Error 0x008D3493 has no confirmed Microsoft definition in the available Windows 10 or Windows 11 references. Treat it as an unidentified status value until you know where it appeared and what the complete message said. The same-looking hexadecimal value can be produced by an application, installer, device driver, or a Windows crash, and each source requires a different fix.
Do not start with a registry cleaner, a generic driver pack, or a replacement hardware purchase. First preserve the error context, test the value with Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool, and then follow the branch that matches the originating program, device, or crash screen.

What error 0x008D3493 means
Microsoft’s published Windows system-error references do not map 0x008D3493 to a named Windows 10 or Windows 11 condition. That does not prove the value is fake. It means Windows’ general documentation does not identify this exact number, so the hexadecimal value alone is insufficient for diagnosis.
Microsoft explains that system error codes can arise in many parts of the operating system and require investigation in context. A third-party application, hardware installer, device driver, or setup program may also display its own status values. The originating component is therefore more useful than the number by itself.

The code is not, by itself, evidence of malware, a failing hard drive, or a bad driver. It is also not proof that a recent Windows update caused the problem. Those possibilities can be assessed only after you establish where the message appeared and what changed immediately beforehand.
First, preserve the circumstances
Before closing the dialog or restarting, write down the details that distinguish one error source from another. Take a screenshot if possible, but also transcribe the text because a screenshot may not preserve enough context for later support.
- The complete wording around
0x008D3493, including any file name, application name, device name, or second code. - Where it appeared: an application window, an installer, Device Manager, a blue or black crash screen, or a message after Windows restarted.
- The exact time and what you were doing when it appeared.
- Whether Windows still starts normally and whether the message returns after a clean restart.
- Hardware, drivers, Windows updates, applications, or security software added or changed shortly before the first occurrence.
- Whether the problem is repeatable and which action makes it return.
This record prevents you from applying a driver remedy to an application error or a recovery procedure to a one-time installer message. It also gives a hardware vendor or Microsoft Support enough information to investigate an unlisted code.
Decode the hexadecimal value with Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool
Microsoft documents the Error Lookup Tool as a digitally signed utility that displays message text associated with hexadecimal status codes. Its documentation was updated on July 14, 2025. Use it as a lookup aid, not as a diagnosis that overrides the program or device that displayed the message.
Run the lookup
- Obtain the Error Lookup Tool from Microsoft’s official documentation and place the executable in a folder you can access from a Command Prompt.
- Open Command Prompt and change to that folder, or use the full path to the executable.
- Run the documented command pattern, substituting the value you recorded:
Err_6.4.5.exe 0x008D3493 - Record the message returned, including whether the tool reports that the value is unknown.
- Compare that text with the original application’s or device’s message. If the wording does not match, keep both records; the originating program may be using a private status value.
A returned description is not a guaranteed explanation for the failure. The same status can have different practical consequences depending on whether it was emitted during installation, device initialization, or application execution. If the lookup produces no text, continue with the context-specific branches below rather than trying random repairs.

Choose the branch that matches where the code appeared
| Where you saw 0x008D3493 | Start with | Escalate to |
|---|---|---|
| Device Manager device status | Inspect the device Properties page and its listed status code; follow the resolution for that specific code. | The hardware vendor or Microsoft Support if the code is not listed. |
| Repeated crash, blue screen, black screen, or automatic restart | Remove newly added hardware, start Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, check free disk space, and install current Windows updates. | System Restore or another Windows recovery option if normal startup remains unreliable. |
| Application window | Identify the application and preserve its complete message, then check whether the error reproduces after a clean restart and after the application or Windows is updated. | The application’s publisher when the code is private or undocumented. |
| Installer or setup program | Record the product, version, and installation stage; determine whether the failure began after a hardware, driver, or Windows change. | The software publisher or Microsoft when Windows setup itself is involved. |
If Device Manager shows the code
Use this branch only when the message is attached to a device in Device Manager. A code shown in an ordinary application dialog is not automatically a Device Manager code.
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand the device category that contains the warning icon. Categories include display adapters, network adapters, sound devices, storage controllers, USB controllers, and other hardware.
- Double-click the affected device.
- Open the General tab and read the Device status box. Microsoft instructs you to use the code shown there, not merely a number copied from another dialog.
- Record the device’s exact name and the status text. If Windows lists a specific resolution for that status code, apply that procedure and restart when instructed.
If Device Manager does not list 0x008D3493, do not substitute a generic driver package or remove registry entries. Microsoft directs users with an unlisted hardware code to the device vendor’s technical support or Microsoft Support. Give them the device model, Windows edition, status text, and the changes that preceded the failure.

Check whether the device is actually the trigger
After documenting the status, determine whether the error returns when the device is enabled or used. If the computer works normally with the device disconnected and the problem began after that device or its driver was added, include those facts in the support case. Do not buy replacement hardware solely because this hexadecimal value appears; the code has no confirmed hardware meaning.
If the code accompanies crashes or restarts
For repeated stop-code events, blue or black screens, or automatic restarts, use Microsoft’s basic recovery sequence. The purpose is to separate a newly introduced component from a Windows installation that needs repair.
1. Remove newly added hardware
Shut down the computer and disconnect hardware added shortly before the first crash, such as a USB accessory, expansion card, external storage device, or replacement component. Reconnect one item at a time only after the system has been stable. If the machine cannot remain powered on, skip to Safe Mode and document which hardware was removed.

2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If Windows is stable there but crashes during a normal start, the contrast is useful evidence that a startup component, driver, or recently installed software change needs attention.
From Windows, open Settings > System > Recovery (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery (Windows 10), choose Advanced startup, select Restart now, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. At the Startup Settings screen, choose the Safe Mode option. If Windows cannot reach Settings, interrupt startup as it begins several times to enter the Windows Recovery Environment, then use the same Troubleshoot path.
Record whether the code appears in Safe Mode. Do not assume that Safe Mode itself fixes the underlying issue; it is a diagnostic comparison.
3. Inspect Device Manager from Safe Mode or normal mode
Look for warning icons, recently changed devices, and hardware that disappears or reappears between normal mode and Safe Mode. Capture the device name and its Device status text before changing anything. If the status code is not documented, contact the vendor or Microsoft rather than installing an unverified driver bundle.
4. Verify free disk space
Open Settings > System > Storage in Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage in Windows 10 and check the system drive. A nearly full system volume can interfere with updates, temporary files, and recovery operations. Free space carefully by removing files you recognize or moving personal data; do not delete system folders just to make room.

5. Install current Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update (Windows 10), select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart. Note the update date and whether the error returns. If the first occurrence followed an update, record that timeline instead of concluding that the update is necessarily the cause.
6. Use recovery when normal startup remains unstable
If crashes continue after hardware removal, Safe Mode testing, Device Manager inspection, disk-space checks, and updates, use System Restore or another option in the Windows Recovery Environment. Choose a restore point from before the first occurrence when one exists, and back up important personal files before recovery operations. Recovery options can change installed software and settings, so read each confirmation screen.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If an application displays the message
An application dialog is evidence that the application, one of its components, or the operation it attempted produced the value. Windows’ generic error-code list cannot identify a private code that the application publisher has not documented.
- Write down the application’s exact name and version, the action that triggered the message, and any file or module named in the dialog.
- Close the application, restart Windows normally, and repeat the same action once. Note whether the message is reproducible.
- Check Windows Update and the application’s own update mechanism for current versions. Record whether the issue began immediately after an application or Windows change.
- If the application has a documented repair or reset option, use that option only after saving the application’s data and settings as appropriate.
- Send the complete wording, lookup result, application version, Windows edition, and reproduction steps to the application’s publisher when the code remains private or unknown.
A one-time dialog that does not return after a restart is different from a reproducible failure. Keep the record even when the symptom disappears; it can help if the error returns after a later update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf an installer or update setup shows the code
Capture the product name, version, installation phase, and whether the failure occurred before or after a restart. Also record free disk space and recently added hardware or drivers. These details identify whether the setup program, Windows servicing, or a device initialization step produced the value.
Best Value
Do not repeatedly rerun an installer while changing several variables at once. Restart normally, verify Windows Update status, and retry only after recording the result of the previous attempt. If the same installer fails with the same complete message, give that record to the software publisher. If Windows itself cannot complete an update and begins restarting repeatedly, return to the crash/restart branch and use Safe Mode and recovery options.
Why the code may appear after an update or restart
An update or restart changes the order in which drivers, services, devices, and applications initialize. The timing can expose an existing incompatibility without proving that the update created it. Compare the first occurrence with your change log: Windows update history, newly installed applications, driver changes, and hardware additions.
Use Safe Mode to see whether the symptom depends on normal startup components, and use Device Manager to check devices that report a status problem. If the code appears only in one application after a restart, treat it as an application-context issue rather than a universal Windows code.

Fixes to avoid until the source is known
- Registry cleaners: There is no confirmed registry meaning for
0x008D3493, so deleting entries based on the number can remove unrelated configuration. - Generic driver packs: They can install an incorrect driver and make a device problem harder to diagnose. Identify the exact device and use its documented support path.
- Unnecessary hardware purchases: The code does not establish that a component has failed.
- Repeated forced shutdowns: They can interrupt updates or recovery. Use Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment when normal startup is unreliable.
When and how to escalate
Contact the hardware vendor when Device Manager shows an unlisted status code or the device model is clearly implicated. Contact the application publisher when the value appears only in that program. Contact Microsoft Support when the code accompanies Windows startup, update, or recovery failures and the documented steps do not restore stable operation.
Include the complete message, the exact hexadecimal value, Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition, build if visible, device or application name, date and time, recent changes, lookup output, Safe Mode result, and every step already attempted. Microsoft specifically advises contacting the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support when a Device Manager code is not listed.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Save the complete message and identify where it appeared.
- Run
Err_6.4.5.exe 0x008D3493and record the returned text. - If Device Manager is involved, read the affected device’s Device status code and follow that code’s documented resolution.
- If crashes or restarts recur, remove newly added hardware, test Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, check free disk space, and install current Windows updates.
- Use System Restore or another recovery option when normal startup remains unreliable.
- Escalate an unlisted or application-specific code with your complete evidence rather than applying an unrelated cleaner, driver pack, or hardware replacement.
