Error 0x0080397E has no documented, code-specific fix in Microsoft’s public Windows 10 or Windows 11 support material. The reliable way to resolve it is to identify where the code appears—Windows Update, setup or upgrade, activation, a crash or restart, or one particular application—and then follow the troubleshooting path for that context. Record the complete message before changing anything; the surrounding text is often more useful than the hexadecimal number.
What error 0x0080397E means
Microsoft’s current consumer documentation does not map 0x0080397E to a named Windows component or publish a dedicated repair procedure for it. That does not prove the message is fake, nor does it identify one universal cause. The same-looking code can be displayed by different installers, applications, or Windows components, and each may require a different remedy.

Start by treating the code as a symptom, not a diagnosis. A Windows Update failure needs a different investigation from an activation message. An upgrade rollback produces different evidence from an application crash. Do not begin with a registry edit, a driver package, a “cleaner,” or a hardware replacement: no authoritative Microsoft source connects any of those actions specifically to 0x0080397E.

- Location: note whether it appeared in Windows Update, Settings activation, Windows Setup, a blue or black screen, or an application window. Record the application name and version if one is shown.
- Timing: record whether it began after a Windows update, a feature upgrade, a driver or hardware change, or the installation of an application.
- Windows edition and build: press
Windows + R, enterwinver, and copy the version, edition, and build number. - Frequency: note whether it happens once, after every restart, only during a particular task, or intermittently.
- Recent changes: list newly connected printers, scanners, USB devices, external disks, docks, or internal hardware.
- Time of occurrence: write down the date and approximate time. This helps match the message with setup or system records.
Take a screenshot if possible, but do not include product keys, passwords, email addresses, or other personal information when sharing it. If this is an upgrade failure, preserve the setup logs before running cleanup utilities or deleting temporary installation files.
Choose the troubleshooting path

If 0x0080397E appears during a crash or restart
Microsoft notes that an unexpected restart can be caused by a hardware device, its driver, or software. Work from the least disruptive checks toward recovery.
1. Remove hardware added immediately before the problem
Shut down the computer and disconnect nonessential devices that were installed or connected just before the first failure. This can include a printer, scanner, USB storage, external display adapter, dock, or expansion device. Leave the keyboard, mouse, and monitor connected when needed for testing. If the restarts stop, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the trigger.

Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. If the computer is stable there, a recently loaded driver or software component becomes more likely than a general Windows failure.

- Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10.
- Under advanced startup, choose Restart now. Windows will restart to the recovery environment.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Choose the Safe Mode option shown on screen. If the system is stable, restart normally after testing.
If Settings cannot be opened, interrupting startup twice can cause Windows to enter the recovery environment on the next start; use that only when normal startup is unavailable and be prepared to save open work first.
3. Check Device Manager
In Windows, right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand categories and look for a device with a yellow exclamation point. Open its Properties to read the status message, then consider the available Update driver, Disable device, or Uninstall device actions. Record the device name and current status before making a change. If disabling or uninstalling it restores stability, obtain the correct driver from the device or computer manufacturer before re-enabling it.
4. Check disk space and install pending updates
Open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11, or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10, and verify that the system drive has adequate free space. Remove only files you recognize as safe to remove. Then install available Windows updates and restart. A lack of space or pending updates can complicate recovery even when neither is the original cause.
5. Use recovery options if startup remains unreliable
If the computer continues to crash after hardware and driver checks, use System Restore when a suitable restore point exists, or another option under Troubleshoot > Advanced options. Recovery can remove recent system changes, so back up important personal files first when Windows still starts. If the code appears only in one application while Windows remains stable, do not use system recovery as a first response; investigate that application separately.

If 0x0080397E appears in Windows Update
Microsoft says the Windows Update troubleshooter can help when an error code appears while updates are downloaded or installed. Run it, restart, and attempt the update again before making broader changes.
Windows 11
- Open Get Help and search for the Windows Update troubleshooter, then follow its prompts; or open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Next to Windows Update, select Run and allow the automated checks to complete.
- Restart the computer even if the troubleshooter reports that it made no change.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Record whether the same update and the same complete message return.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and complete the prompts.
- Restart the computer.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and choose Check for updates.
Microsoft’s free Windows Update support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. That date affects the support status of the operating system; it does not identify the cause of 0x0080397E. If you are still using Windows 10 in 2026, note the edition and build from winver when seeking help.
If it appears during Windows setup or an upgrade
Setup failures are often caused by a device, permission, or a component identified in the installation logs. Keep the existing Windows installation intact until you have copied personal files and preserved the logs.
1. Disconnect nonessential devices
Shut down and unplug printers, scanners, USB drives, external disks, card readers, and other peripherals. Undock a laptop. Leave only the devices required to operate the computer and display the setup process. Reconnect peripherals after the upgrade succeeds, one at a time.

2. Check account permissions
Use an account that can make system changes. If Setup reports that it cannot write files or alter settings, sign in with an administrator account or have the administrator perform the upgrade. Do not weaken security controls or edit the registry solely because 0x0080397E is present; the code itself is not evidence that either action is needed.
3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Use the Windows 11 or Windows 10 path above, restart, and retry setup. If the same failure returns, note the exact stage—download, install, first reboot, or rollback—because that narrows the log search.
4. Preserve and read setup logs
When available, copy these files to another folder before cleanup:

Search the copies for the failure time, the hexadecimal code, and lines marked as errors. A log entry is evidence about that installation attempt, not proof that every computer displaying 0x0080397E has the same cause.
5. Run SetupDiag
SetupDiag is Microsoft’s diagnostic aid for identifying causes of Windows upgrade failures. Run it after the failed attempt and keep its report with the setup logs. Use the report’s named failure or compatibility issue to choose the next action; do not replace a device or delete system files simply because the report contains an unfamiliar term.
If it appears during Windows activation
1. Confirm the installed edition
Press Windows + R, enter winver, and record the edition and build. An activation key or digital license must correspond to the installed edition; a mismatch is a more useful lead than the hexadecimal code alone.
2. Run the Activation troubleshooter
- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Activation and select Troubleshoot when it is offered.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation and select Troubleshoot.
- Follow the prompts, then restart if Windows requests it.
Do not publish or send a product key while asking for help. If 0x0080397E is not listed in Microsoft’s activation error-code table, Microsoft’s instruction is to contact customer support rather than apply an unrelated workaround. Have your edition, build, purchase or license history, and the complete message ready.

When Windows starts normally, other applications work, and the code appears in one program, the application is the most relevant context. Record its name, version, action that triggers the error, and whether the problem began after an application or Windows update. Check the program’s own repair, update, or reinstall option and consult its publisher’s support channel. Avoid system-wide driver changes or recovery operations unless Windows itself is also unstable.
What not to assume about 0x0080397E
- There is no verified universal “0x0080397E fix” that applies to every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
- A registry change is not established as a solution for this code.
- Installing a random driver, replacing hardware, or deleting temporary files is not a code-specific remedy.
- The hexadecimal value alone does not show that malware is present or that Windows is permanently damaged.
- No published Microsoft statistic establishes a success rate, prevalence, repair cost, or performance impact for this code.
When to contact Microsoft or another support channel
Escalate when the code persists after the context-appropriate steps, when setup repeatedly rolls back, when activation displays an unlisted code, or when the machine cannot start normally. Provide the full message, winver output, timing, recent changes, and the relevant logs. For a setup issue, include the SetupDiag report and preserved setupact.log files. For a crash, list hardware removed or tested and any Device Manager status message. This evidence prevents support from treating an undocumented code as if it had a single known cause.
