Error 0x0005F6B7 has no established, universal Windows meaning. The code is not defined in the Microsoft documentation reviewed, so the correct fix depends on where it appears: during an upgrade, in Windows Update, when opening one application, at startup, or after a crash or restart. Treat the code as a symptom, capture its full context, and then follow the matching troubleshooting branch below. Do not assume that a registry edit or a random “error-code fix” applies to every computer.
Microsoft’s installation guidance notes: “There are many reasons why you might receive an error message when upgrading or installing Windows 11, but common errors can be fixed with a few steps that you can do on your own.” The same principle applies here: start with reversible checks, preserve evidence, and move to recovery tools only when the symptom calls for them.

What error 0x0005F6B7 means
No authoritative Microsoft page identified in the available documentation assigns 0x0005F6B7 to a particular Windows component. It may be generated by an application, a hardware or driver package, an installer, or another vendor’s software. The hexadecimal text alone cannot tell you whether the cause is damaged system files, an incompatible driver, an interrupted update, or a problem limited to one program.

That uncertainty is useful: it prevents you from applying the wrong repair. First record the complete message and the event that produced it. A code shown by an installer has a different diagnostic path from the same code shown in an application crash dialog.

Capture the context before changing Windows
- Copy the complete wording. Include the title-bar text, every line below the code, and any file name, module name, or second hexadecimal value. Use a phone photograph if Windows will not let you select the text.
- Record the trigger. Write down the exact action: starting Windows, signing in, installing or upgrading Windows, checking for updates, launching a particular app, connecting a device, or recovering from a blue or black screen.
- Note recent changes. Include Windows updates, newly installed applications, graphics or chipset drivers, new RAM or storage, USB devices, docking stations, and security software added shortly before the first failure.
- Check whether the problem is isolated. Can another user account start? Does the failure affect one application or the whole desktop? Does it disappear in Safe Mode?
- Save evidence. In a working session, open Event Viewer, select Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application, and export entries at the failure time. For an application-only error, also use that program’s own log or crash-report folder.
Do not delete logs or repeatedly reboot before recording them. The time, source, event ID, and faulting module can distinguish a driver fault from an application fault even when the visible dialog is vague.

If more than one row seems to fit, use the row that describes the earliest failure. For example, a black screen that began immediately after a graphics-driver update is a driver/recovery case, not an application-launch case.
Fixes for an installation or upgrade failure
1. Remove avoidable hardware conflicts
Shut down the PC and unplug nonessential USB drives, card readers, printers, external audio interfaces, webcams, and docking hardware. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection needed for setup, and the installation media. Disconnecting a device is a diagnostic step; reconnect one device at a time after Windows is stable so you can identify a trigger.
2. Bring Windows and hardware drivers up to date
Start the existing Windows installation, open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install all available updates, and restart as requested. Then install current drivers supplied for your exact computer model or component, prioritizing storage, chipset, graphics, and network devices. A driver intended for another model or Windows edition can create a new failure, so verify the model and 64-bit or 32-bit edition before installing.
3. Temporarily remove non-Microsoft antivirus
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance includes temporarily removing non-Microsoft antivirus when it interferes with setup. Use that product’s normal uninstall process, restart, and run the upgrade again. Do not leave the PC without protection longer than necessary; reconnect it to a trusted network, complete the upgrade, confirm that Microsoft Defender or your chosen security product is active, and reinstall the current compatible version only after Windows starts normally.

4. Retry with a clean setup state
Close applications, disconnect unnecessary peripherals, and ensure the computer is connected to reliable power. If setup fails again, photograph the complete message and note the percentage or phase at which it stops. Repeating the same attempt without changing the identified condition usually produces the same result and discards useful clues.
Fixes when 0x0005F6B7 appears in Windows Update
Check update history and restart state
Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history and identify the failed update’s name and date. Restart even if Windows does not display a restart request; a pending reboot can block a later transaction. Keep several gigabytes of free space on the system drive, remove only files you recognize, and retry from Settings > Windows Update.
Separate an update problem from an upgrade problem
A monthly update that fails while the desktop remains usable is different from a feature upgrade that rolls back during setup. For a monthly update, preserve the update-history entry and Event Viewer record. If the process enters the full Windows installation or upgrade interface, use the installation branch above instead of repeatedly forcing Windows Update.
Use recovery only if the update leaves Windows unstable
If Windows starts but repeatedly crashes after the update, enter Safe Mode, roll back the implicated driver in Device Manager, or use System Restore to return to a restore point created before the change. If Windows cannot start, follow the WinRE procedure below.
Fixes for an application-launch error
Confirm the scope
Try another application and, if possible, another Windows account. If only one program fails, the hexadecimal code may belong to that vendor rather than Windows. Record the program’s exact name and version, the file named in the dialog, and the time of failure.

Repair or reinstall the affected program
Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the program, choose Advanced options when available, and try Repair. If no repair option exists or it fails, uninstall the program, restart, obtain the installer from the publisher’s official source, and install the version compatible with your Windows edition. Back up application data first; uninstalling can remove local settings.

Review Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Application for a faulting module or side-by-side error. Do not download replacement DLL files from random sites. If security software quarantined a program component, verify the file’s origin with the application vendor before restoring anything. A clean boot or Safe Mode test can reveal a conflict with a startup utility, overlay, shell extension, or background service.
Fixes for a crash, black screen, or unexpected restart
Microsoft notes that unexpected restarts can result from hardware, drivers, or software. Work from the least destructive checks to the most targeted recovery.
1. Remove newly added hardware
Power off and remove recently installed RAM, expansion cards, USB devices, and docks. If the computer becomes stable, reinstall one item at a time and test. For an internal component, follow the manufacturer’s handling and warranty instructions; do not open a sealed device unnecessarily.
2. Start Safe Mode
From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. If Windows cannot reach the sign-in screen, interrupt startup twice; Windows should enter automatic repair on the next boot, where the same Advanced options path is available.

3. Inspect Device Manager
In Safe Mode or normal Windows, right-click Start, choose Device Manager, and look for a yellow warning icon. Open the device’s Properties to read the status code and driver date. Use Driver > Roll Back Driver when the failure began after an update; otherwise use Update Driver with a driver from the computer or component manufacturer. Restart and test after each change.
4. Check updates and disk space
Install current Windows updates once the system is stable enough to do so. In File Explorer > This PC, verify that the system drive is not nearly full. A full drive can prevent updates, paging, crash-dump creation, and restore operations. Remove temporary files through Settings > System > Storage, but keep personal files and recovery partitions.
5. Use System Restore when the timing is clear
Open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore and select a restore point dated before the driver, application, or update change. System Restore affects system files, drivers, and installed programs, not personal documents; review the affected-program list before confirming.

Enter Windows Recovery Environment
If automatic repair does not appear, start from Windows installation media or the manufacturer’s recovery option and choose Repair your computer rather than installing Windows. In WinRE select Troubleshoot > Advanced options. If BitLocker is enabled, have the recovery key available; recovery tools may request it before accessing the Windows volume.

Select Startup Repair and let it complete without powering off the PC. It targets common boot configuration and startup problems. If it reports that it could not repair the PC, save the log at C:WindowsSystem32LogfilesSrtSrttrail.txt when that path is available. The Windows drive letter can differ in WinRE, so confirm the letter before browsing.
Try Safe Mode and remove the triggering change
From Advanced options > Startup Settings, start Safe Mode. Uninstall a recently added driver or application, or use Device Manager to roll back a driver. If Safe Mode works while normal boot does not, a startup service or driver is more likely than a physical display failure.
Repair system files and the disk offline
Use these commands only when the symptom suggests system-file or disk corruption, and identify the Windows volume letter in WinRE first. At Advanced options > Command Prompt, run:
diskpart
list volume
exitAssume the Windows volume is C: only after checking the directory contents with dir C:Windows. If the folder is on another letter, substitute that letter.
Offline System File Checker
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C: /offwindir=C:WindowsWait for the verification to finish and record the result. “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” indicates that SFC changed files; a message that it could not repair some files requires the exact result for support escalation rather than repeated blind runs.
Check the file system and disk surface
chkdsk C: /f /r/f asks CHKDSK to correct file-system errors and /r checks for readable data on bad sectors. The scan can take a long time, especially on a large or failing drive. If it reports extensive errors, back up data as soon as Windows starts or connect the drive to another working system before attempting repeated repairs.
Do not combine arbitrary boot-repair commands or edit the registry simply because the code contains hexadecimal characters. Use those operations only when a Microsoft-documented scenario matches your symptoms and you have a current backup.
What to collect before escalation
- The complete 0x0005F6B7 message and a photograph of the screen.
- The trigger, date and time, recent updates, driver changes, hardware additions, and whether Safe Mode works.
- Event Viewer entries from Windows Logs > System and Application, including source and event ID.
- The affected application’s log or crash report if one program is involved.
Srttrail.txtand the Startup Repair result if WinRE was used.- Any memory dump created after a crash, plus the stop code or faulting module shown by Windows.
- The computer model, Windows edition and build, and the driver version being used when the error occurred.
Give this package to the PC manufacturer for hardware or firmware symptoms, the application publisher for a single-program failure, or Microsoft support for Windows installation, update, and recovery failures. Evidence is more useful than reporting only the hexadecimal code.
Windows 10 support timing
Microsoft ended free Windows Update support, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer can still display this code after that date, but it no longer receives the same continuing security-maintenance path as a supported Windows release. Check your edition and upgrade eligibility before investing time in repeated update troubleshooting.
