It may appear during activation, in Microsoft Store, or in another program, and each case requires a different check.
Start by recording the complete message and its location, then follow the matching section below. Do not assume this is an activation error, malware, or a damaged Windows installation until that context is known.

Microsoft’s published list of Windows activation errors does not include 0x00805E0D or the shortened form 0x805E0D. There is therefore no authoritative Microsoft explanation of what this exact value means, what component generated it, or which single fix is guaranteed to work.

The same number could be displayed by a Windows page, Microsoft Store, or a third-party application, with the surrounding message supplying the information needed to diagnose it. Microsoft’s own guidance says that users who receive an activation code not listed in its documentation should contact customer support.

The code alone also does not prove that your PC is infected, that Windows is counterfeit, or that a registry entry is broken. Treat it as an unidentified error until you know where it appeared and what action triggered it.
Use the location to choose the right path

Capture the evidence before changing settings
Because the code is undocumented, your notes are part of the diagnosis. Record these details while the error is visible:

- Copy the complete error text. Include the sentence before and after the hexadecimal value, not just
0x00805E0D. - Identify the exact location. Note whether it appeared in Windows Settings, Microsoft Store, an installer, or another application. If possible, take a screenshot that includes the window title and surrounding controls.
- Record the trigger. Write down whether it appeared while activating Windows, opening Store, installing an app, signing in, or after a restart or hardware change.
- Check your Windows edition and build. Press
Windows key + R, enterwinver, and record the edition, version, and build number shown. - Note recent changes. Include a motherboard replacement or other substantial hardware change, a Windows reinstall, an edition upgrade, a new product key, or a Microsoft-account change.
Keep this information for any later contact with Microsoft or the application publisher. It prevents a support agent from treating an undocumented code as if it were a known activation failure.

Apply the safe checks that fit every context
1. Install pending Windows updates
Microsoft directs users to confirm that Windows is supported and up to date before activation troubleshooting. Updates can also correct Store and system-component problems that prevent a transaction or sign-in from completing.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install all available updates.
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately require a restart.
- Repeat the action that originally produced
0x00805E0D.
If an update repeatedly fails, record its separate error code. Do not substitute a registry cleaner or an unrelated “error fixer” for Windows Update troubleshooting.
2. Confirm the action and message have not changed
After restarting, reproduce the problem once and check whether the code still appears in the same place. A different message, a different application, or a failure that occurs only after sign-in points to a different troubleshooting path. Preserve the new wording rather than relying on memory of the original prompt.
If the code appears under Windows activation
Use this section only when the message is on the Windows activation page. Activation depends on a valid digital license or a 25-character product key, and the installed Windows edition must match the license.

Open the correct activation page
- Windows 11: open Settings > System > Activation.
- Windows 10: open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
Read the status shown there. Note the edition (for example, whether it is a Home or Pro installation), whether Windows reports that it is activated, and whether a troubleshooter button is available.
Run the Activation troubleshooter
- On the activation page, select Troubleshoot if that button is present.
- Allow the troubleshooter to finish and follow its on-screen prompts.
- If it asks you to choose the device or license associated with your account, select the matching device.
- Restart Windows and check the activation page again.
The troubleshooter is most useful when the digital license is linked to your Microsoft account. It cannot turn an invalid or mismatched license into a valid one.
Sign in with the account that owns the digital license
Open the activation page while signed in to the Microsoft account used when Windows was previously activated. If the license was never linked to that account, the troubleshooter may not be able to find it. Sign out and back in only when you know which account holds the license; switching accounts at random can make the situation harder to document.
Check the installed edition against the license
A license for one edition does not activate a different edition. Compare the edition shown in winver and on the activation page with the edition associated with your digital license or product key. If they differ, use a valid 25-character key for the installed edition or contact the seller or Microsoft Support. Do not purchase a key merely because the undocumented code appeared; first establish that Windows is actually reporting an edition or licensing mismatch.

Enter a genuine 25-character product key only when appropriate
Microsoft describes a Windows product key as a 25-character code. Use the key supplied with your legitimate purchase or device documentation and enter it through the activation page’s product-key option. Keep the receipt or proof of purchase. If the key is rejected, record the exact message and stop trying random keys; repeated guesses do not identify the cause of 0x00805E0D.
Account for a motherboard or major hardware replacement
A motherboard replacement or another substantial hardware change can require Windows to be reactivated because the device no longer matches the activation record. An account-linked digital license gives the Activation troubleshooter a way to associate the changed hardware with the existing license. Run the troubleshooter while signed in to the linked account and select the option indicating that hardware changed, if it is offered.
If the original license was tied to an organization, a preinstalled device, or a transferable purchase with specific terms, the seller or organization may need to handle reactivation. Keep the old device information and purchase records available.

A Store message is not proof that Windows activation is failing. Start with the Store-specific checks below, then escalate if the Store still will not open or complete the action.
Update and restart first
Complete the Windows Update steps above, restart, and try to open Microsoft Store again. If the Store opens, check for Store or app updates before repeating the original install or purchase.
Verify date, time, and location
Incorrect clock or location information can interfere with Store availability and account transactions. In Settings, confirm that the date, time, time zone, and location reflect where the PC is actually being used. On Windows 11, date and time controls are under Settings > Time & language > Date & time; Windows 10 uses Settings > Time & Language > Date & time. Location controls are under the Privacy settings for your Windows version. Correct any mismatch, restart Store, and retry once.
Search for the Store app directly
Use the Start menu search for Microsoft Store rather than relying on an old shortcut or a pinned tile. If the app appears in search, open it from there and note whether the same code is shown. If it does not appear or still refuses to open after updates and time/location checks, preserve the full message and contact Microsoft Support.
If another application shows the code
When the code appears outside Settings and Microsoft Store, Windows has no verified public definition to apply. The application name, version, full message, and action being attempted become the primary clues.
- Update Windows and restart as described above.
- Record the application’s name and version, the account used, and the exact operation that fails.
- Check the application publisher’s own support documentation for the complete message, not just the hexadecimal fragment.
- If the program was recently installed or changed, preserve its installer or purchase details for support rather than deleting system files.
- Send the publisher or Microsoft Support your
winverresult, screenshot, recent changes, and the steps already attempted.
Do not reinterpret an application-specific message as proof that your Windows license is invalid. Only the activation page can show Windows activation status.
How to decide whether this is activation, Store, or an unknown application error

When and how to escalate
Contact Microsoft Support when the code remains on the activation page after updates and the troubleshooter, when a legitimate key or digital license is rejected, or when Microsoft Store still will not open after the Store checks. If the code belongs to another application, contact that application’s publisher instead.
Provide a compact, reproducible record:
- the complete error text and a screenshot;
- the application or Settings page where it appears;
- Windows edition, version, and build from
winver; - whether Windows uses a digital license or a 25-character key;
- the Microsoft account used for activation, without sending your password;
- any motherboard or other substantial hardware change;
- the date of the failure and the exact steps that reproduce it;
- which updates, restarts, troubleshooter actions, and Store checks you already completed.
Never send a full product key, password, or recovery code in a public forum. Share sensitive licensing details only through the official support channel that requests them.
