A hexadecimal value by itself does not prove that the problem is a Windows system error, a driver fault, or malware. It may be produced by a device, installer, update component, game, printer utility, or another application.
The safest fix is therefore diagnostic: capture the complete message and its location first, identify your Windows build, then follow the branch for Device Manager, Windows Update, an installer, or a specific application. Do not edit the registry, replace hardware, or install a generic driver package solely because this number appeared.

What error 0x0084A78B means
Microsoft’s support article for Device Manager says its list does not contain every possible code. The Win32 system-error reference also covers values returned by the GetLastError function; it is not a universal catalog for every hexadecimal value displayed by Windows software. Because 0x0084A78B is absent from both references reviewed for this problem, its subsystem and cause cannot be determined from the digits alone.

That distinction matters. Applying a display-driver fix to a printer installer, or changing a registry value for an application-specific message, can remove useful evidence and create a second problem. Treat the number as an unidentified code until you know which component generated it.

Questions that identify the source
- What is the exact text before and after
0x0084A78B? - What is the dialog title or program name?
- Did it appear in Device Manager, Event Viewer, Windows Update, an installer, a game, printer software, or another application?
- Which device, account, file, update, or operation was affected?
- Did the message appear once, after every restart, or only during a particular action?
A screenshot can help, but also copy the text so punctuation, a secondary code, and the named component are preserved.
Capture evidence before changing Windows
Record the details while the message is visible. This creates a useful handoff for a hardware vendor, application publisher, or Microsoft Support and prevents an unrelated repair from obscuring the original failure.
Make a short incident record
- Write the full error message, including any file name, device name, status code, or suggested action.
- Record the window title and the application or Windows feature that displayed it.
- Note the exact time and what you were doing immediately before it appeared.
- Identify the affected device or software package, including its model or version if shown.
- Note whether the issue began after a Windows update, driver change, new peripheral, application update, or hardware move.
- Keep the original screenshot and copied text in a local folder so you can attach them later.
Do not remove the device, delete logs, or reinstall software before this record is complete unless the computer is unusable and you have no alternative.

Driver packages and vendor support instructions depend on the exact Windows release and system architecture. Microsoft documents the following built-in ways to identify them.
Use Settings
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Under Windows specifications, record Edition, Version, and OS build.
- Record the system type shown under device specifications, such as 64-bit operating system.
Use winver
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winverand press Enter. - Copy the version and build shown in the About Windows dialog.
Use System Information
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
msinfo32and press Enter. - In System Summary, record the OS name, version, system manufacturer, model, and system type.
Keep these values with the error record. They are especially important when a vendor offers separate packages for different Windows versions or architectures.

If the code appeared in Device Manager
Device Manager is the only context for which Microsoft provides a directly relevant troubleshooting sequence. First verify that the code is actually in the affected device’s status panel.
Read Device status
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the affected device.
- Double-click the device, or right-click it and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, read the Device status box in full.
- Copy the status text and any code shown there. A different code in this box is more useful than 0x0084A78B from an unrelated dialog.
Also note the device’s exact name and hardware category. Do not assume that an unidentified hexadecimal value is a driver error simply because a device is present in the computer.

- In the device’s Properties window, open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose the option that lets Windows search for an available driver, if it is offered.
- Restart the computer if Windows requests it.
- Return to the device’s status panel and check whether the original condition changed.
Record what Windows reports, even if it says the best driver is already installed. That result does not identify 0x0084A78B; it only records the outcome of this check.
Reinstall the device entry
If the status remains a device-related failure, Microsoft documents uninstalling the device and letting Windows detect it again.
- Open the device’s Properties window and select the Driver tab.
- Choose Uninstall Device and confirm the removal. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove driver software, read it carefully and do not select it unless you have a known replacement package.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager again.
- Select Action, then Scan for hardware changes.
- Check whether the device is recreated and whether its status text has changed.
If the device disappears or returns with a warning icon, capture the new status text before taking another action.

Get a package from the hardware manufacturer
When Windows cannot supply a suitable driver, Microsoft notes that the package may need to come from the hardware vendor. Use the vendor’s support page for the exact model, Windows edition, version, and architecture you recorded. Avoid selecting a similar-looking model or a package intended for a different operating system.
Download the package only from the manufacturer’s official support channel, keep the installer and release notes, and follow the vendor’s installation instructions. If the vendor offers several component packages, install only the one that matches the device named in Device Manager. If the installation fails, preserve its complete message and log rather than trying random packages.
If the code appeared in Windows Update
The hexadecimal value alone does not establish that Windows Update generated it. First open the update interface and identify the operation that failed.
- Open Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Read the complete failure message and open Update history if it identifies a particular update or installation attempt.
- Record the update name, KB number if shown, date, and the full text surrounding 0x0084A78B.
Microsoft’s Win32 reference points readers to separate resources for subsystems such as Windows Update, so do not treat the Win32 table as an explanation for this value. If the update page provides a more specific code or package name, use that information when contacting Microsoft Support. If it only repeats 0x0084A78B, report the complete text and your Windows build rather than applying a Device Manager procedure to an update problem.
If an installer, game, printer utility, or other app displayed it
An application can show a hexadecimal value that is meaningful only to its own installer or service. The application name and operation are therefore more important than the number.

Collect application-specific details
- Copy the application name and version from its About window or installer screen.
- Record whether the failure occurs during download, installation, launch, printing, sign-in, or a particular task.
- Note the exact file, printer model, game title, or service named in the message.
- Check the application’s own log or setup log if the interface provides one, and save the entries covering the failure time.
Use the publisher’s support instructions for that exact version and product. Include the full message, Windows build, affected model or file, and relevant log entries. Do not substitute a generic driver, registry edit, or system reset when the application publisher has not identified the code.

Event Viewer can show a companion event even when the dialog contains only an unfamiliar number. It does not automatically decode 0x0084A78B, but it can establish which component logged the failure.
- Press Windows key + R, type
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Open Windows Logs and inspect Application and System around the time of the failure.
- For a device issue, also inspect Applications and Services Logs for a provider whose name matches the device or driver.
- Select an event at the matching time and read the General and Details tabs.
- Use Save Selected Events to preserve the event file, or copy the complete text for support.
When sharing logs, remove personal file paths, account names, network names, or other information that the recipient does not need.
Decide whether the evidence points to a driver, hardware, or software cause

This is an evidence-routing table, not a diagnosis. The same number could be emitted by different products, so do not infer a hardware replacement or driver rollback from the code alone.

Actions to avoid while the source is unknown
- Registry edits: no authoritative source reviewed for this code identifies a registry value to change.
- Random driver packages: an incorrect package can introduce a new failure and make the original state harder to reproduce.
- Automatic reset or reinstallation: resetting Windows can remove applications and settings without addressing an application-specific code.
- Unnecessary hardware purchases: the value does not identify a failed cable, adapter, printer, storage device, or replacement part.
- Disabling security controls: do not turn off protection or run an unknown executable merely because an installer reports this number.
Only take a broader action after the responsible vendor or a clearly identified Windows component documents it for your exact message and build.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 support scope
The Device Manager procedure above applies to both Windows 11 and Windows 10. Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 under its stated support policy. This lifecycle status is dated information and may change, so verify the current policy when planning a migration or support request.
Support end-of-life does not explain 0x0084A78B and does not make the code a Windows 10-only problem. It does mean that a Windows 10 machine may not receive a new Microsoft fix even after the generating component has been identified.
How to escalate an unlisted code
Microsoft explicitly advises contacting the hardware device vendor or Microsoft Support when a Device Manager code is not listed. The same evidence package is useful when the value came from another component.
Include these items
- The exact hexadecimal value and complete surrounding message.
- A screenshot and the copied text.
- The dialog title, application or Windows feature, and the action that triggered it.
- Device model, printer model, application name and version, or update identifier.
- Windows edition, version, OS build, and system type.
- Device Manager status text, Event Viewer entries, or setup logs covering the failure.
- A timeline of any recent update, driver installation, peripheral change, or application change.
- The manual steps already attempted and their exact results.
Ask the recipient whether 0x0084A78B belongs to that product’s error catalog and request a remedy for the identified version. If they cannot identify the source, ask what additional log or diagnostic they need rather than applying an unrelated fix.
