What error 0x008CE464 means—and what it does not tell you
Microsoft’s published support and activation material does not provide a definition for the exact string 0x008CE464 (or 008CE464). No authoritative Windows, vendor, or indexed community result establishes which component generated it. That means there is no verified, code-specific command or registry edit that can be called a universal fix.

A hexadecimal number can be displayed by Windows, an installer, an activation service, a device driver, or a third-party application. The surrounding words and the action that triggered the message are more useful than the number by itself. A message during an update needs a different remedy from one shown in Settings > Activation, and both differ from a message followed by a reboot.

Record the evidence before troubleshooting
Write down or photograph the entire message before closing it. Include:
- The exact text around
0x008CE464, including any file name, product name, or second code. - The application, Settings page, or installer window displaying it.
- What you were doing: starting Windows, installing an update, activating Windows, launching an app, connecting hardware, or recovering from a crash.
- Whether the symptom is a failed operation, a warning, a blue or black screen, an automatic restart, or a repeating restart loop.
- Your Windows edition and build. Press
Windows key + R, enterwinver, and press Enter. - Recent changes such as a new peripheral, driver, application, Windows update, or hardware upgrade.
- The date and time of the event and any related entry in Event Viewer.

Fix 0x008CE464 during Windows Update or installation
Choose this section when the code appears while downloading, installing, or upgrading Windows, or when setup reports that it cannot continue. Microsoft’s update guidance applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10, although Windows 10’s support status affects what updates and assistance are available.
1. Disconnect nonessential external hardware
Shut down the computer and unplug external drives, USB hubs, printers, cameras, docking stations, and other devices that are not required to complete the update. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and any hardware needed to boot. Reconnect devices one at a time after the update succeeds. This removes a common source of setup conflicts without changing drivers or system files.

2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open the Get Help app from Start, search for the Windows Update troubleshooter, and run the automated diagnostic. Follow its prompts, allow it to apply a proposed correction, and restart when requested. Microsoft recommends starting with this automated path on Windows 11.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter. On Windows 11, the equivalent manual location is Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run when that entry is available. The Get Help workflow remains the preferred automated starting point for Windows 11.

3. Check permissions and retry
Sign in with an account that has administrator rights, especially if the computer is shared or managed by an organization. If a work or school policy controls updates, the administrator may need to approve the operation. Close applications that are installing software, then restart Windows and try the update again from the same Settings page. Do not interrupt the installation once the restart phase begins.
4. Separate an update failure from a setup failure
If the message appears in Windows Update, record the update’s name or knowledge-base number and the time of failure. If it appears in an upgrade or application installer, record the installer name and version as well. The identical hexadecimal text can be displayed by different components, so the installer’s own log or support team may be more relevant than a generic Windows remedy.
5. If the troubleshooter cannot resolve it
Restart once, reconnect only the hardware you need, and retry. If the same dialog returns, stop repeating the installation and preserve the evidence you recorded. A code that is not documented cannot safely justify registry changes, random file replacement, or a driver-cleaning utility. Give Microsoft or the installer vendor the complete text, Windows edition and build, the failed action, recent changes, and relevant Event Viewer entries.

Fix 0x008CE464 in a Windows activation dialog
Use this path only when the message appears in an activation page or alongside a license warning. An activation code and an update code can look similar, so confirm the location first.

Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. Record the edition (for example, Home or Pro), version, and build shown in the About Windows dialog. An edition mismatch can matter when support examines the case, even though the undocumented hexadecimal value does not identify the mismatch by itself.
2. Open the activation page
In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Activation. In Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation. Capture the complete status message and any additional code shown there.
3. Run the Activation troubleshooter
Select Troubleshoot on the activation page when it is offered, then follow the on-screen checks. Allow the troubleshooter to finish before restarting or changing a product key. If it reports a different, documented code, use the instructions for that code rather than assuming that 0x008CE464 is the underlying cause.
4. Compare the code with Microsoft’s published list
Compare the complete activation code and message with Microsoft’s current activation-error list. The exact string in this article is not established in that list. Microsoft’s activation guidance says: “If you’re getting an error code that isn’t listed on this page, contact customer support.” Therefore, an unlisted 0x008CE464 should be escalated with the screenshot, winver result, edition, activation page text, and the action that preceded it.

Fix 0x008CE464 when Windows crashes or restarts
Choose this section when the code appears immediately before a reboot, after a blue or black screen, or during a repeating restart cycle. Microsoft says unexpected restarts can be caused by hardware, drivers, or software. It also notes that, in many cases, Windows 11 resumes normally after the restart; persistent repetitions require further diagnosis.
1. Remove recent hardware
Power off the PC and disconnect hardware added shortly before the problem began. Remove one change at a time so you can identify a correlation. If the system stabilizes, leave the device disconnected while you install current Windows updates and obtain the device maker’s documented support instructions.
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
- From the sign-in screen or Start menu, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
If the crash does not occur in Safe Mode, a recently loaded driver, service, or startup application becomes more likely. Record what works in Safe Mode and remove or roll back only a clearly identified recent change. If the same failure occurs there, proceed to recovery diagnostics rather than repeatedly rebooting.
3. Inspect Device Manager
Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager. Expand the categories and look for a warning icon or a device that appeared after the recent hardware change. Record the device name and status message. Do not install an unverified driver package or use a driver-cleaning program merely because the hexadecimal code is present; identify the device and use the manufacturer’s documented driver or Windows Update path.

4. Check storage and install current updates
Open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10 to review available space. Free enough space for the pending update and normal recovery operations, then install current Windows updates if the system can remain stable. A nearly full system drive can prevent updates and recovery actions from completing, but it does not prove that storage caused this particular code.
5. Use Windows recovery options if the loop continues
From the Windows Recovery Environment, try Startup Repair when Windows cannot boot normally. If the problem began after a clearly identifiable change and a restore point exists, System Restore may return system files and settings to an earlier state without selecting personal files for deletion. Reset this PC is a later option; read whether the selected reset keeps or removes personal files, back up important data first, and understand that applications may need to be reinstalled.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 support differences
The diagnostic order is similar on both versions, but the Settings labels differ. Windows 11 uses Settings > System for Activation, Troubleshoot, Storage, and Recovery. Windows 10 generally places those pages under Settings > Update & Security, except for Storage, which is under System.
Microsoft ended free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. On a Windows 10 installation in 2026, an unavailable update may reflect the operating system’s support status rather than the undocumented code. Record the build and support status before escalating, and do not assume that a Windows 11 troubleshooting result applies unchanged to an unsupported Windows 10 installation.
Changes to avoid while the cause is unknown
- Do not edit the registry, delete system folders, or replace DLL files based only on
0x008CE464. - Do not use a driver cleaner or force-install a driver when no device has been identified as faulty.
- Do not repeatedly interrupt an update or recovery operation; an incomplete installation can create additional startup problems.
- Do not enter a new product key or perform a reset before recording the original activation message and backing up important files.
- Do not assume the value is a Windows stop code without the surrounding screen text.
What to send Microsoft or the software vendor
Escalation is appropriate when the troubleshooter, Safe Mode checks, and recovery options do not resolve the symptom, or whenever the code appears in activation but is absent from Microsoft’s published list. A concise support case should contain:
- The exact error text, including punctuation, capitalization, and every additional code.
- A screenshot of the dialog or screen, with personal product keys and other sensitive information covered.
- The Windows edition, version, and build from
winver. - The application or Settings page that displayed the message.
- The precise trigger and whether the failure happens at startup, during an update, during activation, or after launching software.
- Recent hardware, driver, software, or Windows changes.
- The time of the failure and matching Event Viewer source, event ID, and description.
- Which Microsoft troubleshooter or recovery option you ran and its result.
Tell support whether Safe Mode starts successfully and whether disconnecting recent hardware changes the behavior. Those observations narrow the component responsible without claiming that the undocumented hexadecimal value has a known meaning.
Bottom line
There is no verified standalone fix for 0x008CE464 because its originating component and meaning are undocumented in the authoritative results available. Classify the trigger first: use the Windows Update troubleshooter for update or installation failures, the Activation troubleshooter and Microsoft’s code list for license dialogs, and Safe Mode, Device Manager, updates, and recovery options for crashes or restart loops. If the code remains unlisted or the symptom persists, escalate with the complete message and system evidence instead of applying speculative registry or driver changes.
