Error 0x0002064C is not identified as a standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 Windows Update code. Its meaning depends on where you saw it. An old forum entry places 0002064C inside an Unreal game crash trace, so the value may be an application trace element rather than an operating-system diagnosis. If it appeared during Windows Update or Setup, use the Windows Update procedures below; if it appeared in a game or another application, collect the application and Event Viewer details before changing Windows.
Back up personal files first. Then identify the context, run the built-in troubleshooter when the failure is update-related, and proceed through the reversible checks before resetting the update cache or repairing system files.

First, identify where 0x0002064C appears
The hexadecimal value alone does not identify a cause. Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 update-error tables covered by the available documentation do not define 0x0002064C as a named Windows Update failure. A separate, older forum post shows 0002064C in a line resembling an Unreal game message pump and window-procedure trace. That is a lead, not proof that every occurrence comes from a game.

| Where it appears | What the evidence supports | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Settings, Windows Update, or a cumulative update download/install | The code is not confirmed as a standard Microsoft code, but the failure may still be an ordinary update problem. | Back up files, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and check for updates again. |
| Windows Setup while upgrading or installing | Hardware, drivers, storage, or an incompatible application can block setup even when the displayed value is not a documented Windows Update code. | Disconnect nonessential hardware, check space and compatibility, then retry the upgrade. |
| A game or another application | The old Unreal trace suggests the number can occur as part of an application crash history or trace. It is not a confirmed Windows diagnosis. | Record the complete crash text, application version, and Event Viewer entry; troubleshoot that application first. |
Do not infer that the computer is infected, that a particular component is defective, or that reinstalling Windows is necessary from the hexadecimal value alone.
Prepare before making changes
Back up personal files
Copy documents, photos, project files, saved games, and any other irreplaceable data to a separate drive or a trusted cloud location. An update-cache reset is normally reversible, but upgrade and servicing work can expose an existing disk or file-system problem. A backup gives you a recovery option if the process is interrupted.
Capture the full message
Take a screenshot or write down the complete wording around 0x0002064C. Note whether the message appeared while downloading, installing, restarting, upgrading, launching a program, or closing it. The exact application name, update name, and time of failure are useful when you later inspect logs or contact the software maker.

Confirm administrator access
Several repair actions require an administrator account. If Windows asks for credentials, use an account that is allowed to install updates and change services. Do not continue with an elevated command window if you cannot verify that it belongs to your own Windows installation.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter first
Use this section when the message appears in Windows Update. Microsoft says its Windows Update troubleshooter can help when an error code appears while updates are downloaded or installed.
Windows 11
- Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Update troubleshooter and start the automated troubleshooter.
- Allow it to run its diagnostics and apply the fixes it offers. The automated flow attempts to resolve common update problems.
- Restart the PC when it finishes, even if no repair is reported.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update, then select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any recommended action, restart Windows, and return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update to check again.
If the same value returns, record whether the troubleshooter found a service, database, or configuration issue. That result is more actionable than the code by itself.
Complete the low-risk checks before resetting anything
These checks address conditions that can interrupt an update without producing a consistently documented code.

- Connect a laptop to AC power. Do not close the lid or force a shutdown during an installation or restart.
- Use a stable internet connection. If possible, avoid switching between Wi-Fi and wired networking while the update is downloading.
- Pause bandwidth-heavy transfers and VPN connections temporarily if they interfere with the update connection.
Check free disk space
Open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10. Remove or move files only after confirming they are backed up. Windows needs working space for the downloaded package, temporary files, and the rollback data used during installation; the exact amount varies by update and device.

Set the clock automatically
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time in Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time in Windows 10.
- Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically when those options are available.
- Select Sync now if Windows provides it, then retry the update.
An incorrect clock can interfere with secure connections and update validation.
Disconnect nonessential hardware
Shut down if necessary, then unplug printers, scanners, USB storage, external hard drives, docks, and other accessories that are not required to boot Windows. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and power attached. Reconnect devices one at a time after the update succeeds. A device driver or a setup program waiting for removable hardware can block an upgrade.
Update third-party drivers
Install current drivers from the device manufacturer for hardware that is involved in the failure, especially storage, graphics, network, audio, and chipset devices. Avoid installing several driver packages simultaneously; update one category, restart if requested, and retry so you can identify a change that affects the result.
Clear the Windows Update cache safely
Use this step after the troubleshooter and basic checks have failed. The cache contains downloaded update data. Removing its contents forces Windows to create a fresh working set; it does not remove your personal files.
- Save your work and close Settings and other programs that may be checking for updates.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update. Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the files and folders inside
SoftwareDistribution, not the parent Windows folder. If Windows says an item is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped before trying again. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart the PC, open Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
If you cannot stop the service or receive an access-denied message, do not force-delete files. Recheck administrator access and use the troubleshooter or a supported servicing procedure instead.
Repair Windows system files with System File Checker
Use System File Checker when Windows reports damaged or incorrectly configured system components, or when update failures accompany crashes and unusual Windows behavior. Microsoft cautions that this is an advanced command-line procedure and requires administrator permissions.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- At the elevated prompt, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait for the verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window or power off during the scan.
- Read the final message, restart Windows, and try Windows Update again.
The result tells you whether Windows found and repaired protected files, found corruption it could not repair, or found no integrity violations. Save the wording if the error persists; it helps distinguish a file-integrity problem from a network, hardware, or application problem.
When 0x0002064C appears during an upgrade or installation

- Back up personal files and confirm that the device has reliable power and internet access.
- Disconnect nonessential printers, scanners, USB drives, external hard drives, and docks.
- Check available storage and remove only files you have safely backed up.
- Review recently installed applications. If Windows Setup identifies a specific incompatible application, uninstall that confirmed application, restart, and retry. Do not remove unrelated software solely because the hexadecimal value appeared.
- Update relevant third-party drivers, especially graphics, storage, network, and chipset drivers.
- Run
sfc /scannowfrom an elevated Command Prompt if Windows shows corruption symptoms, then restart. - Retry the upgrade with only essential peripherals attached.
If Setup rolls back, photograph the complete message and note the point at which it failed. The full Setup wording and logs are more useful for diagnosis than 0x0002064C alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the value appears in a game or another application
The old Unreal example places 0002064C between entries such as a window procedure, message dispatch, and a message pump. That format resembles a trace value or crash-history element, not a documented Windows Update status. Treat the application as the primary suspect until evidence points elsewhere.
Collect application evidence
- Record the application or game name, version, launcher, and the exact action that caused the crash.
- Capture the complete dialog or log, including lines before and after
0x0002064C. - Open Event Viewer by pressing Windows key + X > Event Viewer, then inspect Windows Logs > Application around the failure time.
- Note the faulting application, faulting module, exception code, and timestamp if Event Viewer lists them.
Apply application-focused fixes
- Restart Windows and reproduce the problem once to rule out a one-time process failure.
- Install the application’s own update or the version recommended by its publisher.
- Update the graphics, audio, and network drivers that the application uses.
- Temporarily disconnect nonessential USB devices if the application interacts with controllers, capture hardware, or removable storage.
- Use the application’s repair or verify-files function when available. If the publisher provides a documented reset of its configuration or cache, back up saves and settings before applying it.
- If only that application crashes while Windows Update and other programs work normally, report the full trace to the application publisher rather than treating the number as a Windows Update code.
Do not delete random system files or replace DLLs downloaded from unofficial sites. A trace value does not establish that a particular DLL is missing or that Windows itself must be reinstalled.

Use logs when the failure continues
For a Windows Update or Setup failure, write down the date, time, update name, restart count, troubleshooter result, and the exact final message. Check Event Viewer for entries at that time under Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application. For deeper servicing work, Microsoft recommends reviewing Windows Update logs and ensuring that the servicing-stack update matching your Windows version and the current cumulative or rollup updates are installed.
Keep the evidence together: the full screenshot, Event Viewer details, Windows edition and version, available disk space, connected hardware, and the steps that changed the behavior. This prevents repeatedly trying unrelated fixes and gives a support technician enough context to identify the failing component.
Windows 10 support status matters
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The operating system can continue to run, and an individual update failure may still be repairable, but the machine is outside the normal free-support lifecycle. If the hardware meets Windows 11 requirements, plan a supported Windows 11 installation rather than relying indefinitely on Windows 10 servicing.
Windows 11 remains on a supported servicing path, subject to its specific edition and version lifecycle. Check the installed edition and version before downloading a servicing-stack or cumulative update so you select a package that matches the device.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path
| Observation | Next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The message is in Windows Update and no application is named. | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and check again. | This is Microsoft’s first response for update-download and installation errors. |
| The troubleshooter does not resolve it. | Check power, internet, administrator access, date/time, storage, drivers, and external hardware. | These conditions can interrupt servicing without identifying a unique code. |
| The update still fails after those checks. | Stop Windows Update, clear C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, restart the service, and retry. |
A fresh cache removes incomplete or stale downloaded data. |
| Windows reports corruption or behaves abnormally. | Run elevated sfc /scannow, restart, and preserve the result. |
System File Checker tests protected Windows files. |
| Setup fails during an upgrade. | Disconnect nonessential hardware and remove only applications Setup identifies as incompatible. | Upgrade compatibility checks are broader than ordinary update checks. |
| Only one game or application crashes. | Collect its full trace and Event Viewer details and follow the publisher’s repair path. | The number may be an application trace element rather than a Windows status code. |
Optional shortcut after the manual fixes
Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for common Windows problems after you have tried the manual steps. It can address more than 100 common issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that increase CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary and cache files, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days, followed by a subscription. It complements antivirus software and does not replace it, and results vary—no utility repairs every crash.
