The same-looking code can be encountered in very different situations. An installation failure is handled differently from an activation problem, and a restart or blue screen requires a hardware, driver, boot, and recovery investigation. The wording around the number is therefore as important as the number itself.

Start with a short, safe triage
1. Capture the complete message
- Take a screenshot or copy the entire dialog, including its title, explanatory text, buttons, and any additional code.
- Write down the date and time, the application or Windows screen showing the error, and what you were doing immediately beforehand.
- Note whether Windows still starts normally, whether the computer restarted unexpectedly, and whether you saw a blue or black screen.
- Record recent changes such as a Windows update, a new driver, a printer or USB device, a graphics card, storage device, or other hardware.
A number without its surrounding text is not enough to select a reliable repair. Keep the screenshot and notes until the problem is resolved or you have contacted support.
2. Confirm the Windows edition and build
Press Windows + R, type winver, and press Enter. Record whether the computer is running Windows 11 or Windows 10 and the version and build shown in the dialog. This is especially important for activation and installation problems, because the license, edition, and installation stage can affect the next step.
3. Choose the matching branch
- Upgrade, installation, or Windows Update: use the setup and update steps below.
- Activation: use the activation steps below.
- Unexpected restart, blue screen, or black screen: use the crash and recovery steps below.
- An app or another context: collect logs and the complete message before attempting broad repairs.
If 0x008A6985 appears during Windows installation, upgrade, or update
Microsoft’s first-line guidance for common installation and upgrade errors is to remove possible hardware and software interference, run the built-in troubleshooter, and check permissions. Apply the steps in this order so that you can tell which change affected the result.

Disconnect nonessential hardware
- Save your work and shut down the computer if the setup program allows it.
- Unplug nonessential peripherals, including printers, scanners, speakers, USB flash drives, external hard drives, card readers, and other accessories.
- If you are using a laptop with a docking station, undock it and connect only the power adapter and the built-in display, keyboard, and touchpad.
- Leave essential input devices and the installation media connected. Do not disconnect a drive that contains the installation files while setup is running.
- Restart the installation or update and note whether the message is identical or whether the code changes.
Do not assume that a changed code is merely a different presentation of 0x008A6985. Record the new value and use the troubleshooting information for that value if Microsoft documents it.

Temporarily pause antivirus protection during installation
Microsoft includes temporarily disabling antivirus software among its installation troubleshooting steps. Use the security program’s own pause or real-time-protection control only for the duration of the installation attempt, and turn protection back on immediately after setup finishes or stops. This step does not identify the error and should not be treated as a substitute for security protection during normal use.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Settings.
- In Windows 11, select System, then Troubleshoot, then Other troubleshooters.
- In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Troubleshoot, and open the available additional troubleshooters.
- Start the Windows Update troubleshooter and allow it to inspect the update service and related settings.
- Apply any repair it reports, restart Windows if requested, and try the update once more.
The troubleshooter may repair a general update condition, but it does not establish what the undocumented hexadecimal value means. Keep the result and any message it displays.
Check Windows permissions
Make sure you are signed in with an account that can approve system changes. If setup asks for administrator approval, provide the credentials for an administrator account rather than dismissing the prompt. If the installation is launched from removable media or a shared location, verify that your account can read the files and that the destination drive is available. Do not change permissions on system folders or registry keys at random; an undocumented code is not evidence that those permissions should be rewritten.
Review the setup evidence
If the error returns, write down the exact phase: checking for updates, downloading, preparing, installing a feature, restarting, or verifying the installation. Open Event Viewer by pressing Windows + R, entering eventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. Look at Windows Logs, especially System and Application, around the recorded time. Preserve entries that mention the installer, update service, storage, or a device driver instead of deleting logs or repeatedly retrying without a record.

If the code appears during activation
An activation message is a separate troubleshooting path. Do not infer that 0x008A6985 is an activation code simply because it is hexadecimal; first confirm that the dialog is on the Windows activation page.
Confirm the installed edition
- Press
Windows + R, typewinver, and press Enter. - Record the Windows edition and version shown. An edition mismatch between the installed system and the license can prevent activation, so keep this information when seeking help.
Run the Activation troubleshooter
- Open Settings.
- In Windows 11, select System, then Activation.
- In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot if it is offered and follow the prompts.
- Restart only when the troubleshooter requests it, then check the activation page again.
Keep the complete result, not just the hexadecimal value. If the code is absent from Microsoft’s activation error list, Microsoft’s stated next step is to contact customer support and provide the full message and the Windows edition shown by winver.
If it appears after an unexpected restart, blue screen, or black screen
Microsoft notes that an unexpected restart can be caused by a hardware device, its driver, or software. Treat this branch as a stability and recovery problem rather than as an activation or update-code problem.

- Shut down the computer completely.
- Disconnect hardware added shortly before the first failure, such as a USB device, expansion card, external drive, printer, or dock.
- Start Windows with only the essential hardware attached.
- If the crashes stop, reconnect one device at a time and restart between tests. This identifies the device that changes the symptom without guessing that the hexadecimal code belongs to it.
Start Windows in Safe Mode
If Windows can reach the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power and Restart. At the recovery screen choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, then Startup Settings, and select Restart. Choose the Safe Mode option shown on the next screen. Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services, which helps distinguish a startup driver or service from a problem that occurs with the basic Windows environment.

If Windows cannot reach that screen, interrupt startup only as a last resort by turning the computer off during boot several times until Windows Recovery Environment appears. Use the same Troubleshoot and Advanced options path there. Avoid repeatedly interrupting power when recovery is not required.
Check Device Manager
- In Safe Mode or normal Windows, right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the device categories and look for a device with a yellow exclamation point.
- Open its Properties and read the device status and error details.
- If the device was added or updated recently, use the available rollback or uninstall option only when you can identify that change and have a way to reinstall the correct driver.
Do not install a random driver package because the code is undocumented. The device name, status text, and recent change are more useful evidence than the number alone.
Maintain free space on the system drive
Microsoft recommends keeping approximately 10% to 15% of the system drive free when troubleshooting recurring stop-code symptoms. Open File Explorer, select This PC, and check the free space on the drive containing Windows. If it is below that range, remove or move files you no longer need, empty the Recycle Bin, or use Windows storage settings. Preserve personal files and do not delete folders simply because their names look unfamiliar.

- Open Settings and go to Windows Update (or Update & Security then Windows Update in Windows 10).
- Select Check for updates.
- Install updates that Windows offers, restart when asked, and check whether the restart or screen failure returns.
If the update itself triggers the failure, return to the installation branch rather than repeatedly forcing the same update.
Use System Restore or another recovery option
If the problem began after a driver, application, or system change and Windows Recovery Environment offers a restore point, select Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, then System Restore. Choose a restore point dated before the first failure and follow the on-screen confirmation. System Restore can remove recent system changes while leaving personal documents in place, but it is not a substitute for a current backup and it may not be available.
When System Restore is unavailable or unsuccessful, use the other recovery options shown by Windows Recovery Environment, such as uninstalling a recent update or using startup repair. Read each option’s description before confirming and record what you selected. If recovery repeatedly fails, preserve the stop-screen text and seek Microsoft support or qualified service rather than deleting partitions or reinstalling without a backup.

When 0x008A6985 appears inside a specific application, during a game, or in a dialog unrelated to Windows setup and activation, there is not enough evidence to assign it to a Windows subsystem. Use a focused evidence process:
- Record the application name, version, and exact action that triggers the message.
- Check whether the application still fails after a normal restart and whether another user account sees the same behavior.
- Open Event Viewer with
eventvwr.mscand inspect Application and System entries at the recorded time. - Note any faulting application, module, driver, or accompanying status code. Do not treat an unrelated warning logged minutes earlier as the cause without matching timestamps.
- Use the application publisher’s documented repair, update, or reinstall process, keeping your data and settings backed up first.
If the application’s support team asks for logs, send the complete text and the relevant timestamp rather than only the hexadecimal number.

What not to do
- Do not assume the code is a virus, an activation failure, or a blue-screen code without seeing where it appears.
- Do not apply a registry edit copied from a forum when no authoritative source maps that edit to 0x008A6985.
- Do not download a driver or system file from an unverified site because a dialog recommends it.
- Do not keep antivirus protection disabled after an installation test.
- Do not repeatedly force shutdowns, erase recovery partitions, or reinstall Windows before protecting personal files and recording the original message.
- Do not report only “0x008A6985” to support. Include the Windows edition, complete wording, timestamp, setup phase or application, recent changes, and relevant log entries.
When to contact Microsoft support
Contact Microsoft when the code appears during activation and is not present in the activation list, when Windows cannot boot after the hardware, Safe Mode, update, and recovery checks, or when the installation path repeatedly fails with the same complete message. Provide the evidence you collected: the winver result, screenshot, exact time, recent hardware or driver changes, the step that triggered the failure, and any Event Viewer or Windows Setup entries that match that time.
Because the exact value is not identified in the current Microsoft pages, support may need the surrounding message and logs to determine which component generated it. That is more productive than treating the number as a standalone diagnosis.
