Error 0x00855E60 does not have a verified public Microsoft description in the Windows 10 or Windows 11 references checked. Treat the surrounding message and the place where it appeared as the real clue: record the complete text, note whether Windows Update, Setup, an app, or a crash displayed it, and look for a second code. Then follow the repair path for that context rather than applying an arbitrary “0x00855E60 fix.”
What error 0x00855E60 means
A hexadecimal value by itself is not enough to identify a Windows fault. The checked Microsoft references for Windows upgrade and installation, Windows Update, activation, and stop codes do not list 0x00855E60, and an exact-code search found no authoritative mapping. That means it would be misleading to label this number specifically as a Windows Update error, a blue-screen stop code, malware, or a disk failure.

The same-looking number can be displayed by Windows Setup, an update component, a third-party application, or an event generated during a restart. The useful evidence is the complete message and its context. Before changing settings, write down:

- Every word before and after 0x00855E60, including punctuation.
- Whether the computer restarted, showed a blue or black screen, or returned to the desktop.
- Whether Windows Update or a Windows 10/11 upgrade was running.
- Any second value, such as an HRESULT, setup result, extended code, or file name.
- The date and time, so you can match the event with logs.
Do not erase the message by immediately resetting Windows. A screenshot or phone photograph is useful if the machine will not stay on long enough to copy the text.

Choose the repair path from the symptom

If none of these descriptions fits, stop after collecting the evidence. A context-free code cannot support a reliable diagnosis.
When 0x00855E60 appears during a Windows upgrade or installation
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance says common installation errors can often be addressed with a short sequence of hardware, software, storage, and system-file checks. Work through these in order, and keep a current backup or recovery option before running repair commands.
1. Remove nonessential hardware
- Shut down the computer.
- Unplug printers, scanners, USB storage, external drives, card readers, docking accessories, and other devices that are not required to complete the installation.
- Undock a laptop. Leave only its power supply, display, keyboard, mouse, and network connection if needed.
- Restart the upgrade. Reconnect devices one at a time only after Windows is installed and stable.
External hardware can introduce a driver or setup conflict even when the device itself works normally in the existing Windows installation.

- Open Settings and select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates, install the offered updates, and restart when requested.
- Return to Windows Update until no further routine updates are offered.
- Install available updates for the computer’s hardware from the computer or component manufacturer’s supported channel. Avoid installing several unrelated driver packages at once; if the upgrade fails again, you need to know which change preceded it.
3. Remove incompatible security or obsolete software temporarily
Microsoft specifically calls out non-Microsoft antivirus products and obsolete software that may not be compatible with the target Windows release. Uninstall such software using its normal uninstaller before retrying, and restart afterward. Windows Security can provide basic protection while a third-party antivirus is absent. Reinstall a current, compatible security product only after the upgrade succeeds and the vendor supports the new Windows version.

4. Make enough room on the system drive
Check the free space on the drive that contains Windows, normally C:, in Settings > System > Storage or File Explorer. Microsoft lists 16 GB free for certain 32-bit upgrade cases and 20 GB for certain 64-bit cases; these are guidance figures, not a guarantee that every upgrade will fit. Close applications and remove or move personal files only after confirming you have a backup. Do not delete unfamiliar files from C:Windows or the installer folders manually.
5. Check the file system, then repair the Windows image
Use these commands only when you have confirmed that the code appeared during an upgrade or installation and you have a backup or recovery plan. Both require an elevated terminal.
- Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
chkdsk /f C:. If Windows says the volume is in use, accept the prompt to schedule the check for the next restart, then reboot and let it finish. - After Windows starts, open an elevated terminal again and run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. Wait for the operation to reach completion; interrupting it can leave the repair unfinished. - Restart and run Windows Update or Setup again.
CHKDSK checks and repairs file-system errors on the specified volume. DISM repairs the Windows component image used by system files; neither command identifies the unknown hexadecimal value on its own.
If the code appears with a crash, restart, blue screen, or black screen
Microsoft notes that an unexpected restart can be caused by hardware, a driver, or software. The following sequence narrows those possibilities without assuming that 0x00855E60 is a stop-code value.

1. Remove recently added hardware
Power off and disconnect hardware installed immediately before the failures began, such as a graphics card, memory module, USB adapter, printer, or storage device. If the computer is stable afterward, reconnect one item at a time. For internal components, use the manufacturer’s service instructions and disconnect power before opening the case.
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
- From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. If Windows cannot reach that screen, interrupt startup twice; Windows should enter the recovery environment on the next boot.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking when network access is necessary.
- Use Safe Mode to remove a recently installed driver or application, copy important files, and determine whether the restart still occurs.
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers. If the failure disappears there, a normal-startup driver, service, or application becomes more likely; it does not prove which one is responsible.
3. Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories that match the symptom, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a warning icon. Open the device’s Properties to read its status and error details.
- Use Update driver for a known-compatible driver, or choose Disable device temporarily to test whether the restart stops. Do not disable essential storage or boot devices unless you know how to restore them.
4. Check free space and install updates
Keep at least 10%–15% of the system drive free as Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting rule of thumb. Then install pending Windows updates and approved driver updates, restarting between major changes so you can identify the effect.
5. Use System Restore if the failures continue
- Open the recovery environment with Shift + Restart, then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the crashes began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers, confirm the restore, and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files, drivers, and installed programs but is not a substitute for backing up personal files. If no restore point exists, continue with hardware and driver diagnostics rather than creating one after the failure.

If an upgrade rolled back
A rollback is valuable because Setup usually leaves more diagnostic information than a transient pop-up. Before attempting the upgrade again, record the displayed result and any extended code exactly as shown.
Review Event Viewer
- Press Windows + R, type
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Check Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application for entries at the failure time.
- Open an entry to capture its source, event ID, level, and detailed text. Save the details before clearing any logs.
Check Setup logs
Upgrade troubleshooting commonly uses Setup logs, including setuperr.log. Search the Setup-related folders for that file and preserve a copy before running another attempt, because a new attempt can add more entries and make the original failure harder to isolate.
Run SetupDiag
Microsoft Learn recommends the free SetupDiag tool, which can automatically analyze many Windows upgrade failures. Run it after the rollback and read the result it produces; use the matching rule and extended code to decide what to change before retrying. SetupDiag can identify a likely failure pattern, but it does not make an unsupported code meaningful and it cannot repair every installation problem.

- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- Find the failed update, note its name, knowledge-base number if shown, installation date, and complete error text.
- Search Microsoft’s Windows Update error reference for that complete code, not just 0x00855E60.
- If the history entry contains a second code or a different result, use the second value as the primary diagnostic clue.
The Windows Update reference is organized around specific codes and mitigations. Because 0x00855E60 is not listed in the material checked, do not apply a generic update-database reset, registry edit, or script solely because the number looks familiar. If Update history reports a different code, troubleshoot that documented code instead.
How to preserve useful evidence
- Keep a screenshot of the original message and a text transcription.
- Record whether the issue is repeatable and the exact action that triggers it.
- Export or copy relevant Event Viewer entries before changing drivers or uninstalling software.
- For upgrades, retain Setup logs and the SetupDiag result from the failed attempt.
- Write down every hardware, driver, antivirus, or storage change made between attempts.
This record prevents a moving target: if the message changes after a driver update or hardware removal, the sequence shows which change mattered.
Windows 10 support and the decision to remain on it
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 installation may continue to boot after that date, but the end of support changes the security and maintenance context for troubleshooting. If an upgrade to Windows 11 is failing, preserve your files and investigate the specific rollback evidence rather than repeatedly retrying a blind upgrade. Check that the computer meets Windows 11 requirements and that the manufacturer supports its firmware and drivers. Remaining on an unsupported Windows 10 installation should be a deliberate, time-limited decision with an appropriate security and replacement plan.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the number is a blue-screen code. A hexadecimal string in an installer or app window is not automatically a stop code.
- Using a fix for a different error. Similar-looking codes can belong to unrelated components; match the complete message and context.
- Repeating an upgrade without preserving logs. The second attempt can overwrite or complicate evidence from the first rollback.
- Deleting system folders manually. Use supported cleanup and repair tools, and keep a backup.
- Changing several variables at once. Disconnect hardware, update, or remove incompatible software in a controlled sequence so the successful change is identifiable.
- Ignoring a second code. An HRESULT, event ID, or extended Setup result may be the only value with a documented remedy.
What to provide if you still need help
To obtain a meaningful diagnosis, provide the full error sentence, the application or Windows component that displayed it, whether the machine restarted, the Windows edition and version, the time of failure, any paired code, and the relevant Event Viewer or SetupDiag text. A bare “0x00855E60” cannot distinguish an installation problem from a driver failure or an application crash.
