Error 0x008D35C6 has no confirmed definition in the Microsoft references reviewed for Windows 11 or Windows 10. The hexadecimal value alone does not identify a driver, hardware part, malware family, activation problem, or Windows Update component. The reliable way to fix it is to identify exactly when the message appears—during Windows Update, an upgrade or installation, or a crash/restart—and then follow the matching repair path.
Most cases can be investigated without reinstalling Windows. Back up personal files before changing update components, checking the disk, or using recovery tools. A USB flash drive for Windows backup is a practical option if Windows still starts normally.

Start by identifying the context
Write down the complete message, not only the hexadecimal code. Note whether it appeared while downloading or installing an update, during a Windows 11 or Windows 10 upgrade, while installing an application or device, or immediately before a blue or black screen and restart. Also record the Windows edition and build, the application or device involved, and any driver filename shown on screen.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Because no authoritative Microsoft page assigns 0x008D35C6 to a specific component, applying a driver fix to an update failure—or changing the registry because the value looks familiar—can make diagnosis harder. Back up before repair
Copy documents, photos, browser data, and other irreplaceable files to another drive or a USB flash drive before running repair commands. Microsoft Support guidance published in 2026 specifically notes that an inserted USB drive can be used to copy files. If Windows will not stay running long enough, start in Safe Mode and copy the files there, or use another computer to access the drive only after you have confirmed what data must be preserved.
Do not overwrite the only copy of a file while experimenting with recovery. Keep the backup disconnected when it is not being used so a later system failure cannot affect both copies.
If 0x008D35C6 appears during Windows Update
Use an administrator account for the command-line steps. The sequence below follows Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting order: run the built-in troubleshooter first, reset update caches if necessary, check the file system, repair the Windows image, and then retry the update.

- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. In Windows 11, open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run. In Windows 10, open Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and run it. Apply any repair it recommends, restart, and try the update again.
- Reset the Windows Update folders if the error returns. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Stop the services that hold the update files:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
net stop msiserver
Rename the two caches rather than deleting them, so they can be restored if needed:
ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:WindowsSystem32catroot2 catroot2.old
Start the services again:
net start wuauserv
net start bits
net start cryptsvc
net start msiserver
If a command reports that a service is not running, continue with the remaining stop commands. If a rename reports that a file is in use, check that the related services actually stopped, close Settings, and run the command window as administrator. Windows creates fresh cache folders after the next update check.
- Check the system disk. In the same elevated window, run
chkdsk /f C:. Windows may say the volume is in use and offer to schedule the check for the next restart; typeY, restart, and let the check finish. Do not power off while the disk check is running. - Repair the Windows component store. After Windows starts, open an elevated terminal and run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. Wait for it to complete even if progress appears paused. Then runsfc /scannow. DISM repairs the image that supplies system files; System File Checker checks and replaces corrupted protected files using that repaired image. - Restart and retry once. Open Settings → Windows Update, select Check for updates, and record whether the same code appears. If another error code replaces 0x008D35C6, preserve both codes; the new one may identify a more specific failure.
Update-specific checks that prevent false leads
- Keep the computer connected to reliable power during the update. A laptop should remain plugged in.
- Disconnect nonessential USB storage and other accessories while the update runs, but keep the backup drive available only until your files are safely copied.
- Check that the system drive has usable free space. If Windows reports a storage shortage, remove or move personal files before retrying; do not delete folders inside
C:Windowsmanually. - Pause third-party system-tuning or security software only when its own documentation permits it, and re-enable protection immediately after the test. The code itself does not prove that security software is responsible.
If the message appears during an upgrade or installation
An upgrade failure is different from a routine monthly update. Microsoft’s installation guidance starts with reducing hardware and permission conflicts, then using the troubleshooter and the applicable error table if setup displays another code.

- Back up first. Do not begin an upgrade that could change boot or recovery partitions until personal files are copied.
- Unplug nonessential hardware. Remove external drives, printers, cameras, USB hubs, and other accessories that are not required for setup. If you are using a laptop dock, undock the laptop. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and installation media or device that setup requires.
- Check permissions. Sign in with an account that has administrator rights. If setup is launched from removable media or a downloaded installer, confirm that the account can read the source and write to the destination drive. Do not bypass Windows security prompts by granting broad permissions to system folders.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Use the Windows 11 or Windows 10 path listed above, restart, and retry setup.
- Capture any replacement code. If setup shows a different hexadecimal or decimal error, save the complete text and use the relevant Microsoft error table for that code. A second code is more useful than repeatedly searching for 0x008D35C6 alone.
- Retry with a minimal configuration. Close applications, disconnect unnecessary hardware, and leave the computer on reliable power. If setup fails at the same stage, note the percentage or screen name; that timing helps distinguish a download, compatibility, driver, or migration problem.
A clean installation is a later recovery option, not the first response to this undocumented value. It removes applications and can remove files or partitions, so use it only after backups and after less destructive recovery options have been considered.
If it appears with a blue screen, black screen, freeze, or restart
When the code accompanies a stop error or an unexpected restart, treat it as a stability problem rather than assuming it is an update code. Microsoft Learn’s general stop-error analysis—not an analysis of 0x008D35C6 specifically—attributes 70% to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware issues, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% to unknown causes. Those percentages are broad estimates for stop errors and cannot identify the cause of this particular value.
| General stop-error category | Share reported by Microsoft Learn (2026) | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party driver code | 70% | A reason to inspect recently changed or warning-marked devices, not proof that a driver caused this error |
| Hardware issues | 10% | Check newly added hardware and physical stability when symptoms point that way |
| Microsoft code | 5% | Keep Windows updated and preserve crash details |
| Unknown causes | 15% | Some stop errors remain unresolved without additional dump or event data |
- Enter Safe Mode. Open Settings → System → Recovery → Advanced startup → Restart now in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings → Update & Security → Recovery and choose Restart now under Advanced startup. Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart, then choose Safe Mode. If Windows cannot reach Settings, interrupt startup twice to enter the Windows Recovery Environment, then use the same menu.
- Remove newly added hardware. Shut down, disconnect a recently installed adapter, storage device, dock, or other component, and test whether normal startup returns. Do not open a powered computer or remove internal components unless you are qualified to do so.
- Inspect Device Manager. In Safe Mode or normal Windows, right-click Start and open Device Manager. Look for warning icons, recently changed devices, and entries that disappeared after the failure. Open a device’s Properties to read its status and driver details. Update the device through a trusted, official channel, or temporarily disable the suspect device to test whether stability returns. Do not uninstall a critical storage or boot device without a recovery plan.
- Check free space. Keep roughly 10–15% of the system drive free. Windows needs working space for paging, updates, logs, and recovery operations; a nearly full disk can turn an unrelated fault into a restart loop.
- Install current Windows and driver updates. Once the system is stable enough, apply pending Windows updates. For a device implicated by Device Manager, obtain the current driver from the device or computer manufacturer’s official support channel. The hexadecimal value by itself does not justify choosing a particular driver.
- Use recovery options if the fault persists. From Windows Recovery Environment, try System Restore when a restore point predates the problem. Other available recovery options may include uninstalling a recent update or using startup repair. Read each option’s warning about applications and files before confirming it.
Collect evidence before changing more settings
If the first branch does not resolve the failure, preserve information while the message is still reproducible. Take a photograph or screenshot of the complete dialog and write down the date, time, action that triggered it, and whether the computer restarted. Record the Windows edition and build from Settings → System → About in Windows 11 or Settings → System → About in Windows 10.

Open Event Viewer by right-clicking Start and choosing it, then inspect Windows Logs → System and Windows Logs → Application around the time of the failure. Look for entries that name a device, service, application, or driver. Copy the event source, event ID, and descriptive text; do not infer a cause from an isolated warning that occurred hours earlier.
For a crash, also note any stop-screen text, named .sys file, dump-file reference, or automatic-restart behavior. This information can distinguish a third-party driver from an update transaction or an application crash. If the error appears only in one application, repair or reinstall that application through its official installer after confirming that Windows itself is stable.
What 0x008D35C6 does not establish
- It is not documented in the searched Microsoft references as a specific Windows component or public error meaning.
- It is not evidence of malware, an activation failure, a defective graphics card, or a particular driver.
- It is not a reason to edit the registry, delete arbitrary system folders, or download a file that claims to decode the number.
- It is not a guarantee that one repair command will solve the problem. A successful DISM or SFC run only reports the condition of the image and protected files checked by that command.
Be especially cautious with pages that promise a single downloadable fix based only on the hexadecimal value. Without the triggering context and complete message, such a download can install the wrong software or obscure the original evidence.

When a reinstall is justified
Try the context-appropriate manual steps first. Consider a reset or clean installation only when Windows remains unusable, recovery options fail, system files cannot be repaired, or setup repeatedly fails after hardware and permission conflicts have been removed. A clean installation can erase applications and personal data, so verify the backup, locate installation media and account credentials, and make sure you have official drivers for network and storage devices before proceeding.
If the computer still starts, create and test recovery media before wiping anything. If it does not start, copy personal files from the recovery environment or another system first. Keep the original error message and event details; they may be needed after reinstalling if the same hardware or driver fault returns.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Update screen: troubleshooter → reset SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 →
chkdsk /f C:→ DISM → SFC → restart and retry. - Upgrade or installation: backup → unplug nonessential devices and undock → verify administrator permissions → troubleshooter → use the table for any new setup code.
- Crash or restart: Safe Mode → remove new hardware → inspect Device Manager → maintain 10–15% free space → update Windows and the suspect driver → use recovery options.
- No clear context: capture the full message, trigger, build, event entries, and named driver or application before selecting a branch.
