How to Fix Error 0x000036E0 on Windows 11 and 10

Error 0x000036E0 is a Windows side-by-side (SxS) manifest parsing error. Windows has found a character where a hexadecimal digit is required in an XML manifest, but the code alone does not identify the damaged application, update, driver, or file. The safest fix is to identify when the message appears, inspect the related log, and then follow the update/setup, application, driver, or recovery path that matches that trigger.

What error 0x000036E0 means

Microsoft’s Win32 error table assigns decimal code 14048 to ERROR_SXS_XML_E_INVALID_HEXIDECIMAL. The documented text is “Manifest Parse Error : Invalid character for hexadecimal digit.” A side-by-side manifest is XML metadata Windows uses to describe an application or component’s assemblies, versions, dependencies, and activation settings. During parsing, one value contains a character that is not valid in the hexadecimal position Windows expects.

This is a data-format failure, not a diagnosis of one particular product. The same status can appear while Windows Update is processing a package, Windows Setup is upgrading the system, one desktop program is starting, or a recovery operation is reading a component. It does not, by itself, prove that Windows is infected, that a hard drive is failing, or that a specific driver is responsible. The event, setup, or application log normally supplies the missing component name or file path.

Start by recording exactly when the message appears

Do not begin by deleting registry entries or installing a generic cleaner. First establish the trigger; it determines which repair is least disruptive.

  1. Write down the action that produced the code. Note whether it appeared when opening one program, installing or updating software, running Windows Update, upgrading Windows, signing in, or starting a recovery option. Record the full wording, date, time, and whether the message is repeatable.
  2. Test the scope. If only one application fails while other programs open normally, use the application branch below. If the code appears during every startup, an update, or a system-wide operation, use the Windows Update/setup or Safe Mode branch.
  3. Check Event Viewer. Press Win, type Event Viewer, and open it. Review Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the recorded time. Also inspect Applications and Services Logs for entries from the installer, Windows Update, SideBySide, or the named application. Look for a component name, manifest path, package identity, or an error immediately before the 0x000036E0 entry.
  4. Save the relevant details. Use Action > Save All Events As or copy the event’s General and Details views. Keep the application installer log or setup log as well. A vendor or Microsoft support engineer can act on a file path and timestamp; the numeric code alone is rarely enough.

If a log names a third-party application, runtime, driver, or installer, treat that named component as the leading suspect. If no component is named, continue with the branch that matches the trigger and preserve the logs for escalation.

Low-risk checks before changing Windows

  • Restart once. A restart clears a locked installer or an incomplete servicing transaction. If the same operation fails again, continue rather than repeatedly rebooting.
  • Check free space. Windows updates, setup, and application repairs need working space for temporary and rollback files. Free space on the system drive before retrying, but do not delete folders you cannot identify.
  • Undo a recent change. If the message began immediately after installing an application, plug-in, runtime, driver, firmware package, peripheral, or Windows update, remove or roll back that change where Windows provides the option, then retest.
  • Install pending Windows updates when Windows still starts. A later servicing update can contain a correction for an installation component. Restart after updates finish and retry the original operation.
  • Temporarily disconnect nonessential hardware. Unplug USB storage, printers, docks, card readers, and other peripherals that are not needed for the operation. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and the device required to complete setup connected.

These checks are reversible and help distinguish a transient transaction from a persistent malformed manifest. They do not replace identifying the component in the logs.

Fix 0x000036E0 during Windows Update

Use this branch when the code appears while Windows is downloading, installing, or completing an update, or when Windows reports that an update could not be installed.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings.
  2. In Windows 11, select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. In Windows 10, select Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Choose Windows Update, select Run (or Run the troubleshooter), and apply any correction it offers.
  4. Restart Windows, open Settings > Windows Update (or Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10), select Check for updates, and retry.

The troubleshooter is appropriate when Windows can still start and the failure is associated with the update service. It may repair a service state or an update configuration, but it cannot repair a malformed manifest belonging to an unrelated application.

Repair the update transaction

If the troubleshooter does not resolve the error, note the update’s knowledge-base number, package name, or component shown in the Windows Update history and Event Viewer. Follow Microsoft’s documented Windows Update component-reset or repair procedure for your Windows edition rather than deleting arbitrary folders. The exact commands and services differ by Windows version; use the procedure that matches the version shown under Settings > System > About (Windows 11) or Settings > System > About (Windows 10).

After the component repair, restart, check for updates again, and record whether the same package fails. If one update repeatedly fails while other updates install, the package or a component it services is more likely than a general Windows failure. Preserve the failure code and package identity before contacting Microsoft support.

Retry with only essential hardware attached

For an update that runs as part of an upgrade or setup sequence, disconnect nonessential USB devices, external drives, printers, docks, and other peripherals. A peripheral can introduce a driver or firmware transaction that fails alongside setup. Reconnect devices one at a time after Windows completes successfully so that a recurrence can be attributed to a particular device.

Fix 0x000036E0 during Windows Setup or an upgrade

When the message appears while moving to a new Windows release or repairing an installation, use a conservative sequence because setup can change system files and boot configuration.

  1. Confirm the edition and architecture. In Settings > System > About, record whether the current system is Windows 10 or 11 and whether it is 64-bit. Use installation media and an upgrade path intended for that edition.
  2. Disconnect nonessential hardware. Remove external storage, printers, docks, USB hubs, and specialty devices. Keep only input, display, network, and power connections needed for setup.
  3. Remove or roll back a recent driver or utility. If setup began failing after a driver, firmware utility, security product, or system-tuning application was installed, undo that change using its supported uninstall or rollback option. Restart before trying setup again.
  4. Check permissions and storage. Run setup from an account with administrative rights, close applications, and ensure the system drive has adequate free space. Do not interrupt setup while it is applying changes.
  5. Retry and inspect setup logs if it fails. Record the exact setup phase and timestamp. Search Event Viewer and the setup logs for the component or manifest path that precedes 0x000036E0. A named driver or application should be handled according to that vendor’s instructions rather than through a universal registry edit.

If setup fails repeatedly after hardware removal and the logs identify the same component, stop repeating the upgrade. Preserve the logs and use the recovery option that matches your situation, described below.

Fix 0x000036E0 when one application will not open

A single-program failure points first to that program’s installation, manifest, dependency, or a recently added plug-in. The Windows error table cannot provide an application-specific repair because the affected publisher and file are different in each case.

Repair the installed application

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Find the affected program, select its More options button (or the program entry), and choose Advanced options when available.
  3. Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish without launching the program during the operation.
  4. Restart Windows and test the application. If the error remains and the page offers Reset, read its warning first: reset can remove the application’s local data or settings.

Not every desktop application exposes Repair or Reset. If neither option exists, use the publisher’s uninstaller or the application’s own maintenance tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall the current version

  1. Back up application documents, profiles, license information, and custom settings according to the publisher’s instructions.
  2. Uninstall the program from Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Restart, then download the current installer from the publisher’s official support or download page. Avoid repackaged installers and files from unverified mirrors.
  4. Install with administrative permission, restart if requested, and test before restoring optional plug-ins or extensions.

Remove a newly added dependency or plug-in

If the failure began after adding a plug-in, runtime, language pack, shell extension, or other dependency, disable or uninstall that addition and retry. Reinstall one component at a time so the change that reintroduces the manifest error is identifiable. If the event names a vendor component, follow that vendor’s repair guidance and send the saved event details with your support request.

Use Safe Mode and Device Manager for recurring system failures

Safe Mode is useful when normal startup repeatedly crashes, freezes, or displays the code before you can inspect logs. It starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services, which helps separate a third-party component from the base system.

Enter Safe Mode from Windows Recovery

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now. Windows will reboot to the recovery menu.
  3. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. When the numbered list appears, choose Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking only if network access is required for a legitimate diagnostic step.

If Windows cannot reach Settings, interrupt startup only as a last resort to enter the Windows Recovery Environment, then use the same Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings path. Avoid repeatedly forcing power-off because it can complicate recovery.

Inspect devices in Device Manager

  1. Press Win+X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand categories related to the recent change, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or the device named in the event log.
  3. Look for a yellow exclamation mark or a device that appeared immediately before the problem.
  4. Open the device’s Properties and review the General and Driver tabs. Use Roll Back Driver when a recent update caused the problem; otherwise use Update Driver with the manufacturer’s current package, or Uninstall device only when you have a supported reinstall path.
  5. Restart and test the operation. Re-enable or reconnect devices one at a time if you disabled or removed more than one.

Also install current Windows, device-driver, BIOS, and firmware updates appropriate to the computer. Obtain firmware and driver packages from the computer or device manufacturer and verify the model before installing; an incorrect package can create a new startup or compatibility problem.

Recover when the error began after a known change

Recovery is more disruptive than a troubleshooter or rollback, so use it only after recording the trigger and preserving logs.

System Restore

If System Restore was enabled and a restore point predates the driver, application, or update change, open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. Choose a restore point, select Scan for affected programs to see what will be changed, and complete the wizard. Personal files are normally left in place, but applications, drivers, and settings installed after the restore point can be removed.

Windows recovery options

From Settings > System > Recovery (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery (Windows 10), select the recovery option that matches the failure. Options can include uninstalling a recent update, returning to a previous version when the eligibility window remains, resetting the PC, or reinstalling Windows. Read each option’s data and application warnings, back up important files, and keep power connected.

A reset or reinstall can remove applications, settings, or files depending on the option selected. Do not choose it merely because the numeric code looks serious; choose it when the logs, timing, and failed lower-risk steps point to a damaged Windows installation and normal repair is no longer practical.

Choose the remedy by trigger, evidence, and risk

Trigger context Best first action Evidence to collect Relative reversibility and risk
Windows Update failure Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, install pending updates, then repair update components if needed Update history entry, package identity, Event Viewer timestamp Low risk initially; component repair changes update services and settings
Windows Setup or upgrade Disconnect nonessential hardware, undo a recent driver or application change, verify permissions and storage Setup phase, setup log, named driver or manifest path Peripheral removal is low risk; repeated upgrades can alter system files
One application Use the app’s Repair option, then reinstall the publisher’s current version Application log, installer log, event naming the file or dependency Repair is usually reversible; reset or reinstall can remove app data and settings
Recurring startup or system crash Enter Safe Mode and inspect Device Manager for recently changed devices Startup timing, SideBySide/System events, driver version and device name Safe Mode and rollback are relatively reversible; uninstalling a device requires a reinstall path
Failure after a known change Roll back the change or use System Restore when an appropriate restore point exists What changed, change date, restore-point details, affected programs list Rollback is less disruptive than reset; recovery can remove applications or settings

What not to do

  • Do not treat the code as a complete diagnosis. It describes the parser’s finding, not the source of the malformed manifest.
  • Do not delete WinSxS, installer, or manifest files manually. Those locations contain shared components; deleting files can make servicing and recovery harder.
  • Do not apply a registry file or driver cleaner without a named component. A generic change can remove registrations needed by unrelated applications and will not correct an unknown XML value.
  • Do not keep retrying a failing setup indefinitely. Each attempt can create additional logs and partial changes without identifying the cause. Stop, preserve evidence, and escalate when the same component fails.
  • Do not disable security controls as a first step. If a vendor’s documented support procedure requires a temporary change, understand how to restore it and re-enable protection immediately after the test.

When to contact Microsoft or the application vendor

Escalate when the error survives the branch that matches its trigger, when Windows cannot start normally, or when the same manifest path appears in repeated logs. Include:

  • Windows edition, version, and whether the system is Windows 10 or 11;
  • the exact 0x000036E0 wording and the operation that produced it;
  • the date and time, time zone, and whether the failure is repeatable;
  • the Event Viewer entry in both General and Details form;
  • the application, setup, or Windows Update log showing the component, package, or file path;
  • recent hardware, driver, firmware, application, plug-in, or update changes;
  • the troubleshooting steps already attempted and their results.

Contact the application or device vendor when its component is named. Contact Microsoft for a Windows Update, Windows Setup, or core recovery component that remains unidentified or fails after the documented Windows paths. This evidence prevents support from guessing and helps avoid an unnecessary reset or reinstall.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for and, where possible, fix more than 100 common Windows issues such as broken system elements or shared DLL problems, while also offering an app-crash log and settings, temporary-file, privacy, and vulnerability checks. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
