Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Error 0x000025F4 means DNS_WARNING_DOMAIN_UNDELETED: the Windows DNS Server recorded that a DNS domain believed to be deleted was undeleted, restored, or remained present. It is a DNS-server warning, not automatically a Windows 10 or Windows 11 desktop failure. The correct fix is to identify the DNS zone, check which server is authoritative, inspect Active Directory replication when the zone is AD-integrated, and remove or restore the zone only through your approved DNS administration process.
Before changing anything, verify that 0x000025F4 is the error field. In WSUS, MECM, and other management logs, the same-looking 25F4 may be a thread or process identifier rather than the failure code. The surrounding provider, field label, HRESULT, event ID, and message determine which troubleshooting path applies.

What error 0x000025F4 means
Microsoft’s Win32 reference defines hexadecimal 0x000025F4 as DNS_WARNING_DOMAIN_UNDELETED, with the description “DNS domain was undeleted.” The name belongs to the Windows DNS Server error namespace. It describes a change in DNS-domain state; it does not, by itself, identify a broken Windows client, a failed update, malware, or a damaged system file.

Whether users experience an outage depends on the zone, the records inside it, and which DNS servers answer client requests. Treat the event as an administrative consistency signal first, not as proof that every Windows computer needs a registry repair.

Confirm that 0x000025F4 is really the error code
Read the complete event or log record. Do not troubleshoot from a fragment copied from a console, screenshot, or filename. Capture the following fields:
- Provider or component name, such as DNS Server, WSUS, MECM, Windows Update, or an application.
- Event ID and timestamp.
- The label attached to the number: error code, HRESULT, status, process ID, thread ID, offset, or another field.
- The complete message text.
- The server or computer that emitted the record.
- The DNS zone or operation named in the message, if any.
A Microsoft Q&A WSUS/MECM log illustrates the trap: 9716 (0x25F4) appears as a thread identifier while the same record reports ImportUpdateError and HRESULT 0x80131500. In that situation, 0x25F4 is not evidence of a DNS-domain warning. The HRESULT and the import operation are the starting points.

| What you see | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
0x000025F4 in a DNS Server error or status field, with “DNS domain was undeleted” |
The DNS warning defined by Microsoft | Follow the DNS-zone and replication workflow below. |
9716 (0x25F4) beside “thread,” “worker,” or “process” |
An identifier printed in a management log | Troubleshoot the provider’s actual HRESULT and message instead. |
0x25F4 attached to an update operation without DNS wording |
A context-dependent value or identifier | Use the Windows Update path only after confirming the field and operation. |
Identify where the message came from
Use the source to choose the repair. The same hexadecimal characters do not guarantee the same meaning outside the DNS Server namespace.
| Source or context | First question | Correct direction |
|---|---|---|
| DNS Server event log or DNS Manager | Which zone was undeleted, and which server owns the authoritative copy? | Inspect the zone, authority, and replication; then use the supported DNS management path. |
| Domain controller or Active Directory administration | Is the zone AD-integrated, and are all domain controllers converged? | Check replication health before repeating a deletion or restoration. |
| WSUS or MECM log | Is 25F4 a thread/process ID while another HRESULT identifies the failure? |
Use the real operation and HRESULT; do not delete a DNS zone based on the ID. |
| Windows Update or upgrade screen | Is the value explicitly attached to download or installation? | Use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance and the applicable update error details. |
| Application log | Does the application define its own status field? | Follow that application’s documentation and retain the full record for escalation. |
Manual DNS repair workflow
Perform these steps on the DNS infrastructure that owns the zone. A logged-on Windows 10 or Windows 11 user normally cannot correct an authoritative server or Active Directory replication problem from the desktop alone.

- Preserve the evidence. Export or copy the entire event, including provider, event ID, time, server name, zone name, field labels, and message text. Record what deletion, restoration, migration, or directory change occurred immediately before the warning. Keep the original record even if the warning disappears.
- Locate the zone. Open DNS Manager on the relevant DNS server (commonly through Server Manager > Tools > DNS) and find the forward- or reverse-lookup zone named by the event. Confirm spelling, suffix, and whether the record is a zone or a child domain. If no matching zone exists on that server, do not create or delete one yet; identify the server that actually answers authoritatively.
- Determine the zone type. Establish whether the zone is Active Directory-integrated or file-backed. This distinction controls where the authoritative data lives and which servers can recreate it.
- Identify the authoritative owner. For an AD-integrated zone, determine which writable domain controller should receive the change. For a file-backed zone, identify the DNS server and zone-file owner designated by your organization. A replica, secondary, or cached view may display the zone without being the place where the authoritative change should be made.
- Check replication and server health before another deletion. In an AD-integrated environment, inspect Active Directory replication status and the participating domain controllers. Look for a stale or disconnected replica, a domain controller that has not received the deletion, or an authoritative data source that still contains the zone. Repeating the deletion while replication is unhealthy can make the state harder to understand and can allow the zone to return.
- Back up and create a change record. Follow your organization’s DNS and Active Directory backup procedure. Note the zone name, current records, server, administrator, time, and intended result. The warning concerns shared infrastructure; an unrecorded change can remove records needed by applications or authentication.
- Use the supported management path. If the zone should no longer exist, remove it from DNS Manager or the approved DNS/Active Directory administration procedure on the authoritative server. If the zone should exist, restore or retain it through the same supported path and correct the underlying directory or replication condition. Do not begin by deleting arbitrary registry values, manually removing Active Directory database entries, or erasing zone files outside the management tools.
- Wait for convergence. Allow the organization’s normal replication and DNS refresh intervals to pass. Do not assume that a successful click on one server means every domain controller has the same state.
- Verify on every relevant server. Reopen DNS Manager, review DNS Server events, and compare the zone’s presence and records across the authoritative server and its replicas. Confirm that the warning no longer appears for new operations and that required name resolution still works for the applications that use the zone.
- Investigate recurrence before repeating the change. If the zone returns, identify the replication partner, directory operation, migration job, or other authoritative data source that recreated it. Correct that source first. A recurring warning is usually a consistency problem, not a reason to apply increasingly aggressive client-side fixes.
AD-integrated zones: what to check
An AD-integrated zone is stored and replicated through Active Directory rather than being managed as a single isolated file on one DNS server. That makes replication health and authority central to this warning.
Find the writable domain controller
Determine which writable domain controller is intended to accept the deletion or restoration. A read-only domain controller or a secondary copy can show the zone but may not be the correct place to make the change. Use your normal domain-controller inventory and DNS administration records rather than guessing from the client that displayed the event.

Compare replicas before changing data
Check whether all relevant domain controllers agree about the zone. A stale replica can preserve a zone that another server believes was deleted; when replication resumes, that stale data can reintroduce it. Record the servers with different views and address the replication fault before attempting another deletion.
Separate DNS symptoms from directory symptoms
If DNS Manager shows the expected zone but clients cannot resolve names, inspect the records, delegation, server reachability, and client resolver configuration separately. The DNS_WARNING_DOMAIN_UNDELETED message only describes the domain’s deletion state; it does not identify every possible cause of a resolution failure.

File-backed zones: a different authority model
A file-backed zone is maintained by the DNS server designated to host its zone data rather than by Active Directory replication. The key questions are therefore which server owns the zone file, whether another server is acting as a secondary, and which copy your change-control process treats as authoritative.
- Confirm the zone and server in DNS Manager.
- Check whether a secondary or restored server still has an older copy.
- Use the approved DNS management procedure to remove or retain the zone.
- Do not delete or edit the underlying zone file directly unless that is explicitly part of your organization’s documented recovery procedure.
- Verify the result on the primary and all secondary servers after transfer or synchronization.
If a file-backed zone repeatedly reappears, look for an automated restore, provisioning process, or secondary synchronization source. The objective is to identify the system supplying the old data, not merely to remove the visible copy again.
When the message is actually related to Windows Update
Use the update workflow only when the complete record shows that the value belongs to a Windows Update download, installation, or upgrade operation. Microsoft documents a Windows Update troubleshooter for Windows 10 and Windows 11. On current Windows 11 builds, it is generally available under Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update. On Windows 10, the corresponding path is generally Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update; labels can vary by release.

For an upgrade or installation failure, Microsoft’s general guidance includes disconnecting nonessential external hardware and consulting the applicable error-code table. Those steps can help an update operation, but they do not repair a DNS zone or Active Directory replication. If the log shows 9716 (0x25F4) as a thread identifier and reports a different HRESULT, troubleshoot that HRESULT and the named operation instead.
What not to do
- Do not assume every appearance of
25F4isDNS_WARNING_DOMAIN_UNDELETED. - Do not delete registry keys, Active Directory database records, or zone files at random.
- Do not repeat a DNS deletion while replication is unhealthy or while the authoritative owner is unknown.
- Do not run a Windows Update troubleshooter for a DNS Server warning simply because the computer runs Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Do not treat the warning as proof of malware or as a guaranteed explanation for a client crash.
When to escalate
Involve the DNS or Active Directory administrator when the zone is business-critical, multiple domain controllers disagree, the zone returns after deletion, or the authoritative server cannot be identified. Provide the complete event, affected zone, server list, replication observations, change history, and the exact result seen after the supported management action. Escalate to the WSUS/MECM owner instead when the value is only a thread or process ID and the real failure is an import HRESULT or application message.
Quick Recap
Verification checklist
- The complete record contains
0x000025F4in an error or status field, not merely beside an ID. - The provider and message establish whether the source is DNS Server, Active Directory, WSUS/MECM, Windows Update, or an application.
- The affected zone name and zone type are recorded.
- The authoritative DNS server or writable domain controller is identified.
- Replication or secondary synchronization is checked before another deletion.
- A backup and change record exist.
- The zone was changed through DNS Manager or the organization’s approved administration procedure.
- DNS Server events, DNS Manager, and all relevant servers show the intended state after convergence.
- If the warning recurs, the system that recreated the zone is identified before another removal.
If you want an optional shortcut for general Windows troubleshooting after confirming that this is not an authoritative DNS-zone problem, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, and provide crash-log information. Its category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription; results vary, it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and no tool repairs every crash.
