Capture the exact context before changing Windows
Write down the details while the message is visible. A photograph of the screen is useful if the computer restarts quickly. Record the following:
- The complete text surrounding
0x008BB7A6, including punctuation and any named file, module, or stop code. - The program, game, driver installer, Windows setup screen, or Microsoft account page that was open.
- What you were doing immediately before it appeared: starting Windows, installing an update, connecting a device, launching an application, or activating Windows.
- Whether the message appeared once or returns after the same action.

1. Remove recently added hardware
- Shut down Windows normally if it is responsive. If it is locked, use the power button only after waiting for the screen to respond and disconnecting power is unavoidable.
- Disconnect hardware that was added shortly before the first failure, such as an external device, expansion accessory, or newly installed internal component. Leave essential input and display equipment connected when possible.
- Start Windows and note whether the same action still produces the stop screen or restart.
This is an isolation step, not proof that the removed device is defective. If the failure stops, preserve the device name, connection type, and the date it was added for the next diagnostic conversation. If the failure continues, proceed to Safe Mode rather than repeatedly forcing restarts.
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services, making it a controlled way to investigate a recurring crash. If you can sign in, open Settings, choose System (Windows 11) or Update & Security (Windows 10), select Recovery, and under Advanced startup choose Restart now. In the recovery menu, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then choose the Safe Mode option shown on screen.
If Windows cannot reach Settings, interrupt startup only as a last resort until the Windows Recovery Environment appears, then use the same Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings path. Menu wording can vary by Windows build.

3. Observe, do not guess
- Write down whether Safe Mode starts successfully.
- Record the stop code, module name, or full message if one is displayed.
- Note whether the restart occurs before sign-in, immediately after sign-in, or only when a particular program or device is used.
Safe Mode is an investigation environment, not a guaranteed repair. Its value is that it gives you a repeatable observation to report alongside the original message. Avoid deleting drivers or changing registry values solely because the hexadecimal code looks technical.

Setup can be affected by external hardware that is not required to install Windows. Microsoft’s installation-error guidance specifically includes headphones, printers, scanners, speakers, USB flash drives, external hard drives, and docking stations among devices to disconnect temporarily.
- Cancel or exit the failed setup only if the screen offers a normal way to do so. Do not disconnect power during an active installation step unless the computer is completely unresponsive and no recovery option is available.
- Power down when Windows permits it.
- Disconnect the nonessential devices listed above and any other external accessory that is not required for display, keyboard, or mouse input.
- Start the installation or upgrade again and record the exact screen on which
0x008BB7A6appears. - If the code returns, preserve the full message and the list of devices that were connected. That information distinguishes a setup failure from a separate driver or hardware event.
Do not assume that disconnecting a device proves it caused the error. It simply removes one variable while you reproduce the setup problem. Reconnect devices after the installation test is complete and Windows is stable, one at a time if you need to identify which connection changes the behavior.

If it appears on an activation screen
Activation codes have their own troubleshooting tables and support paths. Compare the complete code and wording—not just the final characters—with Microsoft’s relevant activation-error list. If 0x008BB7A6 is not listed, retain the screenshot or transcription and contact Microsoft customer support with the edition of Windows, the device’s recent changes, and the exact activation message.
An unlisted activation code should not be matched to a random product key, registry edit, or paid “activation repair.” The missing mapping is itself important diagnostic information. Keep the original message available so support can determine which activation component generated it.
If only one application or installer shows the code
A program-specific message is different from a Windows stop screen. Start by recording the application’s name, the action that triggers the error, and whether other programs continue to work. If the code appears while installing a driver or device utility, include the device model and the installer name in your notes. If it appears after launching one application, include the application’s own version information and the exact point of failure.
Do not claim that Windows itself is damaged merely because the number uses hexadecimal notation. The code has no established universal meaning, so the originating program must be identified before a code-specific repair can be proposed. Preserve the installer or application message before removing the program; uninstalling first can erase useful context.
When to stop experimenting and escalate
Escalate when the code remains unlisted, the computer repeatedly restarts, or the failure persists after the relevant low-risk isolation step. Provide a concise packet:
- Windows edition and whether the machine is running Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- The complete error text, including any stop code, module, or application name.
- A photograph or screenshot of the original screen when possible.
- The trigger and reproduction steps.
- Whether recently added hardware was removed and whether Safe Mode started.
- For setup failures, the external devices disconnected and the stage at which setup stopped.
- For activation failures, the activation screen wording and the edition being activated.
This evidence is more useful than saying only “Windows shows 0x008BB7A6.” Microsoft’s own support approach for an activation code that is absent from its table is to contact customer support; the same evidence-first approach is appropriate when this code cannot be mapped to an authoritative component.
What not to do
- Do not label the message a virus without independent evidence. The code alone does not establish malware.
- Do not buy a physical product, replacement part, repair USB, or generic utility on the promise that it fixes this exact number; no authoritative source identifies one.
- Do not run a registry cleaner or delete system files simply because a website associates the code with them.
- Do not perform a reset or reinstall before recording the message and trigger. Those actions can remove the context needed to identify the source.
- Do not repeatedly force power-offs during an installation or upgrade. Use the recovery options shown by Windows whenever possible.
How to judge whether the problem is resolved
Use the same action that originally produced the message. A one-time appearance followed by normal operation is different from a repeatable failure. Record whether the code returns after a restart, after reconnecting the removed hardware, after leaving Safe Mode, or after retrying the installation without nonessential devices.
For a recurring crash, the important comparison is before and after the hardware-removal and Safe Mode tests. For an upgrade, compare setup with the nonessential devices disconnected. For activation, resolution means receiving a valid activation result or a clear support diagnosis—not merely making the number disappear from one screen.
If the error returns, keep the new timestamp and context with the original notes. Reproducibility, scope, and the cost of reversing the last change help a technician choose the next step without guessing.
