How to Fix Error 0x006C48DA on Windows 11 and 10

Error 0x006C48DA has no documented meaning in the Microsoft error references reviewed. It is therefore not possible to identify it responsibly as a Windows Update, activation, driver, malware, or other specific error from the code alone. The reliable fix starts by recording exactly where the message appeared and then following the troubleshooting path for that situation.

Restarting and retrying is safe, but do not begin with registry cleaners, random “code fixes,” or system changes that erase evidence. Use the procedure below to separate an update failure, a crash or restart, an application problem, an installer problem, and a browser or sign-in pop-up.

What error 0x006C48DA means

The hexadecimal string 0x006C48DA does not have a confirmed match in the official Microsoft error references checked for this guide. Exact-code searches also do not provide reliable technical documentation that assigns it a cause. That means the characters alone cannot tell you which Windows component failed.

The same-looking message can be produced by a particular application, an installer, a device utility, a browser page, or a Windows component. The title bar, the surrounding text, and the operation that was underway are more useful than the number itself. Treat the code as an identifier for an event that needs context, not as a diagnosis.

Do not assume it is a Windows Update code just because it appeared near an update notification. Conversely, do not assume a pop-up is a genuine Windows dialog merely because it uses a hexadecimal-looking number. The steps below begin with identification so that a low-risk fix is attempted before an advanced reset or recovery action.

Record the complete context before changing anything

Preserve the evidence while the message is visible. A screenshot is best; otherwise transcribe every line, including the window title, buttons, file name, and any secondary code.

  1. Write down the trigger. State whether the message appeared while downloading or installing Windows updates, launching a particular application, signing in, installing software, shutting down, restarting, or browsing a web page.
  2. Record what changed. Note recent Windows updates, driver or application installations, hardware additions, security-software changes, and configuration changes. Include the approximate date and time.
  3. Check Windows Update history if an update was running. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history in Windows 11, or Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history in Windows 10. The failed update entry may show a more specific code than the dialog did.
  4. Check logs after the immediate evidence is saved. Press Win+X, choose Event Viewer, and inspect Windows Logs > Application for an application failure or Windows Logs > System for a restart, device, or service event at the same time. Application-specific logs may contain the executable name and faulting module.

These details determine which branch of the guide applies. If the code appears only once and the operation succeeds after a restart, keep the record in case it returns; there is no documented reason to perform an invasive repair for a one-time, unexplained message.

  1. Restart Windows once. Select Start > Power > Restart, wait for the desktop to load completely, and retry the same operation. A restart can clear a temporarily locked service or application, but it does not identify the underlying cause.
  2. Disconnect newly added, nonessential hardware. Unplug recently connected USB storage, docks, printers, adapters, and other accessories, then retry. Leave the keyboard, mouse, and display connected. If the error started during an upgrade or installation, external hardware is a useful first variable to remove.
  3. Install pending Windows updates. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update; in Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Install what is offered, restart, and test again. If the message itself prevents updating, use the Windows Update branch below.
  4. Review recently installed software. If the event began during an upgrade, Microsoft’s general installation guidance includes removing nonessential software and, where appropriate, temporarily removing non-Microsoft antivirus during the upgrade. Make sure you can reinstall the product and restore protection immediately afterward; do not leave a computer unprotected longer than necessary.
  5. Check storage before an upgrade or recovery operation. Microsoft’s installation guidance states a minimum of 16 GB of free space for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade. Unexpected-restart guidance suggests keeping roughly 10% to 15% of the system drive free, depending on the configuration. Open Settings > System > Storage in Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage in Windows 10 to see the available space.

If 0x006C48DA appeared during Windows Update

Use this path only when the dialog appeared while Windows was downloading or installing an update, or when Update history identifies a failed update. Microsoft states: “If you get an error code while downloading and installing Windows updates, the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve the problem.”

Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. Windows 11: open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  2. Windows 10: open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Select Windows Update, then Run the troubleshooter.
  3. Allow the check to finish and apply any offered correction. Restart Windows when prompted. Return to the Windows Update page and select Check for updates.

The troubleshooter is an automated diagnostic, not proof that the unidentified code has a single known cause. If it reports that no problem was found, continue with the evidence in Update history rather than repeatedly running the same check.

Reset Windows Update components only as advanced troubleshooting

If the error is clearly tied to Windows Update and the troubleshooter does not resolve it, Microsoft documents a manual component reset. This requires an administrator account and comfort with an elevated command prompt. It stops update services and renames their working folders; it does not erase personal files, but an interrupted command or unrelated system problem can create additional troubleshooting work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save work and close Settings. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Stop the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Windows Update service:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
  1. Rename the cached update folders so Windows can create fresh ones:
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
  1. Start the services again:
net start bits
net start wuauserv
  1. Close the command window and restart the computer. Open Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If a command returns “Access is denied,” the prompt was not elevated or a service is still using the folder. Do not delete random system directories. Recheck that the window title says Administrator: Command Prompt, restart, and seek support if the service will not stop. If the reset changes the symptoms but the same update still fails, use the exact failed-update entry from Update history when escalating.

If the code accompanies crashes or unexpected restarts

When Windows crashes, freezes, or restarts, Microsoft identifies hardware, a device driver, or software as possible causes. The code itself does not distinguish among them. Work from the least destructive checks to recovery.

Test in Safe Mode

  1. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now. Windows will reboot to the recovery menu.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. After the next restart, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

Use Safe Mode only to test and remove the likely trigger. If the crash does not occur there, a startup program, non-Microsoft service, device, or driver becomes more likely. If it still occurs in Safe Mode, hardware, core Windows files, or recovery may need attention.

Inspect Device Manager

  1. Press Win+X and choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand categories related to the recent change, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Bluetooth, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Printers.
  3. Look for a yellow warning icon. Open the device’s Properties to read its status and the date of the installed driver.
  4. If the problem started immediately after a driver change, use the device’s Driver tab to roll back when that option is available. Otherwise, obtain the correct driver from the device or computer manufacturer, or temporarily disable the clearly affected device for testing. Do not disable hardware you need for input or display without another way to control the computer.

Check space, updates, and recovery

  • Keep approximately 10% to 15% of the system drive free, as Microsoft’s unexpected-restart guidance says the needed amount varies by configuration.
  • Install pending Windows updates after the machine is stable enough to do so.
  • If the failure began after a known software, driver, or configuration change, open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore and choose a restore point from before that change, if one exists.
  • If Windows cannot boot normally, use Troubleshoot > Advanced options in the recovery environment and choose the recovery option that matches your available backup and the amount of data you can risk changing. Recovery operations can remove applications or settings, so read the on-screen scope before confirming.

If it appears when launching an application

An application launch error is not automatically a Windows error. First identify the executable and whether every user account is affected.

  1. Close the application and restart Windows. Try the same launch once without opening other programs.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10. Select the application and use Advanced options > Repair when the option exists. Use Reset only after reading its warning, because it can remove the application’s local settings or sign-in data.
  3. Check the application’s own update channel and its vendor’s release notes. If repair does not help, uninstall and reinstall from the original, trusted source, retaining any license or configuration information first.
  4. Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application at the failure time. Record the faulting application name, faulting module, and exception code if shown. Those fields are more actionable for the software vendor than 0x006C48DA alone.
  5. If the application works in a new Windows user account, the original profile may contain damaged settings. Keep the original profile until files and application data have been copied and verified.

Do not replace system DLL files downloaded from unofficial sites. A DLL mentioned in an event log belongs to a particular application or Windows component; replacing it blindly can create a second failure.

If it appears during an installer, sign-in, shutdown, or browser pop-up

Installer or upgrade

Confirm the installer came from the software maker or an authorized distribution channel. Disconnect nonessential peripherals, make the free-space check above, close other programs, and retry after a restart. If this is a Windows upgrade, review Update history and the installer’s complete log rather than treating the hexadecimal string as a universal upgrade code.

Sign-in

Note which account and application requested credentials. A genuine Windows sign-in screen and an application’s own sign-in window can display different messages. Cancel the prompt if it is unexpected, open the application from its installed shortcut, and verify the account through the service’s normal settings. Never provide a password to a web page reached through an unsolicited pop-up.

Shutdown or restart

Wait for Windows to finish an update if the screen says one is being installed. If the machine repeatedly restarts, return to the crash and Safe Mode procedure, remove newly added hardware, inspect Device Manager, and check free space. Holding the power button should be reserved for a completely unresponsive computer because an abrupt shutdown can interrupt writes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Browser pop-up

A web page can display any text it chooses, including a Windows-looking error number. Do not call a phone number, install a “repair” program, or grant remote access solely because a page shows 0x006C48DA. Close the tab, review the browser’s notification permissions and extensions, and reopen the browser without restoring the suspicious page. If the message returns only on one site, provide the page address and screenshot to the browser or site operator rather than treating it as a Windows diagnosis.

Choose the path that matches the symptom

Where the message appears First action Privilege and risk Data impact Support context
Windows Update Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, then check for updates again. Standard settings access; low risk. Component reset requires administrator command-line work. Diagnostic and generally reversible; folder renaming changes update caches. Windows 11 remains supported. Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025.
Crash or unexpected restart Try Safe Mode, remove new hardware, inspect Device Manager, and check free space. Standard recovery access; disabling a device or using recovery needs care. Safe Mode and inspection are diagnostic. System Restore or other recovery can change applications and settings. Hardware, driver, and software causes remain possible.
Application launch Repair the application, review its logs, and reinstall from a trusted source if needed. Usually standard user access; administrator rights may be requested by the installer. Repair is limited; Reset or reinstall can remove local settings. The application vendor may have the most useful fault information.
Installer or upgrade Disconnect nonessential hardware, check required space, review the exact failed entry, and retry. Upgrade actions can require administrator approval. Back up important files before an upgrade or recovery operation. Windows 10 users must account for the end of free support.
Browser or unsolicited pop-up Close it without calling or installing anything; inspect notifications and extensions. Low system risk if no software or remote access is granted. No system change is needed to dismiss a page. The code may be page-generated rather than a Windows message.

What Windows 10’s support end date changes

Microsoft states: “Support for Windows 10 has ended on October 14, 2025.” After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A Windows 10 computer can still start and run existing software, but an unresolved problem may not receive a new no-cost fix through the normal support channel.

For a Windows 10 system that repeatedly produces this code, check whether the hardware can move to Windows 11 and review the supported upgrade requirements before making a change. If an upgrade is not possible, use paid or organizational support options that apply to the edition and region, and keep reliable backups. Do not present the support boundary as proof that it caused 0x006C48DA; it only changes the options available after ordinary troubleshooting fails.

When to escalate and what to send

Escalate when the code repeats, prevents normal use, appears with blue screens or repeated restarts, or remains after the context-specific steps above. Contact Microsoft Support for a Windows component or update failure, or the application/device maker when the event is limited to that product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include a concise evidence packet:

  • The complete dialog text and a screenshot, with the window title visible.
  • The application, installer, device, or Windows operation that triggered it.
  • The exact date and approximate time, plus whether a restart changed the behavior.
  • The Update history entry and failed-update code, if an update was involved.
  • Recent hardware, driver, application, security-software, or Windows changes.
  • Relevant Event Viewer entries from Application or System, including the event source and ID.
  • Whether the error occurs in Safe Mode, with a different user account, or only in a browser page.
  • The Windows edition and version shown under Settings > System > About.

A support technician can use this information to identify the component that emitted the message. Without it, the hexadecimal number alone is not enough to select a safe, specific repair.

Repairs to avoid for this unidentified code

  • Do not edit the registry or delete system folders because a website labels the code as a particular infection, update, or activation failure.
  • Do not download replacement DLL files from an unofficial archive.
  • Do not install a driver-updater utility as a validated fix for this code; the evidence does not establish that a driver is involved.
  • Do not buy a physical accessory or replace hardware until Device Manager, Safe Mode, and the event logs point to a device problem.
  • Do not run repeated component resets when the message actually comes from a browser or one application.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, clean temporary and cache files, review vulnerabilities and application-crash information, and adjust selected settings. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. Results vary, it complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, and no tool repairs every crash.
