What error 0x00806B24 means
There is no confirmed, universal Windows definition for 0x00806B24. Microsoft’s current support material for Windows 10 and Windows 11 does not list this code in its Windows Update, upgrade, installation or activation troubleshooting tables. That means the code alone cannot tell you whether the problem is an update, a license, a damaged system file, an installer, or an application failure.
An exact-code search also turns up an unrelated 2012 NBA2K12 PSP cheat-code page where the value is used as a memory address. That result is not a Windows diagnosis and does not explain an error on a PC. It does, however, show why searching only the hexadecimal number can mislead you.

The code by itself is not proof that your computer is infected or unsafe. Treat it as an unidentified diagnostic value until you identify its source. Do not download a “0x00806B24 repair” from an unknown site, replace system files, or edit the registry solely because a page claims to recognize the number.
Identify exactly where the code appeared
Before changing settings, preserve the evidence. Write down or photograph the whole dialog, including text before and after the hexadecimal value. Note whether the prefix is exactly 0x, whether all eight digits are present, and whether a second code such as an HRESULT appears. Record:
- The screen or program showing the message: Windows Update, Activation, Windows Setup, a driver installer, a game, or another application.
- The action immediately before the error: checking for updates, installing an update, entering a product key, upgrading Windows, launching a program, or installing software.
- Your Windows edition and build. Press
Windows key + R, typewinver, and press Enter. Save the version and OS build shown. - The application name and version, if a program other than Windows displayed the dialog.
- Whether restarting changes the symptom, and whether the same message appears every time.
A screenshot is especially useful when the code was copied from a short notification. A missing digit, a zero read as the letter “O,” or a code copied without its accompanying HRESULT can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.

If it appeared in Windows Update
Microsoft says that an error code received while downloading and installing Windows updates can often be addressed with the Update Troubleshooter. Windows 11 offers an automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app. You can also start it manually through Settings.
Windows 11: run Windows Update Troubleshooter
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the checks shown by Windows. Allow the troubleshooter to apply a suggested correction when it identifies one.
- Restart the PC, open Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
If Windows launches the Get Help version instead, complete that guided session and restart before trying the update again. Keep the original screenshot and the troubleshooter’s result; they are useful if you need support.
Windows 10: run Windows Update Troubleshooter
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any recommended action, restart the computer, and return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and note whether the same message returns.
When the update branch does not fit
Do not keep repeating update repairs if the message appeared in a game, an application installer, or a licensing dialog. Windows Update may be functioning normally while the other program reports its own code. Return to the identification checklist and verify the originating window.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That lifecycle fact matters when deciding whether to remain on Windows 10 or plan an upgrade, but it does not establish a cause for 0x00806B24 and does not convert the value into a known Windows error.

Activation errors need the installed edition and licensing context, not just a hexadecimal number. Start by confirming the version with winver, then use the built-in Activation Troubleshooter.
Windows 11 activation steps
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Review the edition shown under Windows specifications and the activation status.
- Select Troubleshoot if it is available and complete the guided checks.
- Restart if Windows requests it, then return to the Activation page to see whether the status changed.
Windows 10 activation steps
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Confirm the installed edition and read the complete activation message.
- Select Troubleshoot and follow the prompts.
- Restart when prompted and check Activation again.
Microsoft’s guidance is to contact customer support when an activation error code is not listed on its support page. Because 0x00806B24 is not currently listed, escalate after the troubleshooter if the message remains. Give support the full wording, your winver result, the edition shown in Settings, and what changed immediately before the error.

If it appeared during Windows Setup or an upgrade
A setup dialog can look similar to an update dialog while belonging to the Windows installation process. If the code appeared while upgrading or installing Windows, begin with Microsoft’s general upgrade and installation troubleshooting rather than an activation-only repair.
- Cancel the attempt if Windows gives you a safe option to do so, and restart the PC.
- Disconnect nonessential external hardware such as removable storage, printers, cameras and hubs. Leave only the input devices and hardware required to operate the computer.
- Record the complete setup message and the Windows version from which you started the upgrade.
- Run the upgrade or setup process again using Microsoft’s installation troubleshooting guidance for your scenario.
- If the same code returns, stop repeating attempts and use the setup support route with the screenshot, Windows build, edition and the point at which setup failed.
Do not assume that an unlisted setup code indicates a damaged Windows installation. Without the rest of the setup message, its source cannot be established.

If a game or another application displayed it
When the code appears inside a game, a vendor installer, a device utility or any other non-Windows program, treat it as application-specific. Windows does not assign a universal meaning to every hexadecimal value displayed by software.
- Open the application’s own Help or Support area and search for the complete message, not only the number.
- Check the developer’s documented support channel for the exact application version.
- Provide the vendor with the full text, a screenshot, the action that triggered the error, your Windows edition and build, and the application version.
- Check Event Viewer for a related entry at the same time as the failure. Open Start, search for Event Viewer, open it, and review the relevant Windows Logs > Application or Windows Logs > System entry. Include the event source, date and time, and event ID in your report.
If the application is a game or older utility, its documentation may use hexadecimal values for internal addresses or statuses. The unrelated 2012 PSP result demonstrates why that value should not be treated as a Windows code without matching context.
What not to do
- Do not infer a fix from the number alone. The code is not documented as a standard Windows 10/11 update or activation code.
- Do not delete registry keys, rename system folders or replace DLL files based on an unverified web guide.
- Do not disable security software permanently or run an unknown executable that promises a guaranteed repair.
- Do not send a support request without the full message. The missing text often identifies whether Windows or another program generated the value.
- Do not confuse Windows 10’s end-of-support date with the cause of this particular code.
When to escalate
Escalation is appropriate when the source is identified but the documented first-line path fails:
- Windows Update: after the troubleshooter, restart and a fresh update check still reproduce the message.
- Activation: after the Activation Troubleshooter, the code remains unlisted or the activation state does not change. Microsoft’s published advice for an unlisted activation code is to contact customer support.
- Setup or upgrade: after disconnecting nonessential hardware and following the general installation guidance, setup fails at the same stage.
- Third-party software: whenever the vendor’s support documentation does not explain the code or the Event Viewer entry points to that application.
Include the screenshot, exact text, trigger action, winver output, application version where relevant, and any matching Event Viewer details. This information is more actionable than sending the eight-digit value by itself.
