Error 0x000036C4 means Windows found a private application manifest through a path that crossed a reparse point, such as a junction or symbolic link. The dependable fix is to identify the application and full path involved, locate the redirection, then restore or reinstall the application in a normal local directory. If the message appears while connecting to a shared printer or network resource, perform the separate sharing checks described below; that scenario does not prove the code itself is a printer error.
What error 0x000036C4 means
Microsoft’s Win32 error reference gives 0x000036C4 the symbolic name ERROR_SXS_PRIVATE_MANIFEST_CROSS_PATH_WITH_REPARSE_POINT and defines it as: “The private manifest probed has crossed the reparse-point-associated path.”

Windows uses side-by-side (SxS) manifests to describe an application’s assemblies, versions, and activation settings. A private manifest is associated with one application rather than being a machine-wide component. A reparse point is a filesystem entry that redirects normal path handling. Common examples are directory junctions, symbolic links, and mounted folders. If Windows reaches an executable or its manifest through one of those redirects and the manifest path crosses the reparse-point boundary, the SxS loader can stop and return 0x000036C4.
The code identifies a relationship between a manifest and a path; it does not identify the application, the person who created the redirect, or the underlying reason it exists. It is therefore not, by itself, evidence of a hardware failure, malware, or a damaged Windows installation. A moved program, a restored backup, a synchronization tool, or a deliberately redirected parent folder can all produce the condition.

Start with the application, installer, service, or Windows action that displayed the message. The exact path is more useful than the hexadecimal number alone.
First, capture the failing context
- Record what was happening. Write down the program name, whether the failure occurred at launch, during installation or update, when a service started, or while accessing a shared resource.
- Copy the complete path. If the dialog includes a filename, copy it. Otherwise open Event Viewer by pressing Win+R, entering
eventvwr.msc, and checking Windows Logs > Application and System for an event at the same time. Record the executable, manifest, and every parent directory shown. - Preserve the original state. Do not delete the application folder, a junction, or registry entries while you are still diagnosing the problem. If the program contains user data, copy that data to a separate backup first.
- Note scope and timing. Determine whether one application fails or several unrelated applications do, and whether the problem began immediately after a move, restore, synchronization, drive-letter change, or storage migration.
These notes let you undo a test and prevent a repair aimed at the wrong program.
Find the reparse point in the application path
Inspect the complete path from the drive root to the executable and manifest, not just the final filename. A redirect in a parent directory can cause the same result as a redirect on the application folder itself.

- Open File Explorer and paste the recorded path into the address bar.
- Work upward one folder at a time. Look for a folder that was created as a junction, symbolic link, or mounted folder, or for a directory whose location was changed by a backup or synchronization program.
- Compare the path you typed with the physical location you expect. A path under a user profile, another volume, a network location, or a redirected program directory deserves particular attention.
- Use the folder’s Properties dialog and the application’s own settings to determine whether the redirect is intentional. Do not assume that a familiar-looking folder is the real target.
Use built-in commands for confirmation
When the folder structure is unclear, open Command Prompt and inspect the parent directory. Replace the example with the path you recorded:

dir "C:PathToParent" /AL /SThe /AL switch asks dir to show directory links, including junctions and directory symbolic links; /S searches below the specified folder. You can also query a suspected entry directly:
fsutil reparsepoint query "C:PathToSuspectedFolder"Run the command from an account permitted to read the folder. “Access denied” is a permissions result, not proof that the folder is ordinary. These commands are for inspection only. Do not use a deletion command until you know whether the entry is a link or the real data directory and have a rollback plan.
Test the application from a normal local path
A controlled path test distinguishes a manifest/path problem from an unrelated application fault. Keep the original installation intact while testing.

C:Program Filesfor a normally installed application or a simple local test folder for a portable program. Do not use another junction, mapped drive, or synchronized redirect for the test. - If the vendor provides an installer, run it and choose the standard local destination. This is safer than manually moving an installed program because installers register files and dependencies that may not be visible in Explorer.
- For a portable application, make a controlled copy of the executable, its private manifest, and the files it needs into the test folder. Copy user data separately; do not overwrite the original.
- Repeat exactly the action that produced 0x000036C4. If the application starts or the installation completes from the ordinary path, the redirect is strongly implicated.
- If the same error appears from the ordinary path, restore the original state and continue with the broader checks below. The path test does not prove that every copy of the program is damaged.
Do not “fix” the result by leaving two competing installations in use. Once the cause is confirmed, select one supported location and remove the obsolete copy through the vendor’s uninstall procedure.

Repair the identified redirection safely
Remove an obsolete junction or symbolic link
If you created the link and it is no longer needed, remove the link itself using the method documented by the tool or script that created it. A correctly removed junction or symbolic link should not delete the target data, but verify the target and back up important files before acting. If you cannot establish which entry is the link, stop and ask the storage, backup, or application vendor for instructions rather than deleting folders at random.
Restore the expected manifest location
Some applications expect the private manifest beside a particular executable or in a vendor-defined subdirectory. Restore that relationship using the application’s supported repair or reinstall option. Do not rename a manifest or edit its contents merely to make the error disappear; an incorrect assembly declaration can create a different startup failure.
Undo a move, restore, or synchronization redirect
If the failure began after restoring or synchronizing a folder, pause the job, preserve the synchronized copy, and restore the application to the location used by its installer. Check the synchronization tool’s option for keeping files online, redirected, or represented by links. The application should be tested against a fully local copy before you remove the backup or cloud copy.

Use the vendor’s uninstaller, restart Windows if it requests one, and install again to a normal local path. Keep application settings and user documents backed up. If the installer itself produces 0x000036C4, place the installer and its temporary extraction directory on the same ordinary local volume and avoid launching it from a redirected or network path.

When Windows repair tools are appropriate
Do not jump to registry edits, update removal, or a blanket component repair simply because the number looks serious. The code’s definition points first to a path/manifest relationship, and there is no single Microsoft procedure established to repair every instance.
Consider Windows component repair only when several unrelated applications fail from ordinary local paths, Windows features show additional corruption, or servicing errors accompany the event. Back up first, connect the computer to reliable power, and use an administrator account. The standard built-in checks are:
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to finish. A successful completion does not prove that this particular error was caused by component corruption. - Run
sfc /scannowafter DISM completes, then restart Windows. - Retest the original application from its normal path. If only that application still fails, return to its manifest and installation rather than repeating system repairs.
These commands can repair broader Windows component issues, but they are not a guaranteed or universal 0x000036C4 fix. Avoid third-party registry cleaners and do not delete side-by-side component folders manually.
If the message appears during printer or network sharing
Microsoft’s sharing guidance identifies network settings, share configuration, credentials, driver mismatches, and Windows security changes as common causes of shared-printer failures. Those checks are relevant when the code appears in that scenario, but they do not establish that 0x000036C4 itself is a printer error. Keep the manifest/reparse-point investigation separate from connectivity troubleshooting.
Verify the host and share
- On the computer physically connected to the printer, confirm that the printer is shared and record the exact share name.
- Ensure both computers are connected to the same network. On the client, open File Explorer and enter
\ComputerName. The host should respond and display its shared resources. - When prompted, enter credentials valid for the host computer. A Microsoft account, local account, or work account must match what the host accepts; guessing a username can produce an apparently unrelated failure.
Use the correct network profile and discovery services
On a trusted home or office network, set the connection to Private. In Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet, select Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and set Network profile type to Private. In Windows 10, open Settings > Network & Internet > Status and open the connection’s properties.
Turn on Network discovery and File and printer sharing in Settings or in Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change advanced sharing settings. Only enable these features on a network you trust.
If the host is not discoverable, check the Services console (services.msc) for Function Discovery Provider Host, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host. Their startup state and firewall access can affect discovery. Changing services on a managed work computer may require an administrator or IT policy.
Add the shared printer explicitly
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device (or Add a printer or scanner), wait briefly, then choose Add manually when automatic discovery does not find it.
- Choose the option to select a shared printer by name and enter
\ComputerNamePrinterShareName, using the host and share names you recorded. - If name resolution fails, try the host’s IP address in the same form, for example
\192.0.2.25PrinterShareNameusing the host’s actual address. Confirm the address with the host administrator; do not use the example address.
If the explicit path works while discovery does not, the remaining fault is network discovery or name resolution, not necessarily the SxS manifest condition. If the printer fails only after a driver change, investigate the printer driver separately rather than deleting application links.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Deleting every junction. Windows and applications may use links intentionally. Remove only the specific redirect you identified and understand.
- Assuming the code names the broken program. It does not. The event, dialog, and full path provide the missing context.
- Moving only the executable. A private manifest, assemblies, configuration files, and permissions may still point to the original layout.
- Editing the registry first. The code describes a filesystem path relationship; an unrelated registry change can make recovery harder.
- Treating a printer symptom as proof of a printer-code match. Verify sharing, credentials, discovery, and the explicit share path independently.
- Running system repairs repeatedly without a scope check. If one program fails from a redirected folder and every other program works, repair that program’s path instead.
A practical decision path
- If the error identifies one program and began after a move, restore, or synchronization event, inspect every parent directory for a reparse point.
- If the program works from a standard local installation, repair or remove the redirect and keep the supported installation.
- If the program still fails from a normal path, use the vendor’s repair or reinstall process and examine the event’s full manifest path.
- If multiple unrelated applications fail from ordinary local paths, check for broader Windows component symptoms and consider DISM/SFC with the limitations described above.
- If the only failure is a shared printer or network resource, follow the host, network profile, discovery, credentials, and explicit UNC-path checks instead of assuming the manifest code explains the connection problem.
