What error 0x008070B6 means
No authoritative Microsoft reference currently maps 0x008070B6 to a named Windows subsystem or a single remedy. An identical-looking hexadecimal value can be displayed by an update component, an installer, a recovery process, or another application. The code alone therefore cannot tell you whether the problem is caused by Windows Update, an upgrade, damaged system files, a disk problem, permissions, or a conflicting startup program.

Read the entire message around the code. Note whether it appeared while downloading an update, installing an update, upgrading Windows, installing an application, starting a program, or performing recovery. Also record the window title, the action immediately before the failure, and whether Windows offered a retry, rollback or restart option. Those details determine which branch of the procedure is relevant.

Do not classify the code by its appearance
Hexadecimal numbers beginning with 0x are not, by themselves, proof of malware, an activation problem, a failed hard drive or a Windows Update failure. Treat online claims that assign a precise cause to this exact value cautiously unless they identify the same trigger and provide authoritative documentation. The safe approach is to troubleshoot the operation that actually failed.
Identify the trigger before changing Windows
Capture the information below while the message is still visible. A screenshot is useful, but also write the text down because an event or update-history entry may use different wording.
- The full error message, including any file name, package name or secondary code.
- The exact operation: checking for updates, downloading, installing, restarting, upgrading, installing an application, or launching a program.
- The app or Windows component that displayed the message.
- The date and time, whether the failure repeats, and what changed immediately beforehand.
- Your Windows edition and build. Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and record the version and build shown. - Whether the computer is managed by an employer or school, because policy restrictions can prevent repair steps or updates.
Do not delete update history, reset services, or remove system folders before recording this information. If the code disappears after a restart, the notes may be the only way to identify the original trigger.

Fix a Windows Update failure
Windows 11: run the automated troubleshooter
Windows 11 can launch Microsoft’s automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Start, search for Get Help, and describe the Windows Update problem when prompted. Follow the checks it presents and allow it to apply a recommended repair. If the Get Help workflow is unavailable or does not resolve the issue, use the settings path below.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Complete the questions and allow the troubleshooter to finish.
- Restart the computer.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Write down any problem the troubleshooter reports instead of closing the result without reading it. If the same code returns, record whether it appears while checking, downloading or installing; that distinction is useful for escalation.
Windows 10: use the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Start > Settings.
- Choose Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply the suggested action, then restart.
- Open Windows Update and select Check for updates to test the result.
These steps are still available on Windows 10, but support status matters. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; after that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for the operating system. A successful troubleshooting run cannot restore support or create new updates that Microsoft has stopped publishing.
Repair the Windows image and system files
If the troubleshooter does not resolve an update-related failure, Microsoft’s documented repair order is DISM followed by System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows image that supplies system components; SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired image.

Run DISM as administrator
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command exactly, then press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - Wait for the operation to reach completion. Do not close the window merely because progress appears to pause.
Keep the final DISM message. A completion message means the command finished; it does not, by itself, prove that the original 0x008070B6 trigger has been identified.

Run SFC after DISM
- In the same elevated Command Prompt window, enter:
sfc /scannow - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent and the command displays its result.
- Record whether Windows reports that it found and repaired files, found files it could not repair, or found no integrity violations.
- Restart if Windows requests it, then retry the exact operation that produced the code.
Run SFC after DISM, not before, so that SFC has the repaired component store available. If either command stops with an error, preserve the wording and the time of the failure rather than repeatedly interrupting it.
Check the disk and isolate startup conflicts
Check the system volume
Microsoft also documents a disk check when an update installation is blocked or file-system problems are suspected. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
chkdsk /f C:
The /f switch asks Windows to correct file-system errors on the C: volume. Because the system volume may be in use, Windows can ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Accept that schedule only after saving open work, then allow the check to complete. Record the result that appears after the scan and test the original operation again.
Use a clean restart to test third-party conflicts
A clean restart starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It is a diagnostic test, not a permanent configuration. If the error disappears in a clean environment, a startup service or application is a likely contributor; if it remains, that result makes a startup conflict less likely.

- Press
Win+R, entermsconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services. Do not disable Microsoft services indiscriminately.
- Use the remaining controls to disable non-Microsoft services, then open Task Manager from the Startup tab and disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart and repeat the operation that produced 0x008070B6.
- After testing, return to System Configuration and restore normal startup. Re-enable items in small groups if you need to identify a conflict.
If the computer is managed, security software or policy may prevent these changes. Ask the administrator before disabling a service. A clean restart should not be used as a reason to leave protection or business-management components disabled indefinitely.

An error during setup is a different branch from an ordinary Windows Update failure. The setup screen, phase and rollback text are important evidence. Before retrying:
- Disconnect nonessential external hardware such as removable drives, docks, printers and other USB devices. Leave only the keyboard, mouse and hardware required to operate the computer.
- Confirm that the account running setup has the permissions it needs and that there is no pending restart from another installation.
- Temporarily consider whether third-party antivirus or security software is interfering with setup. Follow the product’s documented pause or removal procedure only if necessary, and restore protection immediately after the test.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter using the Windows 11 or Windows 10 path above if the upgrade obtains files through Windows Update.
- Retry the upgrade and note the exact stage at which it fails. A code shown during downloading is not equivalent evidence to the same code shown during the first restart or rollback.
Do not infer that generic installation media will fix this particular code. The available evidence does not establish that 0x008070B6 belongs to a media, recovery or activation subsystem, so choose recovery media only when the setup message and Microsoft’s guidance specifically call for it.
Common mistakes that make the diagnosis harder
Repeating a generic fix without recording the trigger
Running commands at random can change the system without explaining the failure. Keep a short timeline: original action, restart, troubleshooter result, DISM result, SFC result, disk-check result and the exact point at which the code returns.
Using an elevated window incorrectly
DISM, SFC and disk checking need an administrator Command Prompt. If the title bar does not indicate an elevated window or Windows rejects the command, close it and start Command Prompt with Run as administrator. Copy commands exactly, including spaces and the leading slash characters.
Stopping a scan because progress appears slow
System-image repair, file verification and disk checking can take time. Interrupting them can leave the operation incomplete and removes useful evidence. Wait for a final status message unless the computer is clearly unresponsive and you have no other option.
Leaving a clean-start configuration in place
A clean restart is temporary troubleshooting. Restore normal startup after the test so that required services, update agents and security controls load normally. If re-enabling everything at once brings the problem back, use small groups to identify the conflicting item.

Windows 10 reached its Microsoft support end date on October 14, 2025. If the machine is still on Windows 10, distinguish a repairable local failure from the absence of a newly published update. Your edition, licensing and hardware determine whether an upgrade path is available; the error code alone does not answer that question.
When to stop troubleshooting and escalate
Contact Microsoft Support or the administrator responsible for the device when the code persists after the relevant steps, when setup repeatedly rolls back, or when DISM, SFC or disk checking reports an unresolved problem. Provide a compact evidence package:
- A screenshot and transcription of the complete 0x008070B6 message.
- The operation and exact stage that triggered it.
- The Windows edition, version and build from
winver. - The Windows Update history entry or setup rollback information, including date and time.
- The final messages from the troubleshooter, DISM, SFC and
chkdsk, if you ran them. - Whether disconnecting external hardware, using a clean restart or temporarily addressing a third-party security conflict changed the result.
This evidence lets support identify the owning component instead of guessing from an unmapped hexadecimal value. Do not describe the code as an activation, storage, malware or update error unless the full message and operation support that conclusion.
