Error 0x00836450 does not have a definitive Microsoft decoding in the available documentation. It is best treated as a conditional Windows system or configuration fault, not as proof that one particular component has failed. Invalid system entries, an interrupted software installation or removal, malware, an improper shutdown, or deleted system data can all be associated with this type of message.

Start with Microsoft’s built-in repair sequence: run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth from an elevated Command Prompt, then run sfc /scannow. DISM must come first. The SFC result tells you whether protected Windows files were repaired or whether you need to investigate logs and move to recovery options.

What error 0x00836450 means

The hexadecimal value alone does not identify a confirmed failing file, service, driver, or hardware component. No authoritative Microsoft explanation in the available material decodes 0x00836450 specifically. Descriptions that call it a generic Windows system or configuration fault are useful for choosing safe diagnostics, but they are not a diagnosis of your individual PC.

The message may appear after an interrupted application install or uninstall, an improper shutdown, invalid system entries, accidental deletion of system data, or malware-related damage. Those are possible causes, not a list of things that definitely happened. Note exactly when the message appears—during startup, Windows Update, an application launch, or a particular setting change—because that timing determines which follow-up check is most relevant.

Prepare before changing system files

  • Sign in with an administrator account, or have administrator credentials available. DISM and SFC cannot make their repairs from a standard, unelevated Command Prompt.
  • Save open work and, if Windows is still usable, copy important personal files to another drive or cloud location before attempting recovery or reinstallation.
  • Write down the action that triggers the code and any other text in the dialog. A repeatable trigger is valuable when you review logs or contact support.
  • Do not start by deleting registry entries, replacing protected files manually, or running a registry cleaner. Those actions can remove information that Windows needs and make later diagnosis harder.

Run DISM, then SFC

Microsoft’s documented order matters: DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source, so run DISM first and wait for it to finish before starting SFC.

1. Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt. The window title should indicate that it has administrator rights.

2. Run the DISM repair

At the prompt, enter this command exactly and press Enter:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

The /Online option targets the Windows installation that is currently running. /Cleanup-image checks the component store, and /Restorehealth asks DISM to repair corruption it finds. Microsoft notes that the operation can take several minutes. Progress may appear to pause for a while; do not close the window merely because the percentage has not changed immediately.

When DISM reports completion, read the final status. A successful completion means the command finished its repair operation; it does not by itself prove that the original error is gone. Restart Windows if the command requests it, then continue with SFC.

3. Run System File Checker

In the same administrator Command Prompt, run:

sfc /scannow

SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted copies with cached copies when a valid replacement is available. Let verification reach 100 percent. Closing the window early can leave the scan incomplete and gives you no reliable result.

4. Act on the SFC result

SFC message or situation What it establishes Next action
“Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” SFC did not find corruption in the protected files it checked. Restart if you have not already done so, then repeat the action that produced 0x00836450. If the code returns, continue with the diagnostic sections below; the result does not rule out configuration, update, application, or disk problems.
SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files. At least some protected files were replaced successfully. Restart Windows and retry the action that triggered the error. Record whether the behavior changed.
SFC says it found corrupted files but could not repair some of them. Windows still has unresolved protected-file corruption. Review the detailed SFC output and the CBS log, then consider the recovery options described later. Re-running the same command without examining the failure usually adds little information.
The scan cannot complete or the Command Prompt reports an error. The repair process itself needs investigation; the original code has not been resolved. Record the complete message, check whether DISM completed, and move to the source-media and disk checks below.

Microsoft’s quoted description is precise: “The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files and replace corrupted files with a cached copy of that file.” That replacement is limited to files SFC can identify and repair; it is not a general fix for every Windows configuration problem.

When DISM cannot find repair files

DISM normally obtains required repair files through Windows Update. If it reports that source files could not be found, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation as an alternate source. This can be Windows installation media, a Windows DVD, or removable installation media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a matching source

  • Match the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and build as closely as possible. A source that belongs to a different edition or substantially different build may not contain the files your installation requires.
  • Identify the drive letter or folder path of the installation source after connecting the media. Drive letters can change between normal Windows and recovery environments.
  • Use the source and prevent DISM from contacting Windows Update by adding /Source:<path> /LimitAccess to the repair command.

The resulting form is:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<path> /LimitAccess

Replace <path> with the path to the compatible repair source. The source concept is documented by Microsoft, but not every arbitrary USB drive will work. If the media does not match the installed edition, language, architecture, or build, stop rather than forcing files from an unsuitable installation.

After DISM completes successfully with the alternate source, run sfc /scannow again. SFC should still be run after DISM because the two commands perform different checks.

Check Windows Update and the disk when the trigger points there

If 0x00836450 appears while Windows is downloading or installing updates, use the Windows Update troubleshooting path before repeating the update indefinitely. Microsoft also lists checking the system disk with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

chkdsk /f C:

The /f switch asks CHKDSK to fix file-system errors. Because the system volume may be in use, Windows can schedule the check for the next restart. Read the prompt and allow the restart only after saving work. Do not interpret a clean disk check as proof that the Windows component store or protected files are healthy; it answers a different question.

Use a clean restart for software conflicts

A clean restart is useful when the code appears only after Windows starts normally or when a third-party service or startup program may be interfering with an update. In a clean-restart configuration, non-Microsoft services and startup items are temporarily disabled, Windows is restarted, and the failing action is tested again. If the error disappears, re-enable disabled items in groups until the conflict is isolated. Restore normal startup settings after testing; a clean restart is a diagnostic state, not a permanent performance recommendation.

Review logs when SFC cannot repair files

When SFC reports unrepaired corruption, inspect the detailed SFC output and the Component Based Servicing (CBS) log rather than guessing which file to replace. The CBS log records servicing activity, while the SFC details identify entries associated with the scan. Preserve a copy of the relevant text before making further changes so that Microsoft Support or another qualified technician can see the original failure.

  • Capture the exact SFC summary and any error text from the administrator window.
  • Note the date and time of the scan, the DISM result, and whether the computer was restarted.
  • Look for repeated failures rather than treating one unfamiliar filename as the root cause.
  • Do not download a replacement system file from an unverified website or overwrite a protected file manually.

If the logs show that a required source is missing, return to the matching installation-media procedure. If they show persistent servicing failures without a usable source, recovery or reinstallation is safer than repeated ad hoc file replacement.

Recovery and escalation when the code persists

If DISM, SFC, an appropriate repair source, and the relevant disk or clean-restart check do not change the behavior, Windows recovery or reinstallation options may be necessary. Choose the least disruptive option that addresses the evidence you have, and back up personal files first.

Windows recovery environment

Use Windows Recovery options when normal startup or the desktop is unstable. Recovery tools can give you a controlled environment in which to run repairs, troubleshoot startup, or begin a reset or reinstallation. The exact choices shown depend on the Windows edition and the condition of the installation.

Reset or reinstall Windows

A reset or reinstallation replaces damaged Windows components when servicing cannot restore them. Read each screen carefully because some choices remove applications or personal data. Verify that you have installation media, account access, application installers, and backups before proceeding. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, follow that organization’s recovery process instead of wiping it independently.

Contact Microsoft Support

Escalate to Microsoft Support when the error blocks normal use, recovery cannot complete, or logs show repeated servicing failures. Provide the exact code, Windows version and edition, the action that triggers it, DISM and SFC summaries, CBS/SFC log excerpts, and any recent installation or shutdown event. This information is more useful than reporting only the hexadecimal value.

Which repair method should you choose?

Method Source authority Cost Administrator access Main risk Reversibility and file impact
DISM followed by SFC Directly documented by Microsoft Built into Windows Required Using incorrect options or interrupting the operation Targets Windows components and protected files; results can be reviewed through command output and logs
DISM with matching installation media Documented Microsoft alternate-source procedure Requires suitable Windows media Required Mismatched edition, language, architecture, or build Repairs from the specified source; verify the source before running the command
Disk check with chkdsk /f C: Included in Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guidance for relevant cases Built into Windows Required Unexpected restart or misunderstanding a disk result Changes file-system metadata to correct errors; it does not repair every Windows component
Clean restart Microsoft troubleshooting approach for update-related conflicts Built into Windows Usually required to change services and startup settings Leaving diagnostic settings disabled after testing Reversible when normal startup settings are restored
Third-party repair utility Vendor-controlled rather than Microsoft’s built-in servicing process Commercial terms vary Often required for system changes Unclear diagnosis, unsuitable changes, or a mismatch between the utility and the failure Review its scope and logs; no utility repairs every crash or replaces a backup

Built-in DISM and SFC are the sensible first choice because Microsoft documents their order, commands, and interpretation. Installation media is a targeted next step when Windows Update cannot supply valid repair files. Other utilities should be considered only after you understand what the built-in results show.

Common mistakes that make 0x00836450 harder to fix

Running SFC before DISM

SFC may depend on the component store that DISM repairs. If you already ran SFC first, run DISM now and then repeat SFC so the result reflects the repaired source.

Using a normal Command Prompt

Without elevation, the commands may fail or be unable to change protected components. Close the window and reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator.

Stopping a scan because progress appears slow

DISM can take several minutes, and SFC must reach 100 percent. Interrupting either operation removes the result you need and can leave the repair incomplete.

Assuming the code proves malware

Malware is one possible cause listed in the generic description, but the code itself is not proof of malware. Avoid deleting files or changing security settings based solely on this number.

Forcing an unverified installation source

Do not point DISM at random media. Match edition, language, architecture, and build as closely as possible, and use the alternate-source form only when you have identified a suitable path.

Repeating commands without recording results

Keep the final DISM and SFC messages, the trigger that produced the error, and any log excerpts. A clear timeline prevents support staff from having to repeat every diagnostic step.
