What error 0x0085680C means
A hexadecimal value alone does not identify a Windows component. Searches of authoritative Windows guidance do not provide a definition for 0x0085680C, a documented cause, or a verified success rate for a particular repair. The same-looking code can be shown by an installer, an application, an activation workflow, or a support wrapper rather than by Windows itself.

That is why a safe fix starts with the surrounding evidence. Write down the window title, every sentence in the dialog, the name of the application or installer, and the action that triggered it. A code shown during Windows Update calls for a different workflow from the same code shown by a game installer or a sign-in component.

No. The code by itself establishes neither malware nor hardware failure. It also does not establish activation failure, disk corruption, or a specific driver fault. Those conclusions require the originating program, the full text, Windows version and build, and a reproducible symptom such as a failed update or repeated restart.

Capture the context before trying a repair
- Copy the complete error. Use the dialog’s copy button if available, or take a photograph. Include the title bar, explanatory text, buttons, and any file name or application name.
- Record the trigger. Note whether it appeared during sign-in, activation, Windows Update, a Windows upgrade, application installation, startup, shutdown, or a crash.
- Check the Windows build. Press
Windows+R, enterwinver, and record the edition, version, and OS build. Do this on both Windows 11 and Windows 10 systems because menu labels differ. - List recent changes. Record updates, new drivers, newly installed applications, connected peripherals, and hardware changes made immediately before the first occurrence.
- Note the symptom. Distinguish a one-time dialog from an update rollback, an application that will not launch, a blue or black stop screen, or an automatic restart.
Do not dismiss the dialog before saving this information. If it cannot be copied, photograph it with a phone and keep the original wording; paraphrasing can remove the clue that identifies the responsible component.
Use the least-invasive checks first
1. Disconnect nonessential external hardware
Microsoft’s upgrade and installation guidance says to try its general fixes before searching for a specific code, and its first general fix is to remove nonessential external hardware. Shut down if a device cannot be safely unplugged while Windows is running, then disconnect printers, scanners, USB storage, docking stations, external hard drives, webcams, and other accessories that are not required to start the computer. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection needed for the task.
Restart, repeat the exact action that produced the code, and see whether the message changes. If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time and retry after each connection. The device that restores the symptom is useful evidence; it is not proof that the device itself is defective, because its cable, port, firmware, or driver may be involved.

2. Restart once and retry the same operation
A restart clears a pending installer state and reloads services without changing files or registry settings. After restarting, perform the same operation once, with the same account and network. Avoid repeatedly clicking a failing installer or interrupting an update; repeated attempts can leave several partial logs and make the timeline harder to interpret.
3. Check for a pending restart or paused update
Open Settings > System > Windows Update in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10. Install updates that are already offered, choose Restart now when Windows requests it, and wait for the process to finish. If the code appeared during an update, do not jump directly to registry edits or third-party cleaners; use the update troubleshooting path first.

Run Microsoft’s Get Help troubleshooter
Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance for Windows 11 and Windows 10 directs users to the Get Help troubleshooter and its associated repair steps. Open the Get Help app from Start, search for Windows Update troubleshooter, and follow the prompts for the affected computer. The tool may ask permission to run checks or reset update components. Read each proposed action and allow it to complete before restarting.
If Get Help is not installed or cannot open, use the built-in settings path for your edition: in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter. Labels can vary slightly by build.

Restart if requested, return to Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install one update cycle. Record whether the code returns, whether installation rolls back, and the update’s knowledge-base identifier if one is shown. That identifier and the exact error text are more useful to support than the hexadecimal value alone.
When an update is stuck or repeatedly rolls back
Allow Windows to complete its rollback rather than powering off. If Windows starts normally afterward, capture the failure time and update name from Windows Update history at Settings > Windows Update > Update history (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history (Windows 10). Remove nonessential hardware again and retry the troubleshooter. If the machine cannot boot normally, use the Safe Mode procedure below and preserve the update history or screenshots before making further changes.
Fixes when it appeared during a Windows upgrade or installation
For an in-place Windows upgrade or installation, keep the computer connected to reliable power and disconnect nonessential peripherals as described above. Close other applications, confirm that the installer is the one you intentionally started, and retry only after recording the complete message. Microsoft’s upgrade and installation guidance specifically recommends general fixes before code-specific searching; the external-hardware check is the first of those steps.

If the installer names a particular application, driver, or file, contact that product’s vendor rather than assuming the hexadecimal value is a Windows code. Give the vendor the full dialog, the installer version, the Windows build from winver, and the point at which the installation stopped.
Fixes when it appeared during activation
Open Settings > System > Activation in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Activation in Windows 10. Select Troubleshoot if it is offered, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the digital license when prompted, and follow the activation workflow.
Microsoft’s activation guidance lists known activation codes and directs users to customer support when a code is not listed. Because 0x0085680C is not defined in the searched activation guidance, do not change the product key or edit the registry solely because this value appeared. If activation troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, escalate with the complete message, edition, build, and proof of the license or account relationship that support requests.
Fixes when an application or installer displayed it
Identify the responsible program
Look at the dialog title and the window behind it. Check whether the message appeared immediately after launching one application, selecting an installer button, or opening a document. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10, select the named application and use Advanced options > Repair when that option exists. If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, use Reset only after reading what data the reset removes.
Reinstall from a known source
Uninstall the affected application, restart, and reinstall it using the publisher’s current installer or the Microsoft Store listing you normally use. Do not download replacement DLL files from random websites. If the application stores projects or profiles locally, back them up before uninstalling. A vendor-specific error log or support article may map the code even though Windows itself does not.

Check application logs without guessing
Open Event Viewer by searching Start, select Windows Logs > Application, and inspect entries at the exact time of the failure. Also open Reliability Monitor by searching Start for View reliability history; select the day marked with the red failure icon and read the application name and faulting module. These records can identify the program that issued the message, but a faulting module name is evidence to investigate, not a diagnosis by itself.

If the computer repeatedly restarts, shows a stop-code screen, or fails shortly after a hardware change, Microsoft’s crash guidance recommends removing recently added hardware and trying Safe Mode. Disconnect the newest peripheral or component first, then restart. Do not remove internal components while the computer is powered or under warranty; use the manufacturer’s service procedure for internal hardware.
Enter Safe Mode from Windows
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- At the recovery menu, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- When the numbered list appears, press
4orF4for Safe Mode, or5orF5for Safe Mode with Networking if network access is required.
In Safe Mode, test whether the failure occurs with only essential Windows services and drivers. If the code disappears, recently installed software, a startup item, or a driver becomes more likely, but the result still does not identify which one. Remove or roll back only the change you can tie to the timeline, then restart normally and test again.
If Windows will not stay open
Interrupting startup twice can cause Windows Recovery Environment to appear on the next boot. From there, use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings to reach Safe Mode. If BitLocker asks for a recovery key, obtain it from the account or organization that manages the device before proceeding. Never erase the disk or reset Windows before preserving files and collecting the original error details.

Optional system-file checks for broader Windows symptoms
If several unrelated Windows components fail, menus are missing, or the error follows an interrupted update, you can run Microsoft’s built-in integrity checks. These commands do not decode 0x0085680C; they test whether protected Windows files and the component store are damaged.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to reach completion. Keep the computer connected to power. - Run
sfc /scannowand wait until verification reaches 100 percent. - Restart and retry the original operation once.
If either command reports that it could not complete, save the exact result and do not repeatedly rerun it. A support technician can use the result with the build number and event logs. If the code came only from one third-party application and Windows otherwise works normally, these broad checks are less likely to explain that application’s message.

Disconnecting a peripheral, running a troubleshooter, and testing Safe Mode are reversible. Registry edits, deleting update caches, replacing DLL files, using unofficial installers, or resetting Windows are invasive and should wait until the responsible component is identified and important files are backed up.
When to escalate and what to send
Contact the application vendor when its window or installer displayed the message. Contact Microsoft Support when the code appears in Windows Update, upgrade, activation, or a Windows crash workflow and the built-in steps do not resolve it. Microsoft specifically directs users to support for activation values that are not listed in its guidance; the same evidence-first approach is appropriate for this undocumented value.
Send one organized package rather than a series of guesses:
- A screenshot or copied transcript of the entire dialog, including its title and buttons.
- The application, installer, or Windows feature that displayed it.
- Windows edition, version, and build from
winver. - The exact date and time, what you were doing, and whether the failure is reproducible.
- Recent updates, drivers, applications, peripherals, or internal hardware changes.
- Relevant Windows Update history, Event Viewer entries, Reliability Monitor details, and the output of any integrity command you ran.
- Whether disconnecting hardware, restarting, troubleshooting, or Safe Mode changed the behavior.
Keep personal data and product keys out of public forums. Provide them only through the vendor’s verified support channel when requested.
