Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Error 0x00805E76 is not a documented Windows 10 or Windows 11 code, so there is no reliable one-size-fits-all repair. The practical fix is to identify what displayed it, what you were doing when it appeared, and whether Windows recorded a matching event. Then follow the repair path for that trigger—usually Windows Update, an upgrade or installation, a hardware/driver failure, or one application. Do not download a “universal error fixer” based only on this number.
What error 0x00805E76 means
Microsoft’s current Windows 10 and Windows 11 support material does not identify 0x00805E76. Exact-code searches also produce no authoritative explanation. That means the hexadecimal value cannot, by itself, tell you whether Windows Update, a driver, an installer, or an individual application generated the message.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
A hexadecimal code is often only one part of an error record. The useful information may be in the sentence beside it, the name in the title bar, an application log, or an Event Viewer entry. Two computers can display the same number for different underlying failures, while the same failure can produce different numbers in different components. Treat the number as a clue to investigate, not as proof of malware, a damaged registry, or a specific missing file.
Because the code is undocumented, any website promising a guaranteed code-specific fix is making a claim that the available Microsoft documentation does not support. Start with evidence collection, then choose the least destructive repair for the event that caused the message.

Capture the context before changing Windows
Record the following while the message is still visible. A screenshot is useful, but write the details down as well in case the dialog disappears after a restart.
- Complete text: include every sentence, any file name, and any secondary number shown with 0x00805E76.
- Where it appeared: note whether the window belonged to Windows Update, Setup, a named application, a driver installer, or the sign-in or boot process.
- Triggering action: write down whether you were checking for updates, installing or upgrading software, starting an application, restarting, waking the PC, or connecting hardware.
- Windows edition and build: press
Win+R, enterwinver, and record the edition, version, and OS build. - Recent changes: list hardware, drivers, Windows updates, applications, or security software installed immediately before the first occurrence.
- Event evidence: open Event Viewer from Start search and look for an Error or Critical event at the same time. Record the event source, event ID, timestamp, and the General-tab message. Do not copy only the hexadecimal code.
Keep this record even if a restart makes the warning disappear. If it returns, matching timestamps and event sources can distinguish an update problem from a device or application problem.
Use the trigger to select the right repair path
The table below is a decision guide. Begin with the least reversible action in the right-hand column and move toward recovery only if the symptom continues.

| A feature upgrade or software installation failed | Setup files, permissions, security software, nonessential peripherals, or update components | Disconnect nonessential devices and review the installer’s specific guidance |
| The PC repeatedly crashed or restarted | Recently added hardware, a driver, disk space, or a broader Windows failure | Remove the recent hardware, use Safe Mode, and inspect Device Manager |
| Only one application displayed the code | That application or its interaction with a component | Capture the application name and event details before changing system-wide settings |
| The message appeared during boot or sign-in | Startup software, a device, or Windows recovery state | Use Safe Mode or a Windows recovery option after recording the evidence |
Fixes when the code appears during Windows Update
Windows 11: run the automated troubleshooter first
- Open the Get Help app from Start.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and follow its diagnostic prompts. Microsoft says the automated troubleshooter checks for common update problems and attempts applicable repairs.
- Restart the computer even if the troubleshooter reports that it made no change.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If Get Help does not resolve the issue or is unavailable, use the built-in settings route: Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Select Windows Update, choose Run, restart, and check for updates again.

Windows 10: use the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Allow the diagnostic process to finish, restart Windows, and return to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and note whether the same message returns.
Windows 10 free Windows Update support ended on October 14, 2025. If this computer is still on Windows 10, Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 where the hardware meets its requirements; the end of free support does not explain this undocumented code, but it affects what update assistance and security maintenance you can expect.
If the update troubleshooter reports that it could not repair the problem
- Write down the troubleshooter’s result instead of repeatedly running it without recording changes.
- Restart once more and test a manual update check. A restart can complete a pending servicing operation.
- Check whether the failure occurs for one update or every update. The update name and failure timestamp are valuable when requesting support.
- Do not delete update folders, edit servicing-related registry keys, or run scripts copied from an unverified forum solely because they mention 0x00805E76. Those actions can create a second problem and are not a documented fix for this number.
Fixes for an upgrade or installation failure
If the message appeared while upgrading Windows or installing a component, treat the setup process—not the code alone—as the starting point.
Remove nonessential hardware
Shut down and unplug printers, scanners, USB storage, external disks, docking accessories, and other devices that are not required to complete setup. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and hardware needed to boot. Retry the operation after restarting. If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time after setup finishes to identify the conflict.

Check security software without leaving the PC unprotected
Third-party antivirus or endpoint software can interfere with an upgrade or installer. Review the security product’s documented procedure for compatibility mode or temporary suspension during setup. Do not leave protection disabled after the test, and do not assume that the code proves an infection.

Verify permissions and use the installer’s guidance
Make sure the account running setup has the permissions required by that installer and that the destination drive has adequate free space. If the specific setup guidance calls for resetting Windows Update components, follow Microsoft’s instructions for that particular failure rather than applying a generic script. Record which component was reset and whether the next attempt reached a different stage.
Fixes for repeated crashes or unexpected restarts
Undo the most recent hardware change
Remove a newly installed expansion card, USB device, memory module, storage device, or peripheral and test the computer in its previous configuration. If stability returns, the new hardware, its connection, or its driver is the leading suspect. Keep the device disconnected while you obtain the manufacturer’s current driver or support instructions.
Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and startup components. Use it to determine whether the crash depends on software that does not load in that environment. If the PC is stable in Safe Mode but not during a normal start, focus on a recently installed driver, startup program, security component, or peripheral rather than repeatedly changing unrelated Windows settings.
Inspect Device Manager
- Search Start for Device Manager and open it.
- Expand categories related to the hardware that changed before the crashes.
- Look for a yellow exclamation mark or a device shown as unknown or disabled.
- For a suspect device, note its exact name and driver date. Update it using the hardware maker’s supported package, or disable or uninstall it only when the evidence points to that device.
- Restart normally and test the same action that previously caused the code.
Do not remove several drivers at once. Changing one device at a time preserves a clear cause-and-effect record and makes it possible to roll back the last change.

Check disk space and pending updates
Ensure the system drive has enough free space for paging, temporary setup files, and updates. Install current Windows updates that are offered for your edition, then restart. A full drive or a partially completed update can make later crashes look unrelated to the original change.
Use recovery only after reversible checks
If Safe Mode and driver checks do not stop the restarts, try System Restore or another Windows recovery option that matches the timing of the failure. Read the recovery screen carefully: some options preserve personal files while others remove applications or reset Windows. Use the evidence you recorded to select a restore point before the hardware, driver, or update change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When only one application shows 0x00805E76
An application-only failure is different from a Windows-wide failure. If Windows remains stable and other programs work, record the application name, version, action that triggers the dialog, and any matching Application event in Event Viewer. Test whether the problem occurs for another Windows user account or only with one document or project, if doing so is safe for your data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the application’s own update, repair, or support process after preserving settings and files. Avoid system-wide driver removal or registry cleaners when the evidence points to one program. If the application was installed immediately before the problem, uninstalling it through Settings > Apps and reinstalling a current package may be appropriate, but keep the installer’s error text for the vendor. The undocumented number does not identify which application file should be replaced.

What to do when the message appears at boot or sign-in
First disconnect nonessential USB and external devices and try one restart. If the message returns before the desktop appears, use Windows recovery options to reach Safe Mode, then apply the hardware and Device Manager checks above. If Safe Mode also fails, use System Restore or another recovery option rather than repeatedly forcing power-offs. Repeated forced shutdowns can leave Windows in a recovery loop and erase useful event timing.
Escalate with a complete evidence package
Contact Microsoft support or a qualified technician when the code persists after the branch that matches its trigger, when the computer cannot remain running long enough to troubleshoot, or when recovery may risk data. Provide:
- the exact dialog text and a screenshot;
- Windows edition, version, and build from
winver; - the application or component named in the window;
- what happened immediately before the first occurrence;
- Event Viewer’s source, event ID, timestamp, and message;
- the troubleshooter result and every hardware, driver, restart, or recovery step already attempted.
This information lets support choose a component-specific procedure. Sending only “0x00805E76” leaves too little evidence to distinguish an update failure from a driver, installer, or application crash.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the code has a universal meaning: Microsoft does not currently document this exact value for Windows 10 or 11.
- Installing an unverified fixer: a download that promises to repair this number may be unrelated to the component that generated it.
- Changing many things at once: simultaneous driver removal, registry edits, security changes, and recovery actions destroy the evidence needed to find the cause.
- Disabling protection permanently: if security software is suspected during setup, follow its documented temporary procedure and restore protection immediately afterward.
- Ignoring the trigger: an update dialog, a boot restart, and a single-app crash require different checks.
A practical checklist
- Photograph the dialog and copy its complete text.
- Record the window or application, triggering action, recent changes, and
winverdetails. - Check Event Viewer for a matching source, event ID, and timestamp.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter when the trigger was an update, then restart and check for updates.
- For setup failures, disconnect nonessential hardware, review security-software compatibility guidance, verify permissions and free space, and reset update components only when the specific guidance requires it.
- For crashes or restarts, remove recent hardware, test Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, address one suspect driver at a time, check free space, and use recovery options if necessary.
- For an application-only failure, preserve the app details and use its supported repair or support route instead of making system-wide changes.
- Escalate with the complete evidence package if the code remains or Windows becomes unstable.
