This information determines which troubleshooting branch is appropriate. Do not delete registry entries, replace system files, or download a “fix” for the number alone.
First checks that apply to every situation
Restart and preserve your work
Save open documents, close applications, and restart Windows normally. A restart can complete a pending update or release a file that was in use. If the computer is repeatedly restarting, skip repeated normal boots and use the Safe Mode procedure below.
Confirm your Windows edition and build
Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. Note whether the computer runs Windows 11 or Windows 10 and record the version and build shown. Navigation labels differ between the two versions, and Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. A device still running Windows 10 may continue to operate, but it no longer receives Microsoft support updates after that date unless it is covered by a separate support arrangement.

Shut down the computer and unplug recently added hardware first. During an installation or update, disconnect nonessential printers, scanners, USB drives, external disks, docking stations, and similar peripherals. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and any hardware required to boot. Retry the operation before reconnecting devices one at a time.

Check available storage
Windows and applications need working space for swap files, temporary files, and update operations. In File Explorer, open This PC and check the system drive. If it is nearly full, remove or move files you recognize, empty the Recycle Bin, and uninstall unused applications through Windows Settings. Do not remove folders merely because their names look unfamiliar. Restart after freeing space, then retry the operation.

Fix it when 0x0080D49B appears during Windows Update
1. Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft states that the Update Troubleshooter can help when an error code appears while downloading or installing Windows updates. Use the path for your edition:
- Windows 11: Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update and select Run. On current Windows 11 releases, the Get Help troubleshooter may open instead; follow its prompts.
- Windows 10: Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Allow the tool to apply the corrections it reports. Restart Windows even if it says that no changes were required.
- Open the Windows Update page again and select Check for updates. Let the download and installation finish without shutting down the computer.
2. Install every pending update
If Windows offers more than one update, install the available updates in the order Windows presents them and restart whenever prompted. A partially installed servicing update can prevent a later update from completing. Check again after the restart rather than assuming the first successful installation made the system fully current.

If the troubleshooter does not help, power down and remove the nonessential equipment listed in the first-check section. External storage, printers, scanners, and docking hardware can introduce drivers or interruptions during setup. Retry the update with only essential input and display devices attached.

4. Check storage before another attempt
Verify that the system drive has usable free space. Windows needs room not only for the update package but also for temporary files and swap operations. If space is tight, move personal media to another location and remove only files and applications you can identify safely. Restart and run Windows Update again.
5. Stop repeating the same failed attempt
If the code returns after the troubleshooter, a restart, current updates, free storage, and disconnected peripherals, record the complete message and the update name or number shown on screen. That record is more useful to Microsoft or the computer manufacturer than the hexadecimal value by itself. Avoid manually replacing Windows components or using registry-cleaning instructions that are not part of Microsoft’s guidance.
Fix it when the message appears during Windows activation
Activation failures follow a different support path from update and crash failures. Start by confirming that the message is actually on an activation page rather than an update or application dialog.
- Windows 11: Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Windows 10: Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Read the complete activation status and any accompanying text. Follow Microsoft’s activation-error guidance for the displayed status, edition, and license type.
- Confirm that the installed Windows edition matches the license supplied with the computer or purchased for it. An edition mismatch cannot be corrected by repeating an update troubleshooter.
- Connect the computer to the internet, make sure the system date and time are correct, and restart before trying activation again.
If the computer was sold with Windows preinstalled and still will not activate after the Microsoft activation steps, contact the manufacturer. The manufacturer can verify the device’s firmware-embedded or supplied license and determine whether the issue is specific to that machine. Do not publish or share a product key in a support forum.

Fix it when Windows crashes, freezes, or restarts
1. Enter Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. It helps distinguish a basic Windows problem from a recently installed driver or startup component.
- From the sign-in screen or Start menu, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the options appear, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode. Choose 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking only when you need network access.
- Sign in and check whether the crash or message occurs again. If Windows cannot reach this menu, interrupt startup two or three times to enter the Windows Recovery Environment, then follow the same path.
2. Inspect Device Manager
In Safe Mode, right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand the device categories and look for a warning icon. Pay particular attention to hardware installed or updated just before the failures began.
- Use Update driver when a suitable update is available through Windows.
- Use Disable device temporarily when you need to test whether that device is involved.
- Use Uninstall device only when you are prepared to restart and let Windows redetect it, or when the manufacturer’s instructions specifically call for removal.
Record the device name and driver version before changing it. If disabling or uninstalling a device makes the problem worse, return to Device Manager in Safe Mode and re-enable or roll back the change when that option is available.
3. Restart normally and test one change at a time
Restart Windows normally after each driver change. Test the exact action that previously produced 0x0080D49B. Changing several drivers or services at once makes it impossible to tell which change helped and can create a second problem.
4. Remove the newest hardware if the crash persists
Shut down again and remove newly installed internal or external hardware where practical. Microsoft’s stop-code guidance recommends removing new hardware when crashes begin after an installation. If the computer becomes stable, reconnect one device at a time and test between connections.
Use Windows recovery when basic troubleshooting fails
Recovery tools are appropriate when the error recurs, normal startup is unreliable, or a recent change clearly preceded the failure. Back up important personal files before making a recovery change if Windows still starts.
System Restore
- Open the Windows Recovery Environment with Shift + Restart, or use Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11 and the corresponding recovery controls in Windows 10.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failures began, review the affected programs and drivers, and confirm only if the date and changes make sense.
- Allow the process to finish without powering off the computer. Test Windows after it restarts.
System Restore is intended to reverse system changes; it is not a way to identify an undocumented error code. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the recovery menu and use another Microsoft-documented recovery option rather than selecting a random point.
Other recovery options
Windows Recovery Environment also provides tools such as Startup Repair and update-removal options, depending on the edition and the condition of the installation. Read each description before confirming. A reset or reinstall is a later measure that requires a current backup and a plan for reinstalling applications; do not start one merely because a hexadecimal code looks unfamiliar.
When to seek manufacturer or Microsoft help
Escalate when the message survives the correct branch, Safe Mode, hardware removal, current updates, and recovery attempts; when the computer cannot stay powered on long enough to troubleshoot; or when activation fails on a device sold with Windows preinstalled. Provide support with the exact message, a photo or transcription of the screen, the Windows edition and build from winver, the application or Settings page involved, the date the problem began, recent hardware or software changes, and the steps already completed.
Because 0x0080D49B is not identified in the published Microsoft material described above, support may need the surrounding message or an installer, update, or application log to classify it. Do not omit that surrounding text when reporting the problem.
