Record evidence before attempting a fix
Write down the exact capitalization and punctuation of the message, the hexadecimal value, and the time it occurred. If there was a blue screen, photograph the entire screen or copy the stop-code text after Windows restarts. A named module such as a .sys, .dll, or executable is often more useful than the number itself.

- Note whether the event followed a Windows update, a driver update, new hardware, a new application, or a power interruption.
- Record whether the machine shut down, restarted once, entered a restart loop, or stayed on the desktop.
- For Setup, record the Windows edition and whether the process was an in-place upgrade, a feature update, or a clean installation.
- For activation, note whether the message appeared immediately after a hardware change, a reinstall, or a change of product key.
- For an application, record its name and version and whether other programs continue to work.
Do not infer that the number itself proves malware, a failed hard drive, or a licensing problem. The missing source context is the central diagnostic fact.
If Windows crashed, restarted, or shows a blue screen
Microsoft describes an unexpected restart this way: “An unexpected restart might be caused by a hardware device, its driver, or software.” Work through the least destructive checks first.
1. Remove recently added hardware
Shut down normally if possible. Unplug newly connected USB devices, docks, external drives, printers, webcams, and other nonessential hardware. If you recently installed an internal component, power off, disconnect mains power, and reseat or temporarily remove that component according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Start Windows with only the keyboard, mouse, display, and essential networking attached. If the restart stops, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the trigger.

2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services, which helps separate a basic Windows failure from a third-party driver or startup program.
- From the sign-in screen or desktop, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking when internet access is needed.
If Windows works in Safe Mode but not normal mode, examine recently installed drivers, startup programs, and security software rather than repeatedly rebooting normally.
3. Inspect Device Manager
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand categories related to the event, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Storage controllers, Sound, video and game controllers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers. A yellow warning icon indicates a device or driver problem.

- Open the device’s Properties and read the status on the General tab.
- On the Driver tab, note the provider, date, and version before changing anything.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, use Roll Back Driver when available.
- Otherwise use Uninstall Device only when you have a replacement driver from the device or PC manufacturer; restart so Windows can redetect the hardware.
Avoid installing unverified driver bundles. Preserve the current version and the name of any suspicious driver so you can undo the change.

Open Settings > System > Storage in Windows 11, or Settings > System > Storage in Windows 10, and ensure the system drive has adequate free space for paging, updates, and temporary repair files. Remove only files you recognize. Then open Settings > Windows Update (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update (Windows 10), select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart.
5. Use System Restore when the failure continues
System Restore can return system files, drivers, and settings to an earlier restore point without intentionally deleting personal documents. Search for Create a restore point, open System Properties, select System Restore, and choose a point dated before the first restart or crash. Review the affected programs list before confirming. If Windows will not start, use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore from Windows Recovery Environment.
If 0x0068F5DF appears during an upgrade or installation
Use this branch when the code is shown by Windows Setup, an upgrade assistant, or an installation screen. Do not treat an installer failure as proof that the installed copy of Windows is corrupted; Setup can be blocked by peripherals, drivers, security software, disk errors, or damaged system files.
1. Disconnect nonessential peripherals
Power down and unplug external storage, card readers, printers, cameras, game controllers, docks, and other devices that are not required for Setup. Leave the display, keyboard, mouse, and the installation media or network connection needed by the process. Reconnect devices after the upgrade completes successfully.
2. Check Device Manager before rerunning Setup
In normal Windows, open Device Manager and resolve warning icons. Pay particular attention to storage, display, network, chipset, and USB controllers. A driver that works during ordinary use can still block the temporary operating system used by Setup. Record the existing driver version so you can restore it if a change makes matters worse.

3. Temporarily remove third-party security software when appropriate
Some third-party security products insert drivers and filters into the installation process. If the product’s publisher provides an official uninstall procedure for upgrades, follow it, restart, and reinstall the product only after Windows is running normally. Keep Microsoft Defender or another appropriate protection active as permitted by your configuration, and do not delete security files manually.
4. Repair disk errors
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Run a read-only scan first:
chkdsk C: /scanReplace C: if Windows is installed on another volume. If the scan reports errors that require an offline repair, save your work and run:

Allow it to finish; interrupting a disk repair can create additional problems.
5. Perform a clean boot
- Press Windows key + R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled third-party startup items, close Task Manager, and select OK in System Configuration.
- Restart and run Setup again.
After the upgrade, return to msconfig, choose Normal startup, and re-enable services and startup items in groups. The first group that recreates the failure identifies where to investigate.
6. Repair the Windows image and system files
With an administrator account, open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run these commands in order:

sfc /scannowRestart after SFC reaches 100 percent, and retry Setup. Both commands require administrative rights. If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact result before trying additional changes.

An activation dialog is a separate path from a crash or Setup failure. First make sure the device is connected to the internet and that the installed edition matches the license you intend to use. Install pending Windows updates, restart, and then run the built-in troubleshooter.
Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Expand the activation status if necessary and select Troubleshoot.
- Follow the prompts, including signing in with the Microsoft account associated with a digital license when requested.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot and complete the diagnostic steps.
Record whether the displayed value changes after the troubleshooter. Microsoft advises taking an activation code that is not listed in its activation guidance to customer support. Do not use unofficial activators or replace licensing files; those actions can create a different, harder-to-diagnose problem.
If only one application displays the value
When Windows remains stable and one program alone reports 0x0068F5DF, capture the application’s name, version, full message, and crash time. Check the application’s own update mechanism and the publisher’s documented repair or reset option. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10, select the program and use Advanced options > Repair when offered. Use Reset only after backing up that application’s data because it can remove local settings.
If repair does not help, uninstall and reinstall from the publisher’s legitimate installer. Test with other applications before concluding that Windows itself is at fault. An application crash log, Windows Event Viewer entry, or named DLL can point to the component that needs an update; the hexadecimal value alone cannot.
Advanced diagnosis for recurring blue screens
Use advanced driver testing only after preserving the complete stop-code text and any module name. Microsoft Learn recommends targeting recently updated or suspicious drivers rather than enabling verification indiscriminately. Driver Verifier can deliberately trigger additional crashes while it tests drivers, so save work and make sure you can reach Safe Mode.
Enable targeted verification
- Sign in with an administrator account and press Windows key + R.
- Type
verifierand press Enter. - Choose the option to create standard settings, then select settings that allow you to choose specific driver names.
- Select only the recently updated or suspicious third-party drivers identified in your notes. Do not select every driver.
- Restart and use the computer until the failure recurs, then record the new stop message and module name.
Disable Driver Verifier if startup fails
Enter Safe Mode using the recovery path described earlier. Open an administrator Command Prompt and run:
verifier /resetRestart normally. If the machine remains unable to boot, use System Restore from Windows Recovery Environment or remove the specific driver from Safe Mode, provided you have a known-good replacement.
When none of the branches fits
If the code appears in an unfamiliar utility, firmware screen, or vendor-specific installer, the utility’s full name and version are essential. Search its built-in help and support documentation using the complete message rather than the hexadecimal value alone. Keep Windows Recovery Environment available before making system-wide changes: from Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, review the recovery options and create installation or recovery media on a separate working computer if the affected device cannot boot.
Escalate with a concise evidence bundle: the exact message, context, Windows edition and version, recent changes, dump or event details, steps already attempted, and whether Safe Mode works. This prevents support staff from treating an undocumented number as if it had a known universal fix.
