The steps below start with low-risk diagnostics and progress to component repair and recovery without assuming the code indicates malware, activation trouble, storage failure, or a bad driver.
What error 0x00868774 means
Microsoft support material does not define 0x00868774 as a code belonging to one Windows component. That means the hexadecimal value alone cannot tell you whether Windows Update, an upgrade, an application, activation, a driver, or another process produced the message. Two computers can display the same value in different situations and require different fixes.

Do not infer that the code is a virus, proof of a failing disk, or evidence of a defective driver. Those causes are possible only when the surrounding message, event log, or symptoms support them. A reliable fix begins by identifying the operation that was running when the code appeared.
Capture the context before changing anything
Write down the exact wording around the code and take a screenshot if the message may disappear. Note whether it appeared while downloading or installing an update, during Windows setup or an upgrade, when opening a particular application, or after a restart. Also record any recent change, such as a driver installation, new peripheral, security-software change, hardware replacement, or major application install.

- Update context: the code appears in Windows Update history, during a download, or while an update is being installed.
- Setup context: it appears during an upgrade, feature update, or clean installation.
- Application context: one program fails to launch or closes with the code.
- Crash or restart context: Windows freezes, reboots, or shows the code before or after a sign-in.
If the message names a file, service, device, or application, preserve that name. It can determine which later checks are relevant. Avoid deleting folders, changing registry values, or using a random “code fixer” until you know the trigger; those actions can remove useful evidence and create new problems.
Choose the least risky path for your trigger

Work from the top of the relevant path downward. Repair commands preserve personal files, while System Restore and reset or clean-install choices can have broader effects and should be considered only after simpler checks.
Fix 0x00868774 when it appears during Windows Update
Windows 11: run the automated troubleshooter
- Open Get Help from the Start menu.
- Search for the Windows Update troubleshooter and start the automated diagnostic.
- Apply any recommended action, restart the computer, and open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and note whether the same code returns.
Microsoft specifically recommends the Update Troubleshooter when an error code appears while downloading or installing Windows updates. Let it finish before trying another repair so that its findings are not obscured by simultaneous changes.

Windows 10: use the Settings troubleshooter
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update, select Run the troubleshooter, and apply the suggested actions.
- Restart, return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not resolve the issue, keep its result and the exact update name. That information is more useful for escalation than the hexadecimal code by itself.

Fix a setup or upgrade failure
When 0x00868774 appears during an upgrade or installation, remove variables before retrying. Shut down the computer and disconnect nonessential USB devices, printers, scanners, external drives, docking hardware, and other accessories. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and hardware required to run setup.
Check permissions and security software
- Use an account with administrative rights for the upgrade.
- Address security software that is known to be incompatible with the upgrade. Follow the security product’s documented temporary-disable or removal procedure rather than deleting files manually.
- Reconnect peripherals one at a time after setup succeeds; if the code returns, the last device or its driver becomes a useful suspect.
Retry the same setup operation after restarting. If it fails again, record the stage at which it stops and any named file or device. Do not assume that a setup failure proves the installation media, storage drive, or operating system image is defective without that additional evidence.
Repair the disk and Windows component files
Use an elevated Command Prompt for the following commands. To open one, type Command Prompt in Start, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. Save open work first.
Check the file system
- At the elevated prompt, enter
chkdsk /f C:and press Enter. - If Windows says the volume is in use and asks to schedule the check, type
Yand press Enter. - Restart the computer and allow the disk check to complete without powering it off.
The command checks the file system on drive C: and requests repairs. If Windows is installed on another drive letter in a recovery environment, use the letter that actually contains the installation.

Repair the component store, then protected system files
- After Windows starts, open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - When DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow. - Restart Windows and retry the update, setup, or application that produced the code.
Run the commands in that order. Closing the window, restarting, or disconnecting power while a repair is active can leave the operation incomplete. If a command reports an error, preserve the complete text instead of repeating it indefinitely; the wording identifies a different problem than 0x00868774 alone.
When an application shows the code
If one application displays 0x00868774 while launching, first confirm whether Windows Update or setup also fails. A code confined to one program points toward that program’s files, permissions, dependencies, or a recent change rather than a universal Windows fault.
- Record the application name, version if shown, and the exact action that triggers the message.
- Restart Windows and test once more before making changes.
- Install pending Windows updates if the system is otherwise stable, then test the application again.
- If the failure began immediately after a driver, hardware, or software change, temporarily reverse that change using the vendor’s supported uninstall or rollback process.
- Run the disk and Windows-file checks in the preceding section if other programs also crash or Windows reports damaged components.
Do not treat a single application failure as proof of malware. Use the application’s own repair or reinstall option only after preserving settings, saved work, and any activation information it requires.

Start Windows in Safe Mode
- Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10.
- Under advanced startup, choose Restart now.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Choose the Safe Mode option and check whether the restarts or the code continue.
If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, a startup program, service, or driver loaded only during normal startup becomes more likely. If it continues, Windows files, storage, hardware, or another system-level cause remains possible.
Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Look for warning icons and expand the categories related to any device named in the error message.
- For the implicated device, use its supported Update driver or Uninstall device action, then restart.
Do not remove an unknown device merely because it has a warning icon. Record its name and hardware category first. A driver change is most relevant when the crashes began immediately after that driver or device was installed.
Check free space and pending updates
Open Settings > System > Storage and confirm that the Windows drive has room for updates, temporary files, and recovery operations. Remove only files you recognize, and empty the Recycle Bin only after confirming that it contains nothing needed. Then install current Windows updates that the computer can successfully apply and restart.

Before any recovery operation, copy important documents, photos, browser exports, and application data to another location. A repair command is generally less disruptive than a reset, but every recovery action should be planned around your backup.
System Restore
If restore points exist, open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore and select a point created before the code began. System Restore can reverse system files, drivers, and settings while leaving personal files in place, but applications or drivers installed after the selected point may need to be reinstalled.
Other recovery choices
When System Restore is unavailable or ineffective, Windows recovery options may include uninstalling a recent update, startup repair, resetting the PC, or reinstalling Windows. Read each screen’s data-preservation choice carefully. A reset or clean installation is a last resort for this code because the code itself does not establish that Windows must be replaced.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That end includes free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes. A Windows 10 computer may therefore fail to receive a fix or update that a supported Windows release would receive; the end-of-support status does not explain what 0x00868774 means.
For a Windows 10 system that repeatedly encounters update errors, check whether its hardware and applications can move to Windows 11, and plan a backup before any upgrade. If the device cannot move to Windows 11, account for the lack of ongoing Windows 10 security fixes when deciding whether to keep using it.

Keep a short timeline of each change and result. If you contact Microsoft or the application publisher, provide the exact message, trigger, Windows edition, recent changes, command output, and whether Safe Mode changed the behavior. That information is more actionable than reporting only “error 0x00868774.”
