When 0x00857C8C appears during Windows Update
Microsoft says the Windows Update troubleshooter can run diagnostics and attempt to fix common update problems. Use the path for your Windows version.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.

- Restart the computer, then return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.

If the same code returns, save the new complete message and the troubleshooter result. A recurring, unlisted code should be escalated with that information rather than “repaired” by deleting registry entries or system folders.

Setup has a different failure surface from an ordinary update. Microsoft’s general setup guidance starts with hardware, security software, the update troubleshooter, and permissions.
Disconnect nonessential hardware
Shut down if the installer allows it, then unplug devices that are not required to complete setup. This includes printers, scanners, USB drives, and external disks. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and the storage device needed for the installation. Reconnect peripherals after Windows finishes and has started normally.

Consider security-software interference
Security software can interfere with an installation in some configurations. If the setup instructions for your product or Microsoft specifically call for a temporary change, follow those instructions, disconnect from untrusted networks where appropriate, and restore protection immediately after setup. Do not leave a computer unprotected as a general troubleshooting strategy.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and verify permissions
Run the troubleshooter using the Windows 11 or Windows 10 path above, even if the message appeared in an upgrade assistant. Confirm that the account running setup is allowed to install software and that the installer can access the target drive and required folders. If the installer supplies a separate log or a more specific message, preserve it for the next diagnosis.
After a rollback, do not immediately start another upgrade attempt. First note the phase in which setup stopped, which devices were connected, and whether the code changed. Those details distinguish a setup problem from a device or driver problem that only became visible during the restart.
When the code appears with repeated restarts or a stop screen

Remove recently added hardware
Power off and remove hardware added shortly before the problem began. Start with external devices, expansion hardware, and newly connected storage. Try Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. From a working desktop, open the recovery options in Settings and choose the advanced-startup restart option, then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart and choose Safe Mode. On Windows 10, the equivalent recovery controls are under Settings > Update & Security > Recovery; on Windows 11 they are under Settings > System > Recovery.
If the system is too unstable to reach Settings, interrupting startup can open Windows Recovery after several failed starts. Use that route only to reach recovery tools; do not repeatedly force power-off while Windows is writing files.
Inspect Device Manager
- Open Device Manager.
- Look for a warning icon next to a device.
- Open the device’s properties and note its name and status message.
- If the problem began after a device change, update the device, disable it temporarily, or uninstall it as appropriate.
- Restart and test the action that previously produced 0x00857C8C.
Do not disable or uninstall multiple devices at once. Changing one suspect device at a time preserves a usable comparison and makes rollback possible.
Check storage and updates
Ensure the system drive has adequate free space, then install current Windows updates that your edition can receive. When it appears during Windows activation
First confirm the installed edition and version with winver. Activation behavior can depend on the edition, so do not assume that a code seen during activation is a setup or update failure.
- Open the Windows Activation settings page.
- Run the Activation troubleshooter when that option is available.
- Record whether the displayed code changes, disappears, or is replaced by a more specific message.
- If the resulting activation code is not listed in Microsoft’s activation guidance, contact Microsoft customer support with the complete message, edition, version, and device history.
Do not change the product key, edit licensing files, or reset activation repeatedly without first recording the original state. Those actions can remove useful diagnostic information and may create a separate licensing problem.
Repair Windows files and servicing components carefully
If the code accompanies failed updates, setup rollbacks, or repeated system errors, Windows file corruption may be involved. Microsoft Learn’s Windows Update guidance covers checking and repairing corruption and verifying servicing prerequisites for the specific installed Windows version.
Use Microsoft’s instructions that match the edition and build shown by winver. Windows 10 support status matters in 2026
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A Windows 10 computer can still start and run installed software, but an update-related failure may not have a new Microsoft fix available through the normal support channel.
Record the exact Windows 10 edition and build before deciding whether an update failure is a repair issue, a compatibility issue, or a consequence of the operating system’s support status. Do not describe the end of support as the cause of 0x00857C8C; the code remains unidentified unless the originating component supplies a more specific explanation.
