How to Fix Error 0x00877A90 on Windows 11 and 10

Error 0x00877A90 has no documented, code-specific meaning in the Microsoft references checked. It may be produced by Windows, an installer, an update component, or a third-party application, so the correct fix depends on where and when it appears. Record the complete message and the program or Windows component that displays it, then verify the hexadecimal value before changing system files. The steps below start with low-risk checks and progress to recovery options without assuming an unsupported cause.

What error 0x00877A90 means

Microsoft’s general error-code guidance explains that system codes can occur in many locations and require context to interpret. The value 0x00877A90 is not mapped to a specific Windows 11 or Windows 10 problem in the Microsoft references checked for this guide. That means it would be misleading to label it automatically as a Windows Update error, a virus warning, a licensing failure, or a blue-screen code.

Hexadecimal values can be passed between components. A Windows component may return a status that another program displays, and independent software can generate its own hexadecimal codes. Two computers can therefore show the same-looking value for different underlying problems. The application name, the complete wording around the code, and the event that triggers it are more useful than the digits alone.

Do not infer a cause from the number

  • No authoritative Microsoft page checked defines 0x00877A90 or publishes a dedicated repair for it.
  • A code shown only by one application should be treated as that application’s diagnostic until its vendor confirms otherwise.
  • A code that appears during Windows Update, activation, startup, or a stop error needs a different troubleshooting path.

Record the context before changing anything

Preserve the evidence while the message is visible. Exact capitalization and punctuation can help identify whether the value was copied correctly.

  1. Write down the complete error text, including any title, file name, component name, or secondary number.
  2. Note whether the dialog came from Windows Update, an installer, activation settings, a blue screen, startup, or a normal application window.
  3. Record the application or Windows component that displayed it. If a setup program or game is involved, include its name and version if shown.
  4. Write down what happened immediately before the message: a driver or hardware change, a Windows update, a new application, a restore, or a restart.
  5. Note whether the problem happens once, on every launch, after a particular action, or at random.

Take a screenshot if possible, but also copy the text into a note. A screenshot can be unreadable later, while the exact text can be supplied to support staff or searched in the originating product’s documentation.

Verify the hexadecimal value with Microsoft Error Lookup Tool

Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool (ERR) displays the message text associated with a hexadecimal status code. The official download page lists version 6.4.5, published July 15, 2024, and states that the utility does not require elevation.

Run the utility

  1. Download the current Microsoft Error Lookup Tool from Microsoft’s official download source and extract it to a folder you can find.
  2. Open Command Prompt. You normally do not need to choose “Run as administrator” for this utility.
  3. Change to the folder containing the executable, then run the command shown below, replacing the sample with the exact code:
Err_6.4.5.exe 0x00877A90

If the tool returns a message, compare it with the full dialog and the context in which you saw the error. A matching text can indicate the Windows status family involved, but it still does not prove which component caused the failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If ERR returns no message

An empty or unknown result is useful information. Do not convert it into a claim that Windows is damaged. The value may be application-specific, copied incorrectly, or not present in the version of the lookup database. Keep the original message and ask the software vendor that displayed it for an interpretation.

Choose the troubleshooting path that matches the symptom

Situation First checks Escalation
Windows Update or installation Run the Get Help/Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, remove nonessential external hardware, check permissions, and retry. Use the update repair commands, then recovery options or Microsoft Support if the failure persists.
Blue screen or repeated restart Remove newly added hardware, try Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, maintain free disk space, and install current updates. Use System Restore or another recovery option and investigate drivers, hardware, and system files.
One application only Capture the full message, verify the code, and inspect that application’s logs or repair options. Contact the application vendor; do not assume the number has a standard Windows meaning.
Activation or licensing Confirm the Windows edition and the activation screen where the value appears. Use Microsoft activation support and verify the license or account associated with the installation.

Back up personal files before invasive repairs

Before resetting Windows, reinstalling software, repairing a disk, or using recovery tools, back up documents, photos, project folders, browser exports, and any other irreplaceable files. Microsoft specifically advises backing up personal files before troubleshooting update problems. A USB flash drive can be used: insert it, open File Explorer, select the files and folders, and copy them to the removable drive. Safely eject the drive when the copy completes.

If the computer is unstable, copy the most important files first and verify that they open from the backup. Do not format the drive or start a reset until the backup is complete.

1. Run the built-in troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System and select Troubleshoot, then Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run. In some Windows builds, the guided workflow opens through the Get Help app instead.
  4. Apply any recommended action, restart the PC, and try the update again.

The exact labels can vary slightly between Windows 11 and Windows 10 builds; use the Windows Update troubleshooter or Get Help flow that your edition presents.

2. Remove simple blockers

  • Unplug nonessential USB devices, external drives, docks, printers, and other hardware, then retry.
  • Confirm that the account has permission to install updates and that the device is connected to a reliable power source.
  • Restart Windows even if the update screen does not request it. A pending reboot can prevent another installation from completing.
  • Check for available storage in Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10. Remove or move files only after backing them up.
  • Install any current servicing or cumulative updates offered by Windows Update, then restart before testing again.

3. Repair update components only when the symptom is update-related

The following sequence is an advanced update repair. Open Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows Terminal (Admin). Run each command separately and wait for it to finish. Stopping services and renaming update folders resets cached update data; Windows recreates the folders on the next update attempt.

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start bits
net start cryptsvc

Restart the computer and retry Windows Update. If a command reports that a service is not running, continue with the remaining steps rather than repeatedly forcing it.

4. Check the system drive and repair Windows files

Use these commands for update or system-file symptoms, not as a universal response to an unknown application code. They require administrator access.

chkdsk /f C:

Windows may tell you that the volume is in use and ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y, restart, and allow the disk check to complete. Interrupting it can leave the file system in an uncertain state.

After Windows starts again, run the image repair and system-file checker in this order:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow

Wait for each command to reach 100 percent. Restart after both complete, then test the original update or installation action.

When the code accompanies a crash, blue screen, or repeated restart

A recurring crash needs a different sequence from a single update failure. Microsoft’s stop-error guidance notes that crashes can involve drivers, hardware, Microsoft code, or unknown causes; the proportions reported for analyzed stop errors generally—70 percent third-party driver code, 10 percent hardware, 5 percent Microsoft code, and 15 percent unknown—do not identify the cause of 0x00877A90.

1. Remove recent hardware and test stability

Shut down, disconnect newly added hardware that is not required to boot, and start Windows again. Reconnect devices one at a time only after the system is stable. If the code started after adding a memory module, graphics card, storage device, dock, or USB adapter, that timing is important evidence for the manufacturer.

  • Write up to 15X faster than standard USB 2.0 drives(1)
  • Move a full-length movie to the drive in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.1 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 host device; Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]

2. Start Windows in Safe Mode

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. When the menu appears, choose Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking if you need network access.

If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, a startup program, service, driver, or recently installed component becomes more likely. Remove or roll back the recent change from normal Windows when possible, or use Device Manager in Safe Mode to inspect the affected device.

3. Inspect Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand categories related to the hardware involved, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  3. Look for a yellow warning icon or an unknown device. Open its Properties to read the status message and driver details.
  4. Use the device manufacturer’s documented driver or rollback option. Avoid removing a device if you do not have a way to reinstall its driver.

4. Maintain working space and updates

Microsoft’s stop-error guidance recommends keeping roughly 10 to 15 percent of the system drive free. This is a general maintenance recommendation, not a threshold specific to 0x00877A90. Check storage, install current Windows updates, and restart before judging whether the crash has stopped.

5. Use System Restore or recovery options

If the crashes began after a driver or software change, open Settings > System > Recovery and review the available recovery choices. System Restore can return system files and settings to an earlier restore point without intentionally deleting personal documents, but applications or drivers installed after that point may be affected. Read the confirmation screen carefully. If Windows cannot start normally, reach the same tools through Troubleshoot > Advanced options in the recovery environment.

When only one application shows 0x00877A90

If Windows remains stable and the value appears inside one program, focus on that program first. Capture its complete dialog, check its own log folder or event viewer instructions, and use its built-in repair, update, or reinstall process if documented. Record the application version, Windows edition, and the action that triggers the message.

Do not delete system folders or run the update-component reset merely because an application displays a hexadecimal value. Send the evidence to the application vendor and ask whether 0x00877A90 is an application-defined status. If the program was installed recently, testing a clean reinstall after backing up its settings can distinguish a damaged installation from a broader Windows problem.

When it appears during activation or licensing

Open Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10. Record the Windows edition, activation state, and the exact screen that displays the code. Confirm that the edition installed matches the license associated with the device or Microsoft account. For unresolved activation messages, use Microsoft’s activation support channel rather than applying update-cache or disk-repair commands.

Windows 10 support timing

Microsoft ended free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer can still display this code after that date, but the absence of new free updates changes the support options and may limit what Windows Update can offer. Verify the installed edition and consider Microsoft’s supported upgrade or recovery guidance before relying on an update-based fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to escalate and what to provide

Escalate when the code returns after the matching manual steps, the computer repeatedly crashes, or the lookup tool cannot identify the value.

  • One application: contact that application’s vendor with the full text, screenshots, logs, version, and reproduction steps.
  • Windows Update or installation: contact Microsoft Support after running the built-in troubleshooter and documenting the failed update or setup stage.
  • Blue screen or restart loop: use Microsoft’s stop-error guidance, review drivers and hardware, and use System Restore or another recovery option if Windows remains unstable.
  • Activation: provide the Windows edition, activation status, and license details to Microsoft activation support.

Keep a timeline of each change and its result. That prevents repeating a failed repair and gives support a way to distinguish an update failure from a hardware or application fault.
