, registry edit, driver replacement, or “registry cleaner” fixes this exact undocumented value. Running broad repairs without identifying the source can remove useful evidence or create a second problem.
- Use a driver procedure only when a device is identified: follow the device’s status instructions and the hardware maker’s current driver guidance.
- Use an application procedure only when an app is identified: update, repair, reset, or reinstall that application according to its documentation, and preserve its logs first.
- Use Windows component repair only with supporting evidence: an Event Viewer entry, a separate Windows integrity message, or Microsoft Support instruction should establish that system files are involved.
- Do not edit the registry to “clear” the hexadecimal value: the number may be an output, not a setting, and deleting keys can prevent Windows or an application from starting.
- Do not download a replacement DLL from an unofficial site: the error does not identify a missing library, and unverified files can introduce security and compatibility risks.
Build a report that can be acted on
If the code continues, assemble one report instead of sending isolated screenshots. Include:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition, version, and OS build (press Windows key + R, enter
winver, and copy the result). - The exact error text and a screenshot showing the window title.
- The application, installer, service, or device name and version or model.
- The date and time, trigger, frequency, and whether a restart changes the behavior.
- Recent Windows updates, application updates, driver changes, or newly connected hardware.
- Error Lookup Tool output, including a not-found result.
- Relevant Event Viewer entries or an exported
.evtxfile, with sensitive information removed.
This information lets support identify ownership of an undocumented code. It also prevents repeated suggestions that cannot be tied to the way the error actually occurs.
How to narrow the cause when hardware or software is involved
Device comparison
For a hardware-related occurrence, compare the vendor’s driver support, the device firmware age, and whether the error follows the device when it is connected to another Windows computer. A failure that follows the hardware points toward the device, firmware, cable, or driver; a failure that stays with one Windows installation points toward that computer’s configuration. These observations are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular component.
Application comparison
For an application-related occurrence, compare the application version, exact reproduction steps, affected account or file, and the vendor’s documented support guidance. Test only one change at a time so you can identify which change affects the result. Keep the original logs and note each test in the report.
