Treat it as a clue from the program that displayed it: record the complete message, the application or installer, the action that triggered it, and any restart or blue screen. Then use the evidence-led steps below to identify the source and apply the appropriate fix on Windows 11 or Windows 10.
What error 0x0068C845 means
Microsoft explains that system error codes can occur in many locations and require the programmatic and runtime context in which they appeared. Third-party software can also generate its own hexadecimal codes. Microsoft’s official material does not assign 0x0068C845 a documented, consumer-facing meaning. That is why a web page claiming that this code always indicates one particular malware infection, hardware failure, Windows version, or repair would be guessing.

The same value can accompany very different events: an update failure, an application installer, an application launch, or a system crash. The useful question is not just “What is the number?” but “Which component produced it, under what conditions, and what else was recorded at that time?” A one-time dialog after a successful retry calls for a different response from a repeatable crash with a memory dump.

Information to capture before changing anything
- Take a screenshot showing the entire dialog, including its title, explanatory sentence, buttons, and any file or application name.
- Copy the hexadecimal value exactly, including leading zeros and capitalization.
- Write down the executable, installer, game, utility, or Windows component named in the message.
- Record what you clicked immediately before the message appeared: checking for updates, installing, opening an app, connecting a device, or another action.
- Note the date and time, your Windows edition and build, and whether Windows restarted, froze, or displayed a blue screen.
- If an installer or updater created a log file, preserve it before uninstalling or deleting temporary files.
Do not begin by deleting registry keys, replacing hardware, or running an unverified “registry cleaner.” Without the originating component, those actions can remove useful evidence or create a second problem.

Use the trigger to choose the right path
Classifying the event narrows the investigation. Use the row that best matches what you observed, then complete the general checks before moving to specialized recovery.

The originating component matters more than the digits. A code shown by a third-party installer should be interpreted through that vendor’s documentation, while a code in a Windows crash record should be investigated with Windows diagnostics.
Check Windows, access, storage, and peripherals
Install pending Windows updates
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. Install available quality, feature, and driver updates, then restart when prompted. If the page offers troubleshooting in the Get Help app, run that guided troubleshooter.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install the offered updates. For troubleshooting, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update.
- After the restart, repeat the exact action that produced 0x0068C845. Record whether the message changes, disappears, or returns unchanged.
Stay connected to a reliable network during an update and confirm that the account has administrator rights when the installer requires them. A nearly full system drive can prevent update packages from staging correctly, so check available space in Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10. Do not promise a specific free-space threshold for this unknown package; leave enough room for the download, temporary files, and the restart process.

Shut down or restart, then unplug unnecessary USB drives, docks, card readers, printers, and other peripherals before retrying an update or installation. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection required to operate the computer. If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time and repeat the operation to identify a conflicting device or driver. Keep the device and cable that reproduce the problem identified in your notes rather than repeatedly reconnecting everything at once.
Inspect Event Viewer for the originating component
Event Viewer often supplies the executable, module, service, or driver that the short dialog omits.

- Press Windows key + R, type
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one. - In the left pane, expand Windows Logs and select Application. Choose Filter Current Log and narrow the time range to the minute when the error occurred. Look for Error or Warning entries whose source or application name matches the dialog.
- Repeat the search under Windows Logs > System. System entries can identify a service, storage problem, driver, unexpected restart, or device transition associated with the same timestamp.
- Open a matching event and use Copy > Copy Details as Text. Save the text with the screenshot; include the Event ID, source, level, executable or service, and the complete description.
Do not treat an unrelated warning merely because it appears nearby. Correlate the event time, source, and action. If no matching entry exists, preserve that result and continue with the application’s own log or installer record.
Repair Windows component files safely
If the message mentions a Windows component, follows an interrupted update, or appears across several unrelated applications, run Microsoft’s supported image and system-file checks. These commands require an elevated Command Prompt and can take time.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and accept the prompt.
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Wait for it to complete; do not close the window because the percentage may pause while the component store is checked or repaired. - When DISM finishes, run
sfc /scannow. Save the final message, especially whether Windows found and repaired integrity violations or could not repair some files. - Restart Windows and repeat the triggering action once. Keep the command output with your event logs.
These checks repair supported Windows component files; they do not diagnose an unknown third-party code by themselves. Do not substitute registry deletion or a “cleaner” utility for the commands, and do not interrupt a repair unless the computer is clearly unresponsive for an extended period.
If the code appears during Windows Update
Run the correct troubleshooter
Use the Windows 11 Get Help Windows Update troubleshooter or the Windows 10 path listed earlier. Follow its suggested repairs, restart, and retry. Note the troubleshooter’s result rather than assuming that a completed scan means the update itself installed successfully.
Verify the update prerequisites
- Confirm that the computer can reach the internet and that a captive portal or VPN is not interrupting the download.
- Use an administrator account or provide administrator credentials when requested.
- Check that the system drive has practical working space for the package and temporary files.
- Disconnect nonessential external hardware and retry with only necessary devices attached.
- Back up personal files before a major upgrade or any recovery operation. A backup does not repair the code, but it protects documents if troubleshooting requires a rollback or reset.
If the same update fails repeatedly, capture the full update history entry, the exact sentence around 0x0068C845, and the Event Viewer records. Those details let Microsoft or the hardware maker distinguish a servicing failure from a driver or storage problem.

If an application will not install or start
Update the application and its dependencies
Use the application’s current installer from its legitimate publisher and check whether the publisher documents the exact message. If the application has a built-in repair or reset option, use it only after saving its settings and data. Remove a recently added plug-in or extension only when the application’s documentation supports that step, and record what changed.

A background service can interfere with an installer or application without being the source of the hexadecimal value. A clean boot starts Windows with a limited set of services and startup items so you can compare behavior.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
msconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Do not disable Microsoft services before selecting the hide option.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled third-party startup items, close Task Manager, and select OK in System Configuration.
- Restart and repeat the action. If the code no longer appears, re-enable services and startup items in small groups, restarting between groups, until the conflict returns.
- Return to
msconfigand select Normal startup when testing is complete so ordinary services and startup programs work again.
A clean boot is an isolation test, not a permanent performance setting. If the error persists with third-party services disabled, restore normal startup and focus on the application, driver, or Windows component identified in the logs.
If the error accompanies a crash, freeze, restart, or blue screen
Preserve crash evidence
Write down the stop message or blue-screen code, the time, and what changed immediately beforehand. Keep any files in the Windows minidump or dump location instead of using cleanup software that might remove them. Event Viewer’s Windows Logs > System record can show the unexpected restart and related driver or service events.
Use Safe Mode to separate software from a recent change
Safe Mode loads a minimal Windows environment. If the problem does not occur there, a third-party startup item, driver, or service becomes more likely; if it still occurs, Windows, hardware, or the application may be involved. Enter Safe Mode through Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, select the restart option for advanced startup, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Select the Safe Mode option after the restart.

Roll back a recent driver or update
If the crash began immediately after a graphics, chipset, storage, network, or other driver change, open Device Manager, locate the device category, open the device’s Properties, and use Driver > Roll Back Driver when Windows offers that option. If the rollback control is unavailable, use the device maker’s supported previous package rather than a random download. For a recent Windows update, use the recovery options in Windows Update or Advanced startup as appropriate, after backing up personal files.
Update firmware and run hardware tests
Install current chipset, storage, graphics, and network drivers from the computer or component manufacturer. Check the manufacturer’s support page for a BIOS or UEFI firmware update that matches the exact model and revision. Follow its power and recovery instructions; an interrupted firmware update can make a system unbootable.
Run the manufacturer’s memory and hardware diagnostics and save their results. A failed test is evidence to provide to the hardware maker; the hexadecimal value alone is not a reason to purchase replacement RAM, a new drive, or another component. If tests pass, continue correlating the dump, Event Viewer, and recent software changes.
Use Driver Verifier cautiously
Microsoft warns that Driver Verifier can slow a computer and cause additional crashes. Do not enable it broadly as a first-line fix for 0x0068C845. Use it only when a qualified support process identifies a narrow driver-verification plan, and know how to disable it from Safe Mode if Windows becomes unstable.

Update drivers and check firmware even without a blue screen
An application can fail while opening a graphics, audio, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, storage, or USB device even when Windows never displays a stop screen. In Device Manager, inspect the implicated category for warning icons and record the device name and driver version. Prefer the computer or device manufacturer’s official package, restart after installation, and repeat the same action. For a laptop or prebuilt desktop, use the exact model support page; for an add-in card or peripheral, use that component maker’s package.
Do not install several unrelated driver packages simultaneously. Change one component at a time so the next Event Viewer entry can be tied to a specific action. If a driver update introduces the error, use the rollback procedure and preserve the old package information for support.
Confirm the status code with Microsoft’s lookup utility
Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool displays message text associated with hexadecimal status codes and uses Windows header data such as Winerror.h. Run the value through the utility to check whether it maps to a documented Windows system status. A result that is unrecognized does not prove malware or hardware damage; it means the originating application’s documentation or support channel is still needed.
Save the lookup result with the full dialog and Event Viewer details. A recognized system status still requires context, because the same status can be returned from different components and runtime conditions.
When to contact the vendor or Microsoft
Escalate after you can provide reproducible steps and evidence. Contact the application or installer vendor when one product consistently displays the code and Windows logs name that executable. Contact the device or computer manufacturer when a particular driver, firmware package, memory test, or hardware event is implicated. Use Microsoft support or Windows troubleshooting channels when the failure occurs across Windows components, persists after updates and system-file repair, or accompanies a stop error with a dump.
Include:
- The exact on-screen sentence and a screenshot.
- The hexadecimal value as displayed.
- Windows edition, version, and build.
- Application, installer, executable, device model, and driver version.
- The precise steps that reproduce the event and whether it is intermittent.
- Event Viewer entries from Application and System logs, installer logs, update history, and any dump-file summary.
- Results from DISM, SFC, memory tests, hardware diagnostics, Safe Mode, clean boot, and any rollback.
Remove personal data, product keys, passwords, and unrelated file contents before sending logs. Keep the original files locally in case support requests a different format.

- For an app-specific failure, test a clean boot and consult that vendor with the complete message and logs.
- Use Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool to check whether the hexadecimal value is documented, while remembering that an unrecognized value still requires source-specific support.
