Error 0x0000200A is the Windows directory-service code ERROR_DS_NO_ATTRIBUTE_OR_VALUE. Microsoft defines it as: “The specified directory service attribute or value does not exist.” It usually means that an application, administrator tool, or provisioning job requested an Active Directory attribute or value that is absent, invalid for the object, hidden by permissions, or not yet consistent across domain controllers. It is not, by itself, a general Windows desktop failure.
The correct repair depends on where the code appeared, which object and attribute were involved, and which domain controller answered the request. Follow the directory checks below before changing schema or object data. If the message appeared only during Windows Update or Windows setup, use the separate update workflow later in this guide.

What error 0x0000200A means
0x0000200A maps to ERROR_DS_NO_ATTRIBUTE_OR_VALUE, a directory-service error. In practical terms, the operation expected an attribute or a value and the directory could not provide it. The requested item might be missing from the object, misspelled in a query, unsupported by the object’s class, unavailable on the selected domain controller, or concealed from the account making the request.

Why the screen or tool that showed the code matters
Start by identifying the workflow in which the error occurred. The same status can be surfaced by different components, and the repair must match that context.
| Where it appeared | Likely area to investigate first | Typical safe correction |
|---|---|---|
| Administrative application or provisioning job | The application’s object mapping, requested LDAP display name, and target object class | Correct the query or mapping, then rerun the job |
| PowerShell or an LDAP query | Attribute spelling, LDAP syntax, filter construction, permissions, and the selected domain controller | Fix the request or use an account with the required read rights |
| Active Directory Users and Computers or another directory console | Whether the attribute is valid for the object class and whether the object contains a value | Populate or restore only a schema-valid value through change control |
| Different results from different domain controllers | Replication health, naming context, and directory-service logs | Repair the replication condition and allow convergence before editing data |
| Windows Update, upgrade, or setup screen | The update or installation workflow, not automatically the directory schema | Use the Windows Update/setup steps in this article and preserve the exact setup message |
Also record the scope. An error affecting one object points toward an object value, class, or mapping problem. An error affecting many objects suggests a shared query, schema, permissions, or replication issue. A result that differs by server points toward controller consistency rather than a simple missing value.
Before changing directory data: capture the evidence
Do not begin by deleting an object, editing the registry, or downloading a “fixer.” First create a short incident record so that every later comparison uses the same facts.

- Write down the application, console, script, provisioning task, or setup screen that displayed it.
- Record the exact command, LDAP filter, property name, or action that failed. Preserve capitalization and punctuation.
- Capture the target object’s full distinguished name (DN), not only its display name.
- Record the requested attribute’s LDAP display name, the domain, and the domain controller or server named in the message.
- Note the account or service identity used for the operation and the exact date and time, including the time zone.
- Save relevant application output and the associated Directory Service, replication, and application log entries.
This information lets you distinguish a bad request from a missing value and a local controller problem from a directory-wide condition. It also gives a change-review or recovery team enough context to reverse an edit safely.

Manual troubleshooting workflow
1. Confirm the attribute name and request
Compare the attribute in the failing request with the directory’s LDAP display name. A friendly label shown in an administrative console is not necessarily the name expected by an LDAP filter or application mapping. Check for misspellings, wrong separators, aliases that the application does not support, and a request sent to the wrong object.
If the operation constructs a filter or mapping dynamically, inspect the generated request rather than only the configuration screen. A template can silently substitute an obsolete name or an empty value. Correct the request first and test it against the same object and controller that produced the error.
2. Verify that the schema defines the attribute
Confirm that the requested attribute exists in the directory schema. If it is not defined, the operation cannot succeed by adding a random property name. Determine whether the application was written for a different schema version, a retired extension, or another directory environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not introduce a schema extension merely to silence one error. Schema changes are broad, durable changes that require an approved design, backup, testing, and organizational change control. If the attribute is a legitimate custom extension, use the organization’s documented process to verify its definition and deployment before touching production.

3. Check the target object class and attribute rules
An attribute can exist in the schema yet still be invalid for the target object. Verify the object’s class and whether that class permits the attribute. Check the attribute’s syntax and whether it accepts the kind of value the application is sending. A value intended for one class cannot automatically be copied to another object type.
Look for recently changed object classes, moved objects, or provisioning rules that select the wrong class. If the object was recreated, its distinguished name may look familiar while its class or optional attributes differ from the original.
4. Determine whether the object actually has a value
Read the object on the domain controller named in the error and check whether the attribute is present and populated. Distinguish among three states: the attribute is absent, it is present with an empty or unusable value, or it is present but the requesting account cannot read it. Each state leads to a different remedy.
Review the object’s recent history if available. A value may have been removed by a provisioning job, a deprovisioning rule, or a manual edit. Restore or populate it only when the value is known, valid for the schema and object class, and approved by the owner of that directory data. Do not invent a value simply because the application expects one.

5. Check permissions and visibility
A directory can return a “does not exist” style result when the account cannot see an attribute or object. Compare the failing operation with a controlled test using an authorized administrative account, while following your organization’s privacy and least-privilege rules. If the authorized test succeeds, review delegated permissions, inheritance, service-account changes, and any attribute-level protection.
Do not solve a visibility issue by granting broad domain-wide rights. Identify the smallest read or write permission needed by the application and have the directory owner approve the change. Record the before-and-after permissions so they can be reverted.
6. Compare domain controllers
If the result differs between controllers, investigate replication before modifying the object. Read the object and attribute on the controller named in the error and on a second controller. Record which values each server returns and which naming context contains the object.
Recommended Free Tools
Use your organization’s approved replication and health checks. Review Directory Service and replication logs for failures, delays, or a condition affecting the relevant naming context. A single stale controller can make a valid attribute appear missing, while a wider replication failure can spread an incorrect or incomplete object state.
Best Value
Do not delete replication metadata, force an authoritative repair, or make competing edits while the affected controller and naming context are unknown. First identify the authoritative source and the underlying replication condition. After repair, allow normal convergence and verify the same object and attribute on more than one controller.
7. Apply the smallest correction
Choose the least invasive fix that matches the evidence:
- Obsolete or misspelled request: update the application query, LDAP filter, mapping, or script to use the valid LDAP display name.
- Valid attribute missing from one object: restore or populate the value according to the object’s class, syntax, and approved data source.
- Permission or visibility problem: correct the narrowly scoped delegation or service-account access.
- Replication inconsistency: repair replication and wait for convergence before retrying the original operation.
- Schema mismatch: align the application with the directory version, or follow a formal schema-extension process if the attribute is genuinely required.
After the change, repeat the original operation against the same controller and object. Then test through the normal application path, because a direct administrative read can succeed while the service account or application mapping still fails. Document the change, observed result, and any remaining controller differences.
If 0x0000200A appeared during Windows Update or setup
An update or upgrade screen can surface a directory-related status without proving that Active Directory is damaged. Treat the setup workflow and directory workflow as separate diagnostic tracks unless the complete message links them.
- Preserve the full setup message. Note whether the code appeared during checking, downloading, installation, rollback, or the first restart.
- Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter. Use the troubleshooter provided by Windows for the affected update workflow and follow its reported actions.
- Restart the computer. A restart can clear a pending installation state before you check for updates again.
- Check for updates again. Record whether the same code returns and at which stage.
- For an installation or upgrade, remove nonessential hardware. Leave only the devices required to complete setup, then reconnect them after the installation succeeds.
- Check permissions. Confirm that the account running setup has the rights required by the installation workflow and that the device is not blocked by an organizational policy.
- Temporarily disable antivirus during installation only when your organization permits it. Re-enable protection immediately after the installation attempt. This step addresses setup interference; it does not repair an Active Directory schema or object.
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A computer can continue to run after that date, but it is outside Microsoft’s supported Windows 10 servicing period. That support status does not explain which directory attribute is missing, so continue to use the captured setup message and the directory workflow separately.
What not to do
- Do not edit the registry based only on this hexadecimal code. The code identifies a directory attribute/value condition, not a registry setting.
- Do not download a random “0x0000200A fixer.” Unverified utilities can change system or directory state without showing which object was edited.
- Do not delete and recreate Active Directory objects to make an error disappear. Recreation can change security identifiers, memberships, links, and optional attributes.
- Do not force schema or replication repairs before identifying the affected naming context and authoritative controller.
- Do not populate an attribute with a guessed value. A syntactically valid value can still be semantically wrong for the application or object.
- Do not remove antivirus permanently. If it is paused for setup, restore it as soon as the installation attempt is complete.
Before a high-impact directory edit, take the system-state or directory backup required by your organization and follow its change-control procedure. If the issue affects many objects, multiple controllers, authentication, or production provisioning, escalate to the directory-services team with the incident record rather than continuing trial-and-error edits.
How to tell the likely cause from the pattern
| Observed pattern | Most useful next check | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| One application fails for one object | Generated request, attribute spelling, object class, and value presence | That the entire directory schema is damaged |
| Many objects fail through the same application | Shared mapping, permissions, schema compatibility, and service-account changes | That every object is missing the same value |
| Only one domain controller returns the error | Replication status, naming context, and controller logs | That deleting the object will repair replication |
| All controllers return the error for one object | Object class, attribute definition, value history, and application expectations | That a different controller will supply a missing value |
| The code appears only in Windows setup | Update troubleshooter, restart, update stage, hardware, permissions, and setup logs | That the setup code proves an Active Directory fault |
Optional shortcut
Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, settings that add CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary and cache cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash or directory-service configuration.
When the error is resolved
Consider the incident closed only after the original operation succeeds through its normal application or setup path, the same object and attribute can be read from the relevant controllers, and no new replication or Directory Service errors appear. Keep the captured message, root cause, change record, and verification results with the application or directory documentation. That record prevents a future provisioning or update incident from being misdiagnosed from the hexadecimal code alone.
