Search results can be misleading because unrelated products sometimes reuse hexadecimal-looking identifiers. A forum post that calls the code an update failure, for example, may describe a different message or an application that happens to use the same number. Match the exact wording, the product name, and the timestamp before applying a proposed fix.
Capture the context before changing Windows
- Copy the complete message. Photograph a blue screen or installation dialog if necessary. Include text above and below the code, not just the number.
- Write down the trigger. Note whether it appeared during startup, after connecting hardware, while installing or removing an app, during Windows Update, or inside a particular program.

If the problem began after adding a USB device, expansion card, memory module, storage drive, dock, printer, or other hardware, shut down completely and disconnect the new device. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, and required power connections attached. If the error stops, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the trigger. Do not open a powered system or remove internal components unless you are qualified to do so.
Use Safe Mode when normal startup is blocked
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. If Windows will not reach that screen, interrupt startup twice by holding the power button during the spinning-logo phase; Windows should enter the recovery environment on the next start.
Networking is not necessary for most diagnosis and loads additional drivers. Use ordinary Safe Mode first unless you specifically need a network connection to download a known driver or contact support.
Check Device Manager
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand categories related to the suspected component and look for a yellow exclamation mark. Open the device’s Properties and read the status on the General tab. For a recently changed device, use Driver > Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise, try Disable device to test whether stability returns, or Uninstall device before restarting so Windows can redetect it. Do not remove unrelated devices merely because they have old dates.

Verify free space
Open Settings > System > Storage and check the system volume. Microsoft describes 10% to 15% free disk space as a useful rule of thumb for operating-system, application, swap-file, and related operations, while noting that exact needs vary by configuration. Free space is a prerequisite for updates and recovery, not proof that it caused this code.
Install pending updates
In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update; in Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Install available updates, restart, and test again. If an update itself triggers the code, note its knowledge-base number and use the Windows Update branch rather than repeatedly forcing the same installation.
Try System Restore when the problem is recent
Search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, and choose a restore point dated before the first occurrence. System Restore changes system files, drivers, and settings but normally leaves personal documents untouched. Review the affected-program list before confirming and keep a current backup.

This comparison is also a way to avoid over-repair. A restart or Safe Mode test is reversible in every branch. A driver rollback changes one component. Resetting an app can erase local settings, while DISM and SFC change servicing and protected-file state; reserve those actions for evidence that supports them.
If it is a startup failure, freeze, or stop error
Check whether Safe Mode is stable
Use the Safe Mode procedure above and leave the computer idle for several minutes, then repeat the action that normally triggers the error. Event Viewer often contains several secondary warnings after a crash. Give priority to the first error at the recorded time and to entries that name the same device or module as the original dialog. Test one suspect driver at a time
If Event Viewer, a crash dump, or Device Manager identifies a recently installed, third-party, or unsigned driver, change only that driver and retest. Avoid driver bundles that install unrelated components.

Use Driver Verifier cautiously
Driver Verifier is an advanced diagnostic tool, not a general repair button. Microsoft warns against verifying every driver at once because doing so can degrade performance or make Windows unusable. Verify only suspicious, recently changed, third-party, or unsigned drivers. If verification causes a boot loop, enter Safe Mode, open an elevated Command Prompt, and run verifier /reset; restart normally afterward. If it appears during Windows Update
Use the built-in checks first
- Restart the computer and disconnect unnecessary USB devices.
- Confirm the system drive has adequate free space and that the system date and time are correct.
- Open the Windows Update page in Settings and run the available troubleshooter.
- Install updates in smaller groups if several are pending, restarting when Windows requests it.
- Review Settings > Windows Update > Update history and record the failed update’s name or knowledge-base number.
Do not assume that the presence of 0x008F3A6F proves a damaged update cache. Use the Windows Update and CBS logs, or a matching event entry, to establish that component-store or system-file corruption is involved before running the command sequence below.

If the app behaves suspiciously or the error occurs with an untrusted installer, run a scan in Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Security scanning complements troubleshooting; it does not prove that this code is malware-related. If the error remains limited to one program, provide the publisher with the complete dialog text, app version, Windows build, and timestamp.

When DISM and SFC are appropriate
Use these commands only when Windows Update logs, CBS logs, or other event evidence indicates component-store or protected system-file corruption. They are not a confirmed 0x008F3A6F-specific fix.
- Right-click Start, choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), and approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Wait for it to finish; interrupting it can leave servicing incomplete. - Restart Windows after DISM reports completion.
- Open an elevated terminal again and run
sfc /scannow. - Restart once more and retry the original action. Record any message saying that files were repaired or could not be repaired.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that servicing uses; SFC checks protected system files against that store. Running SFC first when the store itself is damaged may not resolve the underlying condition, which is why Microsoft’s documented sequence places DISM first. Windows 10 support status matters
