Error 0x00249F40 is not currently mapped to a documented Windows 10 or Windows 11 stop code, Windows Update code, driver error, or hardware model. Treat the hexadecimal value as a clue, not a diagnosis. The complete message, the screen or application that displayed it, and any named file or driver are needed to choose a safe fix.
Use the sequence below to identify where the code came from, undo recent changes, repair Windows, and collect evidence if it returns. The steps apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10; menu names can differ slightly by build.

What error 0x00249F40 means
Microsoft’s published Windows 10 and Windows 11 stop-code, blue-screen, and Windows Update references do not identify 0x00249F40 as a standard code. No authoritative mapping ties it specifically to NTFS, WHEA, a particular driver, a graphics card, or a Windows Update failure.
A hexadecimal value can be displayed by many unrelated programs. A number that looks like an error may be an internal status value, an address, or a code generated by an application’s own installer. One search result associates the same digits with a location inside an unrelated game executable; that does not establish a Windows fault. Do not install a replacement component or delete system files solely because this number appeared.

First identify where the code appeared
Write down or photograph the entire screen before dismissing it. Include the exact wording around the number, the application or setup program, the time, and every file, driver, or device name shown. Then use the matching branch below.
Blue screen or automatic restart
A blue screen normally includes a stop-code name, a message such as Windows needing to restart, or a percentage counter. Microsoft explains that Windows stops when a condition compromises safe operation. If 0x00249F40 appeared only in a blue-screen photograph, look for a separate stop-code label such as a name ending in _ERROR, a file name, or a line identifying a failed component. The hexadecimal value alone does not identify the failing subsystem.
Windows Update or an upgrade screen
Note whether the code appeared while checking for updates, downloading, installing, or rolling back. Record the update number, such as a KB identifier, and whether Windows completed a restart. A code shown by a third-party updater is not automatically a Microsoft Update code.
An installer or ordinary application
Record the product name and version, the operation that failed, and whether the failure happens with one program or several. Application logs and the developer’s support information are more useful than a generic Windows repair command when the error is isolated to one app.
Driver, Device Manager, or hardware dialog
Capture the device category, model, driver provider, and driver date. A warning icon in Device Manager, a device-specific status message, or a crash that begins after connecting hardware points toward the driver workflow below.
Event Viewer or a log file
Copy the event source, Event ID, level, timestamp, and the full General and Details text. Event Viewer may record a related failure even when the visible dialog contains only the hexadecimal value.

Before changing anything: preserve evidence and reduce risk
- Save the message. Photograph the screen or copy the complete text into a note. Include the Windows edition and build from Settings > System > About.
- Record recent changes. List hardware connected, drivers installed, Windows updates, applications, security software, and firmware changes made immediately before the problem.
- Back up important files. Use an external drive or a trusted cloud location before uninstalling drivers, restoring the system, or running disk repairs.
- Do not guess at registry edits. A code with no verified owner is not a reason to remove registry keys, replace DLL files downloaded from the web, or disable security protections.
Step 1: restart once and remove recent changes
Choose Start > Power > Restart once. A transient update or service failure may clear after a normal restart. If the problem started immediately after adding a USB device, expansion card, memory module, storage drive, or other hardware, shut down, disconnect the newly added item, and start Windows again. Microsoft recommends removing newly added hardware when repeated stop errors follow a hardware change.
If Windows cannot remain running long enough to troubleshoot, interrupt startup twice by holding the power button while Windows begins loading. On the next boot, Windows should enter the recovery environment. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. If the code disappears in Safe Mode, a startup driver or service is more likely than the basic Windows kernel; undo the most recent change before enabling normal startup again.
Step 2: inspect and roll back device drivers
Use this step when the message identifies a device, the issue began after hardware or driver work, or Device Manager shows a warning icon.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category named in the message, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Bluetooth, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Disk drives.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Properties. Read the status on the General tab and note the driver provider, date, and version on the Driver tab.
- Use Update driver > Search automatically for drivers. Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the first source for automatic driver delivery.
- If the failure started after an update, choose Roll Back Driver when that button is available. Otherwise choose Uninstall device, restart, and allow Windows to redetect it. Do not check an option to remove the driver package unless you have a replacement from the device manufacturer.
- If the device is not required for startup, Disable device temporarily. If the code stops appearing, re-enable it and install a verified driver from Windows Update or the hardware maker.
Use the exact model and Windows edition when obtaining a driver. Avoid driver packages that do not identify the device, provider, and supported version.
Step 3: install pending Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10.
- Select Check for updates and install available quality, cumulative, and driver updates.
- Restart when prompted, then repeat the check until Windows reports that it is up to date.
- If the code appeared during an update, note the KB number and whether the update is pending, failed, or repeatedly reverting. Do not repeatedly force a shutdown during the installation phase.
Updates can correct operating-system and driver defects, but installing an update does not prove that 0x00249F40 was a Windows Update code. The surrounding message remains the deciding evidence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStep 4: check free space and storage health
Windows needs working space for updates, temporary files, paging, and recovery operations. Microsoft guidance commonly recommends keeping roughly 10–15% of the system drive free. In File Explorer, open This PC and check the free-space bar for the Windows drive.

Remove only files you recognize. Use Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11, or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10, to review temporary files and installed applications. Emptying temporary data is not a guaranteed speed improvement; the purpose here is to provide room for repairs and updates.
If the message names a disk, file system, or storage controller, run the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic utility and review its health report. Back up data first. A disk check can report file-system errors, but it cannot repair a physically failing drive; replace hardware only when diagnostics or repeated I/O errors support that conclusion.
Step 5: repair Windows component and system files
Run these commands when Windows components may be corrupted, several built-in programs fail, or an update repeatedly reports damaged files. Use an administrator account.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. - Enter
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand press Enter. Wait for the operation to reach 100%; it may take time and can appear paused. - After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow. Wait until System File Checker reports its result. - Restart Windows and retry the operation that produced the code.
DISM repairs the component store that supplies Windows files; SFC checks protected system files against that store. If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact message rather than repeatedly running it. Lack of a repair result does not identify 0x00249F40.
Step 6: use recovery tools when the problem follows a recent change
System Restore
When the code began after a driver, application, or update installation, open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore, or use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore in the recovery environment. Select a restore point dated before the change. Personal documents are normally preserved, but applications and drivers installed after the restore point may be removed; review the affected-program list before confirming.
Startup Repair
If Windows cannot boot normally, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. This targets boot configuration and startup files, not every application error. If it reports that it could not repair the PC, keep the report for support and continue with Safe Mode or another recovery option.

Uninstall an update
From Troubleshoot > Advanced options, choose Uninstall Updates when the issue clearly follows a recent quality or feature update. Select the appropriate update type and restart. Avoid removing updates without recording the KB number and the reason.

Reset or reinstall only as a last resort
A Windows reset or clean installation can remove software and settings and may erase data if the wrong option is selected. Do not choose it for an unexplained hexadecimal value until backups, logs, driver checks, and less destructive recovery options have been exhausted.

If it is a recurring blue screen
Check Settings > System > About for the build, then open View advanced system settings > Startup and Recovery and confirm whether Windows is set to create a small memory dump. After the next crash, look in C:WindowsMinidump for a newly dated file. A dump must be interpreted with the stop-code name and driver context; the 0x00249F40 digits alone are insufficient.
If only Windows Update fails
Record the update number and error text, verify free space, disconnect nonessential peripherals, restart, and retry Windows Update. If the failure persists, use System Restore or the recovery option that matches the update stage. The update history under Settings > Windows Update > Update history can show which package first failed.
If one application fails
Repair or reinstall that application using its own supported installer, then check its logs and support documentation. If other programs and Windows functions work normally, a global driver or system-file repair is less likely to address the application-specific code.

Unexpected shutdowns, disk clicking, memory-test failures, overheating, or repeated device disconnects warrant hardware diagnostics. Back up data, run the manufacturer’s tests, and provide the model and test result to the hardware maker or a qualified technician. Do not infer a failed component from 0x00249F40 alone.

Why broad Driver Verifier use is risky
Driver Verifier can deliberately stress drivers to expose defects, but Microsoft warns that indiscriminate verification can make a system unusable. Do not enable every verification option on every driver as a first response to this unidentified code. Use it only when a qualified support process identifies a specific driver and gives instructions for enabling, disabling, and recovering from a boot loop. If Verifier was enabled and Windows will not start, use Safe Mode or the recovery environment to disable it before further testing.
What is known about possible causes
Microsoft’s general stop-error analysis attributes approximately 70% of analyzed crashes to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware issues, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% to unknown causes. Those figures describe Microsoft’s broader stop-error population, not error 0x00249F40, and they cannot predict the cause on an individual PC.
For this code specifically, no authoritative source establishes a connection to Windows Update, WHEA, NTFS, a named driver, or a hardware model. Microsoft’s WHEA guidance is relevant only when the complete message identifies WHEA or a related hardware-error stop condition. Applying a WHEA workflow to the number alone would be speculation.
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
Seek the originating application’s support team when the code appears only in that application and its logs identify a product-specific failure. Contact the device manufacturer when a model-specific driver or diagnostic test is implicated. Use Microsoft support channels for recurring stop errors, failed recovery operations, or corruption that DISM and SFC cannot repair.
Stop using the affected PC and arrange professional service if there is a burning smell, liquid damage, rapidly worsening disk noise, repeated data loss, or a battery that is swelling. Preserve backups and the evidence collected above rather than repeatedly forcing restarts.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review vulnerabilities, and log application crashes on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. It complements antivirus software and does not replace it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. Its free trial is offered by category for at least two days, followed by a paid subscription.
