- Write down the entire dialog, including the sentence before and after the code. Take a screenshot if possible.
- Record the program, Settings page, installer, or recovery screen where it appeared.
- Note what you were doing: downloading an update, installing or upgrading Windows, entering an activation key, launching an application, or recovering from a restart.
- Check whether Windows restarted, displayed a blue or black screen, or still boots normally.
- Recheck every character. Distinguish zero from the letter O and confirm that the prefix is
0x. A single transcription error can point you to an unrelated error.
Do not delete update folders, edit the registry, or run third-party “code fix” files while the source of the message is unknown.

Choose the repair path by symptom
Use the row that matches the screen or event you observed. If you cannot identify a row, start with the Windows Update troubleshooter only when the problem occurred during an update; otherwise return to the capture steps above.

Fixes for an update-related occurrence
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft identifies the built-in troubleshooter as the first supported action for update errors. Use the path for your edition:
- Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
- Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
Allow the checks and any offered corrections to finish. Restart even if the troubleshooter says it made no change, then open Windows Update and select Check for updates. Record any new error number; a newly reported code is more useful than the unresolved string.

2. Check the disk and repair the Windows image
If the update still fails, open an elevated Command Prompt. Select Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Run these commands one at a time:

If Windows says the volume is in use, typeYto schedule the check and restart. Let the disk check complete before signing in.DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses to service updates. The progress percentage can remain unchanged for a while; do not close the window merely because it pauses.sfc /scannow
System File Checker scans protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when a valid replacement is available.
Restart after the commands finish and retry Windows Update. If a command reports that it could not complete, preserve the exact message rather than repeatedly rerunning it; that result is useful when deciding whether recovery or support is needed.
3. Use a clean restart when software conflicts are suspected
A background service or startup program can interfere with update installation. Perform a clean restart using Microsoft’s documented clean-start procedure, restart, and try the update before re-enabling nonessential startup items. If the update succeeds, restore services in groups to identify the conflict instead of disabling security software permanently.
Fixes when the code appeared during Windows Setup or an upgrade
Disconnect external devices
Shut down and unplug nonessential hardware: printers, scanners, USB storage, external disks, docks, and similar accessories. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, and the storage required to run Setup. A device or its driver can interrupt an upgrade even when it works normally in everyday use.

Temporarily disable antivirus protection only for the duration of the installation if the product’s instructions allow it, then turn it back on immediately after Setup. This is a troubleshooting step, not a recommendation to operate without protection. Confirm that the account running Setup has administrator rights and that the target drive has sufficient free space.

Retry the supported troubleshooting sequence
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and launch Setup again with external devices still disconnected. If Setup produces a different code or a complete message, use that information rather than treating 0x0087550D as a known Setup code. If the upgrade fails repeatedly, stop before deleting installation folders or changing the registry; use Windows recovery options or Microsoft support with the setup logs and exact message.
Fixes for an activation message
Confirm the installed edition
Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and select OK. Record the Windows edition and version shown. Activation can fail when a key does not match the installed edition, so do not assume that an activation code is interchangeable between Home, Pro, or other editions.
Run Activation troubleshooter
Open the activation page for your edition:
- Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Activation, then select Troubleshoot when it is available.
- Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation, then select Troubleshoot.
Apply the result it provides and restart. If the troubleshooter reports another code, research that code or give it to Microsoft support. Microsoft advises contacting support when an activation code is not listed. Do not use unofficial activators or scripts that promise to bypass licensing; they can alter system components and make later diagnosis harder.

Remove recent changes
Power off the computer and remove hardware added immediately before the problem: memory, storage, graphics hardware, USB devices, docks, or adapters. Reconnect only the minimum required to boot. If the error began after a driver or firmware change, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback or uninstall process rather than installing a random driver package.

Start Windows in Safe Mode
From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select the Safe Mode option. If Windows cannot reach that menu, interrupt startup twice; on the next boot, Windows should enter the recovery environment.
In Safe Mode, open Device Manager and look for yellow warning icons. Expand the category related to the recently changed device, then choose the device’s supported Update driver, Roll back driver, or Disable device option. Restart normally after each controlled change so you know which action affected the result.
Check storage space and pending updates
Ensure the system drive has adequate free space for updates and recovery files. Remove only files you recognize through Settings > System > Storage in Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage in Windows 10. Install pending Windows and hardware updates after the system is stable. A full drive can prevent servicing operations and can also limit recovery options.

In Windows Recovery Environment, try Startup Repair first. If the failure began after a recent update or driver, use Uninstall Updates or System Restore when an applicable restore point exists. Keep personal-file backup implications in mind before choosing Reset this PC. If recovery cannot restore a bootable system, copy important files from another working environment and contact Microsoft or the device manufacturer with the stop code, logs, and hardware history.
How to decide whether the repair worked
- The original operation completes without the unidentified code.
- Windows Update downloads and installs an available update after a restart.
- Setup reaches the desktop without rolling back.
- Activation shows the correct status for the edition reported by
winver. - The computer boots repeatedly without the blue or black screen returning.
Test the specific operation that triggered the message; simply reaching the desktop once does not prove that an update, upgrade, or activation problem is resolved. Keep the original screenshot and command results if the error returns.
Windows 10 lifecycle and migration considerations
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. That date does not explain 0x0087550D, but it changes the decision after troubleshooting: a Windows 10 installation may no longer receive the same ongoing support and security maintenance as a supported release. If the computer meets Windows 11 requirements, evaluate an upgrade using Microsoft’s current compatibility guidance. If it does not, plan a supported replacement or maintenance strategy rather than relying on repeated repairs to extend an unsupported installation.
When to contact Microsoft support
Escalate with the full dialog, screenshot, edition and version from winver, the operation that triggered the message, restart or crash details, hardware or driver changes, and the exact output from chkdsk, DISM, and SFC. Contact support promptly when Windows will not boot, activation remains unresolved after its troubleshooter, Setup repeatedly rolls back, or a repair command reports an error you cannot interpret. Because no authoritative definition exists for this hexadecimal string, the surrounding evidence is more valuable than the string alone.
