Error 0x0000217A means ERROR_DS_NOT_SUPPORTED_SORT_ORDER: “The sort order requested is not supported.” It is a Windows directory-service status, normally raised when Active Directory, an LDAP query, an administrative console, or an application requests an ordering that the service or client does not support. The practical fix is to identify that operation and change its sort or ordering request.
Do not confuse 0x0000217A with 0xC000021A. The latter is a separate fatal system error involving a user-mode subsystem and requires a stop-error troubleshooting path. Use the steps below to determine which situation you actually have before changing Windows.

Confirm which error you have
Write down the code exactly as displayed, including every zero and letter. A directory-service entry in an application log is fundamentally different from a blue or black screen that stops Windows and restarts the computer.

The shorter hexadecimal value is not an alternative spelling of the longer one. Applying blue-screen repairs to an ordinary directory-service status can leave the real query problem untouched.

Capture the context before changing anything
- Copy the complete message. Record the code, the text beside it, the program or console that displayed it, and the date and time.
- Record the Windows edition and build. Open Settings > System > About on Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Settings > System > About. Note whether the computer is Windows 10 or 11 and the installed OS build.
- Identify the trigger. Decide whether the message appeared while running an Active Directory Users and Computers task, an LDAP search, a script, a domain-management application, or a normal desktop program.
- Check what happened to Windows. If the session continued and only the operation failed, treat the event as a directory-service status. If Windows halted, showed a stop screen, or restarted, follow the separate crash branch later in this guide.
- Preserve the original log entry. Save the event details or copy the full text before retrying. The query name, server name, requested sort field, and timestamp can be essential when an administrator or software vendor investigates.
Fix 0x0000217A when an Active Directory or LDAP operation raised it
1. Locate the operation that requested the sort
Start with the exact action that failed. In a graphical administrative tool, note the view, search, column sort, or report being generated. In a script or application, identify the directory query issued at that time. If several tasks run together, reproduce them one at a time so the failing request is isolated.
The code definition does not specify one universal command or a Windows 10/11 hotfix. The supported correction depends on the client and the directory service receiving the request.
2. Inspect the related events
- Press Win + X and open Event Viewer.
- Review Windows Logs > Application for an entry at the failure time. Also inspect any application-specific or directory-service log exposed by the software that made the request.
- Open the event’s General and Details tabs. Record the query, LDAP operation, server or domain controller, attribute used for ordering, and any accompanying status text.
- Compare the timestamp with the tool’s own log. A directory-service event and an application error recorded seconds apart are often the same failed request.
Look for an explicit sort or order parameter rather than treating the hexadecimal value as a hardware, disk, or memory diagnosis.

3. Make the ordering request one the service and client support
Change the failing search or report so it does not request the unsupported ordering. Depending on the software, that can mean selecting a different sortable attribute, removing an optional sort, using the tool’s default order, or updating the application’s query configuration. Make one change at a time and document the original setting so it can be restored.
If the request is generated by a script or a line-of-business application, the person who maintains that code may need to alter the LDAP request. The exact attribute and syntax are application-specific; do not paste a generic command into production without confirming what the client sends to the directory.
4. Test against the intended directory server
Repeat the same operation against the same domain controller or directory endpoint. If the request succeeds against one server but not another, capture both server names and times for the domain administrator. That comparison helps separate a client-side query setting from a server-side capability or configuration difference without assuming that the error is a Windows-wide failure.

5. Check domain and account context
Confirm that the computer is connected to the expected organization or domain. In Windows 11, view Settings > Accounts > Access work or school; in Windows 10, use the same page to see connected work or school accounts. Under Settings > System > About, check the device’s related organization information where it is shown. These screens do not repair an unsupported sort, but they help verify that the failed operation was sent to the directory you intended.
If the error occurs only for one user, one report, or one application, preserve that scope in your incident notes. A narrow reproduction is more useful than repeatedly retrying unrelated directory tasks.
6. Retest and verify the logs
- Run the corrected query or administrative action once.
- Confirm that the expected records are returned and that the ordering is acceptable to the application.
- Check the application and directory-service logs for a new
0x0000217Aentry at the retest time. - If the code returns, capture the new request details rather than reverting immediately to an unsupported sort.
When 0x0000217A appears with crashes or restarts
A machine that repeatedly halts, shows a blue or black stop screen, or restarts may have a separate Windows stop error. The directory-service code alone does not establish that a hardware device, driver, or user-mode subsystem caused the crash. Use this branch only when Windows itself is failing.

Start Windows in Safe Mode
- Hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart, or open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now on Windows 11. Windows 10 uses Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Choose 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- Check whether the restart or stop condition occurs in Safe Mode. If it does not, a normally loaded driver or startup program becomes a stronger suspect; if it does, continue with logs and diagnostics.
Review Event Viewer around the failure
Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application. Filter or sort entries by the failure time and read the full event details. Note any named driver, service, application, or crash signature, but do not assume that the nearest warning is the cause. Correlate the event with the stop-screen text or dump information if Windows supplied it.
Install pending Windows and driver updates
Use Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10. Select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when requested. For a device named in the crash information, obtain the current driver through the device manufacturer or your organization’s approved update process. Record what changed before testing again.

- Save open work and search Start for
Windows Memory Diagnostic, or runmdsched.exe. - Select Restart now and check for problems when you can allow an immediate reboot.
- Let the test complete. After Windows starts, review the reported result and the related event in Event Viewer.
A memory result is evidence about the memory test, not proof that the directory query was valid. Keep the two investigations separate.
Use Windows recovery options if the system remains unstable
From Settings > System > Recovery (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery (Windows 10), use the available recovery tools appropriate to the situation. Advanced startup also provides System Restore, Uninstall Updates, and Startup Repair on systems where those options are available. Choose a restore point or update removal only after checking its date and documenting what software or update will be rolled back.
Analyze a crash dump only for a genuine bug check
Windows bug checks halt the operating system to protect against data loss and may record the executing module and a crash dump. Dump analysis is useful when the computer actually produced a bug-check screen or dump file. It is not a repair method for the ordinary ERROR_DS_NOT_SUPPORTED_SORT_ORDER status shown by a directory tool.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not rewrite the code. Dropping zeros or changing it to
0xC000021Asends the investigation down the wrong path. - Do not apply random registry edits or repair commands. No single universal command is established for this directory-service status.
- Do not assume a physical hardware fault. The code identifies an unsupported sort request, not a failed disk, memory module, graphics card, or network adapter.
- Do not treat a nearby warning as proof of causation. Match event times and the operation that was running.
- Do not keep retrying an unchanged query. Repeated attempts add noise to logs without changing the unsupported ordering.
Verification checklist
- The exact value and message were copied from the original event.
- You know whether the event came from a directory operation or a Windows stop screen.
- The failing query, application, server, and requested ordering are recorded.
- The ordering was changed or removed in the client that issued the request.
- The corrected operation completed and produced the expected records.
- Any separate crash was tested in Safe Mode and correlated with Event Viewer, updates, memory diagnostics, or recovery results.
- Any recurrence has a fresh timestamp and log entry for the administrator or application owner.
