Error 0x0000277A is Windows Sockets (Winsock) error WSAEPROVIDERFAILEDINIT, decimal 10106: Windows could not load or initialize a requested network service provider. The number does not identify the provider, so the reliable fix is staged isolation rather than one universal command. Restart first, reset the Winsock catalog, then test the software, drivers and startup services that changed before the error appeared. If the problem survives those checks, use Safe Mode, Windows recovery and the evidence you collected to identify the failing component.
The procedure below applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10. It distinguishes an error affecting one application from a system-wide networking failure, explains what each step can and cannot prove, and shows when a rollback, restore or support escalation is safer than repeated resets.

What 0x0000277A means
Microsoft’s Win32 error reference defines 0x0000277A (decimal 10106) as WSAEPROVIDERFAILEDINIT: “The requested service provider could not be loaded or initialized.” A Winsock provider is a software component that applications use to reach Windows networking functions. It can be supplied by Windows itself or by software such as a VPN, proxy, firewall, traffic monitor, security product or a network driver package.
The code is therefore a provider-initialization failure, not a Windows activation code and not a blue-screen identifier. The hexadecimal value alone cannot tell you which DLL, driver, service or application failed. The affected program, the complete message, Event Viewer details, recent network-software changes and driver history are needed to attribute the failure.

A provider error can be limited to one application or can prevent several programs from connecting. That distinction determines how aggressively you should change the system.
Before changing anything: define the failure
Record the exact context
Write down the application or service that displayed the message, the full wording around the code, and the action that triggered it. Note whether browsers, Windows Update and other network-dependent programs still work. Record the Windows edition and build by pressing Win+R, entering winver, and selecting OK.

These are investigative leads, not proof of a universal cause. A VPN removal, for example, may leave a provider entry on one computer but not another.

Fix 0x0000277A in the safest order
1. Restart Windows and repeat the same operation
Save work, close the affected application and choose Start > Power > Restart. Sign in and perform exactly the action that produced the error. A provider that failed during one startup can initialize normally after a clean reboot. A restart changes little and risks no personal data, but it is only a first test; if the error returns, continue rather than repeatedly rebooting.

2. Reset the Winsock catalog
The Winsock catalog records networking providers and their order. Resetting it removes the catalog’s current registrations and lets Windows rebuild the standard configuration.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
netsh winsock resetand press Enter. - Wait for the completion message, close Command Prompt and restart Windows.
- Retry the same application or network operation.
This command requires administrator permission. It is a diagnostic and repair step, not a guaranteed cure: the error identifies a failed initialization but not the specific provider. Software that installs its own network provider may need its supported repair or reinstall process after the reset. If a VPN, proxy or security component stops functioning, repair that product through its own installer or support instructions instead of repeatedly resetting Winsock.

If the timing points to a VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus component, traffic monitor or similar network filter, use that product’s supported Repair, Modify or uninstall process, then restart and test. Remove only the component implicated by your timeline; changing several products at once destroys useful diagnostic information.
Do not leave security protection permanently disabled. If you must temporarily stop a security component to test whether it is involved, keep the test brief, disconnect from untrusted networks where practical, and restore protection immediately afterward. If the error disappears when a product is absent, contact its vendor for an updated build or cleanup procedure rather than assuming every installation of that product causes 0x0000277A.
4. Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files, drivers and services. If the error disappears there, a startup service or third-party provider becomes more likely; Safe Mode does not by itself identify which one.

On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and use Restart now under Advanced startup. After the blue recovery screen appears, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. When the numbered list appears, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode; choose the networking option only when you specifically need network access for the test.

- Works in Safe Mode: concentrate on third-party startup services, network filters and recently changed drivers or applications.
- Still fails in Safe Mode: a Windows component, device driver loaded in Safe Mode, damaged configuration or the application itself remains possible.
- Different behavior with and without networking: note that distinction for the next isolation step; Safe Mode with Networking loads additional components.
Restart normally to leave Safe Mode. Do not delete providers or services merely because they are present; identify the change that correlates with the failure first.
5. Inspect Device Manager and network drivers
A network adapter or virtual adapter driver can participate in provider initialization. In normal Windows, right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand Network adapters and any related device category. A yellow warning icon, a device that vanished after an update, or a driver date that matches the start of the problem is useful evidence.
For the device that changed, open its Properties and check the General and Driver tabs. Choose the least disruptive action that fits the evidence:

- Update driver: use Windows’ search or the hardware maker’s supported package when a newer compatible driver is available.
- Roll Back Driver: use this when the error began after a recent driver update and the button is available.
- Disable device: a temporary isolation test for a nonessential adapter; re-enable it immediately if it is not involved.
- Uninstall device: reserve this for a driver known to be damaged or incorrectly installed, and follow the manufacturer’s reinstall guidance.
Do not uninstall an essential network adapter without another way to obtain its driver. If the problem is tied to a virtual adapter created by a VPN or similar product, use that product’s supported removal procedure as well.
6. Install available Windows and hardware-driver updates
Microsoft recommends applying available Windows updates and relevant hardware-driver updates while troubleshooting recurring Windows failures. Open Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10, select Check for updates, install applicable updates and restart when requested. Check the device manufacturer for a compatible network-driver package if Device Manager indicates one is needed.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. From that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update support, technical assistance or security fixes for ordinary Windows 10 installations. A Windows 10 machine can still run, but update availability and support expectations differ from Windows 11. Confirm the edition and build before assuming an update will be offered.
7. Review event details for the provider name
When the error recurs, open Event Viewer from the Start menu and review entries logged at the same time under the Windows or application logs relevant to the failure. Look for the application name, service name, module or provider DLL, and any accompanying error text. Copy the complete entry rather than relying on the hexadecimal code alone.
Event logs can be noisy and may show a symptom instead of the root cause. Treat a provider name as a lead to verify against your recent software and driver changes, not as proof that a component is defective.
8. Use System Restore or another recovery option when the timing is clear
If 0x0000277A began after a known installation, update or configuration change and the earlier steps did not isolate it, Windows recovery can return system settings to an earlier state. Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, and review the available recovery choices. System Restore is appropriate only when a restore point predates the failure and the change is worth reversing.
Recovery options differ by edition, configuration and the condition of the installation. Read the stated effect before confirming: some choices preserve personal files but remove applications or settings, while reset or reinstall operations can remove data. Back up important files first, keep the device connected to power and ensure you have installation credentials and product information needed afterward.
9. Escalate with a reproducible evidence package
Contact Microsoft support or the affected application’s vendor when the provider remains unidentified or the failure returns after recovery. Include:
- Windows edition, version and build from
winver - The application or service name and complete error text
- Whether the failure is app-specific or system-wide
- The Event Viewer entry and timestamp
- Recent VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus, driver and Windows changes
- Whether a restart,
netsh winsock resetand Safe Mode changed the result - The Device Manager status of relevant adapters
This information lets support investigate the actual provider instead of treating 0x0000277A as a generic networking failure.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the code names the culprit: 0x0000277A reports provider initialization failure, not a particular VPN, antivirus, DLL or driver.
- Resetting Winsock repeatedly: one reset followed by a restart and controlled retest provides more information than a cycle of identical resets.
- Changing several network products together: you may remove the evidence needed to identify the failing provider.
- Leaving protection disabled: a troubleshooting test is not a safe permanent configuration.
- Deleting unfamiliar DLLs or registry entries: the code does not justify manual deletion, and doing so can create a larger startup or networking failure.
- Skipping backups before recovery: restore, reset and reinstall choices have different effects on applications, settings and files.
When the error is not actually a Windows-wide outage
If only one application reports the code and browsers or other network programs work, first use that application’s own update, repair, reset and support options. Check whether it relies on a proxy, VPN tunnel, security plug-in or virtual adapter that other applications do not use. A system-wide Winsock reset may be unnecessary in that case and can disturb unrelated network software.
If every network-dependent application fails, the evidence favors a system-wide catalog, provider, startup service or driver issue. Follow the staged sequence: restart, one Winsock reset, Safe Mode comparison, Device Manager review, updates and then recovery if the timing supports it.
