Error 0x0080A07A is not identified in Microsoft’s published Windows Update error-code table. The code by itself is therefore not enough to determine a cause or a safe, specific fix. It may be application-specific, vendor-specific, or copied incorrectly. First identify the program and operation that displayed it; then use the matching repair path below. Do not install a registry cleaner or generic “error fixer” solely because this code appeared.
What error 0x0080A07A means
Microsoft documents many Windows Update and setup codes, including 0x8007000d, 0x800705b4, 0x80240034, 0x800f0922, 0x80070057, 0xC1900101, 0x80248014, 0x80070005 and 0x80070002. The published table does not list 0x0080A07A. That omission matters: there is no Microsoft-defined cause that can be inferred from this hexadecimal value alone.

A code in this format can come from a particular installer, security product, game, device utility, sign-in component or other vendor program. It can also be a transcription error: a leading zero, a missing character, or a second code in the same dialog may change the diagnosis completely. Treat the surrounding message and the named program as the primary evidence.
Is it a Windows Update error?
Not necessarily. It is a Windows Update problem only when the code is shown by Windows Update, an upgrade assistant, Windows Setup, or a related update log. If it appears inside another application, apply that application’s repair or support procedure instead of repeatedly resetting Windows Update.

Is the code dangerous?
The number itself is not evidence of malware, data theft or hardware failure. It is an error identifier. The risk depends on what was running when it appeared and whether the computer has other symptoms, such as repeated crashes, failed updates or a damaged application. Preserve the complete message before dismissing it.
Identify the source before changing Windows
Write down the details below. They determine which procedure is relevant and prevent destructive, irrelevant repairs.
- Copy the complete dialog text, including its title bar, program name, decimal or secondary code, and any file name.
- Record what was happening: downloading an update, installing an update, upgrading Windows, signing in, printing, connecting to a network, launching a game, or running another application.
- Note the date and exact time, Windows edition (Windows 10 or Windows 11), and whether the failure repeats after a restart.
- Take a screenshot if the dialog may disappear, but do not post personal paths, product keys or account information publicly.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows+X and choose Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs, then inspect Application and System.
- Choose Filter Current Log…, set the time range around the failure, and look for Error or Warning entries from the same program or service.
- Open a matching event and record the Source, Event ID, faulting module, and message. These details are more useful than the hexadecimal code alone.
For an update or upgrade failure, preserve the available Windows Update, Component-Based Servicing (CBS), or Windows Setup logs before clearing caches. The log may reveal a different, actionable code.

If 0x0080A07A appeared during Windows Update
Use this path only when Windows Update or an upgrade process displayed the code. Microsoft’s general troubleshooting sequence starts with basic conditions, then repairs the update cache and system components.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update and choose Run. Apply any recommended action and restart.
- In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.
Run the troubleshooter while signed in to an administrator account. Confirm that the internet connection is working and that the device is not behind a captive portal or a disconnected VPN.
2. Remove update obstacles
- Disconnect unnecessary USB storage, docks, printers, cameras and other external hardware. Leave essential input devices and network equipment connected.
- Enable automatic date and time. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time; in Windows 10, go to Settings > Time & Language > Date & time. Turn on automatic time and select Sync now where available.
- Install current drivers supplied by the hardware manufacturer, especially for storage, chipset and network devices. A driver problem can interrupt an update even when the displayed code does not identify the driver.
- Check free space in Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10). Microsoft states that an upgrade needs at least 16 GB free on a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB on a 64-bit operating system. An update may require additional working space, so do not aim to have only the bare minimum.
3. Restart the update services and cache
Corrupt files in the update cache can cause errors. This procedure renames the cache folders so Windows can create fresh ones; it does not delete your personal files.

- Open Command Prompt as administrator: search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run each command separately and wait for the confirmation before entering the next one:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptSvc
ren %windir%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %windir%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start wuauservIf a service reports that it is not running, continue with the remaining commands. If a rename reports that the folder is in use, restart Windows, open an elevated Command Prompt again, and repeat the sequence before opening Windows Update. Restart after the commands complete, then check for updates.

4. Repair the component store and system files
Run these commands from an elevated Command Prompt when logs or repeated failures suggest damaged Windows files. DISM repairs the component store; System File Checker (SFC) checks protected system files against that store.
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannowLet each command reach 100 percent. “No integrity violations” means SFC found no protected-file problem; a repair message means it changed files. Restart Windows after both commands and retry the update. If DISM cannot obtain repair files, note the exact message rather than repeatedly running the same command; the update source or servicing environment may need attention.

5. Check the disk only when evidence points to it
Unexpected shutdowns, I/O errors in Event Viewer, or repeated file-corruption messages justify a disk check. Back up important data first, then run this command in an elevated Command Prompt:
chkdsk C: /fWindows will normally ask to schedule the check for the next restart because the system volume is in use. Accept the schedule and allow the scan to finish. Do not interrupt it. A disk check cannot repair a physically failing drive; hardware diagnostics or replacement may be required if errors return.

Use the Windows Update steps above for space, time, drivers, external hardware and system-file health, but preserve setup-specific evidence before resetting caches. Look for the setup log entries created at the time of failure and record the phase (for example, download, installation, first reboot or migration). A setup log may identify a driver, application, boot configuration or compatibility block that 0x0080A07A does not reveal.
Disconnect nonessential peripherals, uninstall software that the setup log explicitly identifies as incompatible, and retry after a clean restart. Do not remove random drivers or registry entries merely because the hexadecimal code looks unfamiliar. If the upgrade fails at the same percentage every time, the repeatable phase and the named component are more valuable clues than the code.
If another application displayed the code
When the dialog belongs to a game, printer utility, VPN, security product, installer or business application, Windows Update resets are unlikely to help. Use this decision path:
- Open the application’s own log or diagnostics page and record the timestamp, module name and secondary error.
- Restart Windows and reproduce the action once. Note whether the failure occurs only for one user account, one file, one device or every launch.
- Install the application’s current update from its legitimate vendor channel. If the vendor provides a repair or verify option, use that before reinstalling.
- Check Event Viewer for an application error at the same time. A faulting DLL, access-denied event or service timeout can identify the actual failing component.
- Temporarily remove recently added plug-ins, overlays or extensions one at a time, recording each change so it can be reversed.
If the program is essential, provide its vendor with the complete message, version, Windows build, timestamp and relevant log excerpt. Do not send passwords, license keys or unrelated personal data.
Use the evidence to choose the next repair

This comparison prevents a common mistake: applying a Windows Update fix to an unrelated application or replacing hardware before a log identifies it.
What not to do
- Do not assume the code proves a virus, a bad hard drive or a defective driver.
- Do not download a “registry cleaner,” “error fixer” or replacement DLL from an unknown site based only on 0x0080A07A.
- Do not delete Windows folders while services are running. Use the documented stop, rename and restart sequence instead.
- Do not repeatedly force shutdown during an update, DISM, SFC or CHKDSK operation.
- Do not publish complete logs containing usernames, email addresses, product keys or network details.
When the code still returns
After the relevant procedure, compare a new failure with the original record. If the program, phase, Event Viewer source and secondary code are identical, the problem is repeatable and should be escalated with those details. If only the hexadecimal value is the same but the program or phase changed, you may be seeing unrelated errors that happen to share a display format.
For Windows Update, keep the Windows Update, CBS or setup logs from the latest attempt and include the Windows edition, whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, available disk space, connected hardware and the results of DISM and SFC. For an application, include its version, reproduction steps and the faulting module. This evidence lets support distinguish a cache problem from component corruption, a compatibility block or an application defect.
