Error 0x0087D27C does not have a documented, code-specific definition in Microsoft’s published Windows upgrade-error tables. The correct fix depends on where it appeared: Windows Update, an upgrade or setup screen, activation, Microsoft Store or Xbox, boot, or recovery. Start by saving the complete message and identifying the failed operation; then work through the least disruptive repairs before considering a reset or reinstall.
These steps apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10. They are designed to preserve personal data whenever the selected recovery path supports it, but you should still back up important files and locate your BitLocker recovery key before making recovery changes.

What error 0x0087D27C means
There is no authoritative Microsoft entry that assigns one root cause or one universal remedy to 0x0087D27C. A hexadecimal code can be shown by several Windows components, and the same-looking number can lead to different troubleshooting paths depending on the operation that failed. Treat the code as a clue, not a diagnosis.

- An app or game installation in Microsoft Store or Xbox.
- Startup, automatic repair, or a recovery environment.
- A reset, restore, or installation-media operation.
Save a screenshot or copy the entire message, including any second error code, filename, drive letter, or percentage. The surrounding text is often more useful than 0x0087D27C alone.
Prepare safely before troubleshooting
Back up files and find the BitLocker key
Copy documents, photos, browser exports, and other irreplaceable data to an external drive or a trusted cloud location. If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, make sure you can retrieve the recovery key from the Microsoft account or organization that manages the PC. A reset or boot change can request that key; without it, an encrypted drive may remain inaccessible.
Record the system state
- Write down the Windows edition (Home or Pro), version, and whether the computer is managed by an employer or school.
- Record the operation that failed, the exact wording, the time, and whether the failure happened after a restart.
- Keep the computer connected to AC power and use a stable network while servicing Windows.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, external drives, and peripherals during an upgrade or setup attempt.
- Check that the system drive has adequate free space for the pending update or recovery operation.
Try the low-risk fixes first
- Restart Windows normally. Choose Start, Power, Restart rather than shutting down and immediately powering on. A pending setup phase can finish only after a restart.
- Install pending updates. Open Settings > Windows Update in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10. Select Check for updates, install what is offered, and restart when prompted.
- Retry once. Repeat the exact operation that produced the code after the restart. Do not repeatedly force a failed upgrade while the same pending restart or low-space condition remains.
- Check storage. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage; in Windows 10, open Settings > System > Storage. Remove or move large personal files only after backing them up. Leave additional working room beyond the update’s stated requirement.
- Remove setup conflicts. Temporarily disconnect nonessential hardware and, for an upgrade, uninstall software that the setup screen identifies as incompatible. Reinstall compatible versions after Windows is working.
Check Windows Update history and pending setup work
If the code appeared during an update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history. Find the update that failed, note its name and number, and check whether another restart is waiting.

A failed entry tells you which operation to retry and whether the problem is isolated to one update. Keep the entry and the full message for support. If the error appeared during a feature upgrade rather than a normal update, record the upgrade version shown on screen as well.

Repair Windows component files with DISM
Microsoft documents the following repair when Windows Update files or servicing components may be damaged. It checks the running Windows image and repairs the component store using the sources available to Windows.
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt or Windows Terminal.
- Right-click the result and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command exactly, then press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window or power off the PC while it is working.
- Record the final message. A completion message means DISM finished its operation; it does not prove that 0x0087D27C is fixed.
- Restart Windows and retry the failed update, upgrade, or setup action once.
If DISM reports that it cannot complete, save the wording and error number. Do not repeatedly interrupt it. The result can indicate that Windows needs a different repair source or that the storage device, servicing stack, policy, or installation itself needs attention.
Use Windows Update’s reinstall option on supported Windows 11 PCs
On supported Windows 11 installations, Microsoft provides Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This option reinstalls the same Windows version, repairs system files and components, and preserves installed apps, personal files, and settings.
- Back up important files and connect the PC to power.
- Open the path above and read the confirmation screen carefully.
- Choose Reinstall now and allow Windows to download and install the repair.
- Keep the computer connected and do not force a shutdown during the process.
- After Windows restarts, check Windows Update history and repeat the operation that originally failed.
The option may not appear on every Windows 11 edition, build, or managed device. If it is absent, continue with System Restore or Reset this PC according to the state of the computer.

Try System Restore when Windows still starts
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a driver, application, update, or configuration change and a restore point exists. Microsoft describes it as rolling back system files and settings, but not personal files, and it is available on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Save open work and search Start for Create a restore point.
- Open the result, select System Restore, and choose Next.
- Select a restore point dated before the error began. Use Scan for affected programs when offered to see which applications or drivers may be removed or restored.
- Confirm the restore point and let Windows restart. Do not interrupt the process.
- Once back at the desktop, test the operation that produced 0x0087D27C.
System Restore does not replace a file backup. Personal files are retained, but applications, drivers, and settings installed after the selected point may be changed.
Use Reset this PC only after less disruptive repairs
Reset this PC reinstalls Windows and offers a choice about personal files. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC > Get started.
Choose the reset mode deliberately
- Keep my files reinstalls Windows while retaining personal files in your user folders. Applications and many settings are removed, so collect installers, license information, and configuration details first.
- Remove everything deletes personal files, applications, and settings. Use it only when you have a verified backup and intentionally want a clean start.
Cloud download versus local reinstall
Windows may offer a cloud download or a local reinstall. A cloud download obtains a fresh Windows image and requires a reliable internet connection; a local reinstall uses files already stored on the PC. If the local image is damaged, the cloud choice can be preferable, but it still does not resolve a failing drive, firmware problem, policy restriction, or licensing issue.

- Back up data and verify the BitLocker key before selecting a reset.
- Read the list of applications that will be removed.
- Choose Keep my files unless you have a specific, backed-up reason to erase the computer.
- Confirm the reinstall source and start the reset.
- After setup completes, install updates, restore applications, and test the original operation.
Escalate to official installation media
If Windows cannot complete a repair, keeps returning 0x0087D27C, or does not boot normally, create official Windows installation media on another working computer. Microsoft’s installation-media guidance requires a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space and warns that its contents will be deleted. A blank 16 GB drive is a practical size for this task, but capacity alone does not protect files already on the drive.
Create the USB safely
- Use a blank USB drive and copy off anything you need to keep.
- On a working PC, download Microsoft’s current installation-media tool for the required Windows version.
- Run the tool as directed, select the correct language, edition, and architecture, and choose the USB drive.
- Double-check the drive letter before confirming. The media-creation process erases the selected USB.
- Label the finished drive and keep the Windows edition details with it.
Enter the recovery environment before reinstalling
Insert the USB into the affected PC and boot from it using the computer’s boot-menu key, which varies by manufacturer. On the first setup screen, choose Repair your computer rather than starting a clean installation. Use the available startup, restore, or command-line recovery options and test whether Windows can boot.
If you proceed to reinstall, read every disk and partition prompt. A clean installation can remove applications, files, and existing recovery partitions. Select a keep-files or repair path when it is offered and appropriate; reserve a full wipe for a deliberate, backed-up rebuild.

When the code appears outside Windows Update
Upgrade or setup
Capture the setup phase, percentage, edition, and any adjacent code. Restart, free space, disconnect nonessential peripherals, and remove software that setup identifies as incompatible before retrying. If the same phase fails after DISM and a supported recovery reinstall, use installation media or contact Microsoft with the saved message.

Activation
Open Settings > System > Activation in Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Activation in Windows 10. Record the activation status, edition, and whether the device recently changed hardware or was reinstalled. Do not assume that an update repair will correct a licensing or edition mismatch; provide the complete activation message to Microsoft or the organization that supplied the license.
Microsoft Store or Xbox
Record the app or game name, account used, and the full installation message. Verify that Windows is fully updated and restart before trying again. If the code returns only for one title or account, preserve that evidence for Microsoft Store or Xbox support instead of resetting Windows unnecessarily.
Boot or recovery
Write down whether Windows reaches the sign-in screen, whether an automatic-repair loop appears, and whether BitLocker requests a key. Use the recovery environment’s least destructive restore or startup option first. If the drive reports health warnings, disappears from firmware, or produces repeated read errors, stop reinstall attempts and have the hardware assessed.
When to contact support
- The code returns after restart, Windows Update history checks, DISM, and the least disruptive applicable recovery option.
- BitLocker recovery is required but the key cannot be found.
- The disk shows SMART, firmware, clicking, or repeated read/write warnings.
- The failure points to activation, organizational policy, firmware, or a hardware device rather than ordinary Windows servicing.
- Installation media cannot boot, cannot see the target disk, or reports a different error that you cannot interpret.
Give support the screenshot, complete text, Windows edition and version, update-history entry, DISM result, steps already attempted, and any secondary code. This prevents a generic 0x0087D27C report from being treated as a known single-condition error.
