Run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Troubleshoot.
- Open Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any correction the troubleshooter offers and restart the computer when it finishes.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Choose Update & Security, then Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Restart when prompted, then open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check again.
Microsoft describes this troubleshooter as a way to help resolve update error codes. If it reports that it could not repair the problem, keep the report and the original code; do not assume that a second run will identify the unknown code.
Fix 0x008EEB71 during setup or an upgrade
Use this sequence when the failure appears while installing Windows, upgrading an existing installation, or restarting as part of setup. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance groups the remedies below because incompatible devices, drivers, security software, disk problems, and damaged system components can interrupt setup.
1. Disconnect nonessential hardware
Shut down if practical and remove external drives, printers, docks, USB accessories, and other devices that setup does not require. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and the installation media or network connection needed for the upgrade. Reconnect devices one at a time after Windows starts normally so a recurring failure can be associated with a specific device.

2. Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Look for warning icons, unknown devices, or a device that appeared after a recent hardware change.
- For a suspect device, open its properties and review the status. Install an appropriate current driver, or remove the device from the upgrade path if the manufacturer’s instructions require it.
- Restart and retry setup only after recording what you changed.
Do not disable or remove a device you need to boot or connect to the installation unless you know how to restore it.
3. Handle third-party security software carefully
Third-party security software can interfere with an upgrade. Microsoft’s guidance includes removing or disabling it when appropriate, but do this only if you know how to restore protection and have the installer or recovery instructions. Do not leave the computer unprotected longer than necessary, and restart after the upgrade attempt.

4. Check the system disk
Use the drive’s built-in error-checking option before retrying setup: open File Explorer, right-click the Windows drive, choose Properties, open Tools, and use Error checking. Follow Windows’ prompt to scan or schedule a check. If the drive reports errors, back up personal data before making further changes.
5. Perform a clean restart
- Press
Windows+R, typemsconfig, and pressEnter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable the remaining third-party services.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable nonessential startup items.
- Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.
- Run the upgrade again. After testing, return to System Configuration and restore normal startup so disabled services are not left off permanently.
6. Repair the Windows image with DISM
Open Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows Terminal (Admin) and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for the operation to finish, even if progress appears to pause. Restart Windows and retry setup. If the command reports an error, preserve the exact text for escalation rather than repeatedly interrupting it.

Fix 0x008EEB71 after a crash, restart, or blue/black screen
When the code accompanies a sudden restart, stop error, blue screen, or black screen, prioritize stability over another update attempt.

Power down and disconnect hardware added shortly before the problem began. This includes internal components if you can safely return the computer to its previous configuration. If the machine becomes stable, reconnect one item at a time.
Start Windows in Safe Mode
If normal startup fails, hold Shift while selecting Restart from the sign-in or Start menu. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select the Safe Mode option. In Safe Mode, remove or disable a recently changed device driver, record Device Manager warnings, and restart normally to test.
Inspect drivers and devices
In Device Manager, examine devices with warning icons and hardware changed immediately before the crashes. Update a suspect driver using the device manufacturer’s supported package, or disable the device temporarily for diagnosis. If disabling it stops the crashes, keep it disabled only long enough to obtain a compatible driver or replacement.
Maintain adequate free disk space
Check the Windows drive in File Explorer > This PC. Free space is needed for updates, temporary files, paging, and recovery operations. Remove only files you recognize or move personal data to a verified backup; do not delete system folders manually.

Install current updates when Windows is stable
After Safe Mode or a driver change restores normal startup, install available updates through the Windows Update page appropriate to your edition. If the error returns at the same point, stop repeating the update and record the phase and build number.
Use recovery options if crashes continue
From Windows Recovery Environment, options can include Startup Repair, System Restore, uninstalling a recent update, or another recovery method offered for your installation. Choose the least destructive option that matches the timing of the failure. System Restore changes system state; it is not a substitute for a current backup of personal files.

An application-specific appearance does not establish a Windows-wide fault. Record the program name, version, exact action that triggers the code, and whether other programs remain stable. Restart once, install the application’s supported update, and use its built-in repair or reinstall procedure if available. If only that program fails after a recent plug-in, driver, or configuration change, undo that change or contact the application vendor with the complete message and your winver details.
Do not substitute the Windows Update or setup procedures for an app error unless the code also appears in those Windows screens. The absence of a documented mapping means the responsible vendor may need to interpret the application’s own logs.
Windows 10 support changes the update path
Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. In 2026, an update-related appearance of 0x008EEB71 on Windows 10 therefore has a different support boundary from the same symptom on Windows 11. The date does not explain the code or prove that end-of-support caused it; it means that some update-based remedies and assistance are no longer available under the former policy.
Check your edition and build with winver. If you plan to move to Windows 11, verify hardware compatibility and licensing requirements first, back up personal files, and use Microsoft’s official Windows 11 Installation Assistant or installation media rather than an unverified image. An upgrade or reinstall can change applications and system state, so treat it as a recovery decision, not a first-line fix for an unidentified code.
If Windows will not boot or the normal fixes fail
- Enter Windows Recovery Environment through Shift+Restart, an installation USB, or the recovery screen shown after failed starts.
- Try the least destructive available option, such as Startup Repair, System Restore, or uninstalling a recent update.
- Before Reset this PC or a reinstall, copy personal files to a separate, verified backup whenever the drive is accessible.
- Use installation media only after checking edition, compatibility, and licensing requirements. Keep the complete error message and the steps that led to the failure.
A reset or reinstall may remove applications and can remove personal files depending on the option selected. If the drive is failing or data is irreplaceable, stop and obtain professional data-recovery advice before proceeding.
Is 0x008EEB71 a virus or a hardware problem?
The code alone cannot answer either question. No authoritative Windows source cited for this error identifies it as malware, and the code is not enough to diagnose a defective component. Hardware or driver involvement becomes more plausible when the problem began immediately after adding a device, appears with crashes or restarts, or disappears in Safe Mode. An update or setup context points first toward the corresponding Windows troubleshooting path.

If the message arrived in a browser pop-up, from an unknown program, or alongside suspicious behavior, do not call a phone number or install a downloader presented by that message. Close it and use the security software you already trust. That precaution is separate from identifying the Windows error; a hexadecimal code is not proof that the computer is infected.
What to send when you escalate
Contact Microsoft Support for a Windows Update, setup, boot, or system failure, or contact the application vendor when only one program reports it. Include:
- The full message and a screenshot.
- The exact screen, application, or setup percentage where it appeared.
- Your Windows edition, version, and build from
winver. - Whether Windows still boots and whether Safe Mode changes the behavior.
- Recent driver, hardware, security-software, or update changes.
- Relevant Event Viewer details or setup-log information, including timestamps and surrounding errors.
- Every repair step already attempted and its result.
This evidence lets the responsible support team map the event to a component or log entry instead of guessing from 0x008EEB71 alone.
